Campgrounds and RV parks near Sullivan's Island, SC

The beach is the main draw. Public access paths cross the dune system from Middle Street, and swimming, surfing, shelling, and long low-tide walks toward Breach Inlet are the typical activities. The historic Sullivan's Island Lighthouse and the Fort Moultrie unit of Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park sit on the south end of the island. Day trips from a nearby campground are easy. Historic downtown Charleston, the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point, Isle of Palms County Park, Boone Hall Plantation, and the Charleston Tea Garden on Wadmalaw Island are all within reach. Fishing charters and kayak launches operate out of Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Charleston area. From late March through May, daytime highs settle into the seventies and low eighties, humidity is moderate, and ocean water warms enough for swimming by mid-May. October and early November bring similar conditions with fewer crowds and lower campground demand. Summer is peak beach season and peak booking season. June through August is hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms rolling in off the Atlantic. Campgrounds in Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, and Ladson routinely fill on weekends, and holiday weeks should be booked well in advance. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, with peak activity from mid-August through October. Travelers should track NOAA National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm campground evacuation policies before arrival. Winters are mild but breezy, with daytime highs commonly in the upper fifties and low sixties, and most private campgrounds stay open year-round.

Expect a base-and-commute pattern. The RV stays hooked up at a mainland campground with full utilities, and the beach is reached by day trip. Most nearby parks offer paved or gravel back-in and pull-through sites, laundry, and pools, and several sit on wooded lots with mixed sun and shade. Road access to the island is straightforward but tight. The Ben Sawyer Bridge is a swing bridge that opens on schedule for boat traffic, which can add short delays. Streets on Sullivan's Island itself are narrow and residential, and taking a large motorhome or fifth wheel across is not recommended. Bring bug spray for salt-marsh mosquitoes and no-see-ums, especially at dusk from late spring through early fall. Beach parking enforcement is active, and tides swing several feet, so check a tide chart before planning long shoreline walks.
