Camping near Kingston Springs, Tennessee
Kingston Springs sits along the Harpeth River in Cheatham County, roughly a 30-minute drive west of downtown Nashville on Interstate 40. The town works well as a base for RV travelers who want quick access to Music City while camping in a quieter, more rural setting, and it puts several state parks, riverfront resorts, and interstate-side stopovers within a short drive.
The closest full-service state park is Montgomery Bell State Park, located in Middle Tennessee about 40 minutes west of downtown Nashville, with forested landscapes and three lakes that support a wide range of outdoor activities throughout the year. West of town, Piney River Resort sits on the banks of the Piney River, with riverfront sites, premium and standard RV sites, tiny home rentals, full hookups, and WiFi.
Other options in the area include Piney River RV Resort, Tanbark Campground off I-40 near Dickson, and Trinity RV Park and Campground closer to the Nashville side for travelers who want to be near the city.
Things to do around Kingston Springs
The Harpeth River runs through Kingston Springs and supports paddling, tubing, and fishing, with public access points nearby. Downtown Nashville is a short drive east for live music, the Grand Ole Opry, and family attractions, while the surrounding Cheatham County countryside offers back-road driving and small-town stops.
Hiking and biking are the main draws at nearby state parks. Montgomery Bell has 19 miles of trails winding through roughly 3,850 acres of forest and past rocky rivers, including a 10-mile overnight route, around 23 miles of dirt mountain bike trails, and three lakes for swimming, boating, and paddling, plus a golf course.
RV travelers staying along the Piney River can swim, fish, and paddle directly from the campground, and the Natchez Trace Parkway is within reach for a scenic day trip south.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Middle Tennessee. Daytime highs are comfortable, humidity is lower than in midsummer, and the hardwood forests around Montgomery Bell and the Piney River show either wildflowers or fall color. Weekends fill first, so reserve early if a trip lines up with a Nashville event or a holiday.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms, with highs frequently in the upper 80s and low 90s. Campgrounds with river access, shade, or a pool become the practical choice in July and August, and families should plan outdoor activity for the morning. Severe storms and tornado watches are possible in spring and early summer.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Montgomery Bell's campground normally provides 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electric service, with many sites including water and onsite sewer, though the campground at Montgomery Bell State Park is currently closed for renovation, so confirm status before booking a cold-season stay.

Michael’s RV was excellent. His communication was prompt and clear. The RV is in good shape, drove easily, and was very clean. The snacks and coffee were appreciated and the airport pickup and drop off was incredibly smooth. I’d definitely rent from Michael again on my next trip to Seattle.

How to book campgrounds near Kingston Springs
Reservation systems differ by operator. For Montgomery Bell State Park and other Tennessee State Parks, book through the state parks reservation portal or by phone. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance for standard campsites, and the group camping area at Montgomery Bell can be booked up to five years in advance.
Private parks such as Piney River Resort, Piney River RV Resort, Trinity RV Park and Campground, and Tanbark Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and many are also listed on third-party booking platforms. Summer weekends and any dates overlapping a major Nashville event should be locked in well in advance.
Cancellations or changes to Tennessee State Parks reservations can be made online or by calling Central Reservations at 1-888-867-2757, so check each operator's cancellation policy before finalizing plans.
What to expect on the ground
Expect wooded, hilly terrain with narrow rural roads leading to some campgrounds. Turn-by-turn directions to Piney River Resort are not always accurate, so drivers should check the resort's website or call ahead. Big rigs are generally accommodated at the private resorts, but confirm site length before arrival.
Hookup levels vary. State park sites at Montgomery Bell offer water and electric with some sewer, while Piney River Resort advertises full hookups and Tanbark provides an interstate-adjacent stopover with the basics. Cell coverage is generally good near I-40 and weakens in the hollows.
Campers should be cautious of wildlife in the area, including snakes, ticks, and raccoons, keep food stored securely, and wear appropriate footwear on uneven terrain. Ticks are common in warmer months, so pets and kids should be checked after time in tall grass.
