Campgrounds and RV parks near Petersburg, TN

The Duck River is the region's outdoor centerpiece, popular for kayaking and tubing and recognized for its biologically diverse ecosystem. Henry Horton State Park offers disc golf, trap and skeet shooting, and an 18-hole golf course, plus hiking along the river and through cedar glades. Yanahli WMA covers roughly 12,800 acres east of Columbia with cedar glades, hardwood forests, wetlands, bluff-lined riverfront, caves, and sinkholes, drawing hikers, birders, anglers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers along the Duck River. Day trips are easy in every direction. The Tennessee Whiskey Trail runs nearby, with distilleries including Jack Daniel's in Lynchburg and George Dickel in Tullahoma, while the historic town of Bell Buckle offers antiques, seasonal craft fairs, and dining. Nashville and Huntsville are both reachable for a day.

Middle Tennessee has four distinct seasons in a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and muggy, winters are cool with occasional cold snaps and light snow, and precipitation is spread across the year with February typically the wettest month and September the driest. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity than mid-summer. Spring brings the busiest paddling on the Duck River and the strongest severe-weather risk. Tornado activity across Tennessee tends to peak in the spring months, so travelers should have a weather radio or phone alerts on hand. Summer is peak family camping season, with hot, muggy afternoons, frequent thunderstorms, and full use of pools and lake access. Fall delivers the most reliable weather: warm days, crisp nights, and hardwood color from mid-October into early November. Winter camping is possible at year-round parks such as Stoney Creek Travel Park and Henry Horton, though some seasonal amenities close and one of Henry Horton's two bathhouses stays open through winter. The Henry Horton State Park swimming pool is no longer in operation, so plan swimming elsewhere.

Sites near Petersburg skew practical rather than resort-glossy. Stoney Creek Travel Park has 42 pull-through sites 60 to 100 feet long with full-hookup 20/30/50 amp service, making it an easy overnight for large rigs off I-65. Henry Horton's Campground South sites are paved and include 20-, 30-, or 50-amp electric and water hookups, a grill, picnic table, lantern hook, Wi-Fi, and a nearby bathhouse. Clearwater Cove RV Resort provides full hookup RV sites on Tims Ford Lake with lake access. Cell coverage is generally good across the region on major carriers, though it thins inside Yanahli WMA and along wooded river bottoms. Expect bugs in summer, ticks in tall grass, and afternoon thunderstorms from June through August. Firewood should be bought locally, and Tennessee State Parks require certified heat-treated firewood to protect against invasive forest pests.
