Campgrounds near Bardwell, Texas
Bardwell sits in southwestern Ellis County, roughly 45 miles southeast of Dallas, and centers on Bardwell Lake, a reservoir on Waxahachie Creek. The lake is located in the Blackland Prairie region of southwestern Ellis County, built in 1965 for flood control by the US Army Corps of Engineers, and sits two miles southwest of Ennis off State Highway 34. The town itself is small, so most trip planning revolves around the lake, the nearby city of Ennis, and Corsicana just to the south.
RV travelers have a mix of options. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates campgrounds at Bardwell Lake, running three camping areas at the lake. Established sites include Mott Park, Highview Park, and Waxahachie Creek Park, all situated along the shores of the reservoir. Private parks fill in the gaps, including Ennis Luxury RV Resort, Rockett RV Ranch, Northside RV Resort, and The Range Vintage Trailer Resort. Corsicana Texas Eclipse Park adds another option a short drive south.
The area works well as a quiet lake base for families and as a stopover between Dallas-Fort Worth and points south, with easy access to I-45 and US-287.
Things to do near Bardwell
Bardwell Lake is the main draw. Camping, fishing, and picnicking are just a few of the recreational opportunities offered at Bardwell Lake. Many local fishermen consider the lake one of the best kept secrets in the state, bass fishermen seldom leave empty-handed, crappie fishing is moderate, and catfish are usually excellent, and the lake has a marina with fishing piers plus several designated hunting areas including duck hunting.
Off the water, Ennis is known for its annual bluebonnet driving trail each spring and the Texas Motorplex drag-racing venue. Corsicana adds the Collin Street Bakery and Pearce Museum, and Waxahachie, about 15 minutes north, features a historic courthouse square and the Scarborough Renaissance Festival on spring weekends.
Hiking is limited but present at some private parks, and the lakeshore provides open grassy areas for walking and wildflower viewing in season.

57° / 39°F 75 mmMild, quiet season; most private parks stay open
Spring and fall are the strongest windows. March through May brings mild temperatures, the Ennis bluebonnet bloom, and the wettest stretch of the year in North Texas. Severe thunderstorms and occasional tornado watches are part of the pattern, so travelers should monitor NWS Fort Worth alerts and choose sites with awning tie-downs.
Summer is hot and busy at the lake. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F, while winters remain relatively mild. Weekends and holidays around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill first, especially at Corps of Engineers waterfront sites. Book several weeks out for those dates.
Winter is the quiet season. Freezes happen but rarely last long, and most private RV parks stay open year-round. Most Bardwell Lake campgrounds are open year-round, though Mott Park operates seasonally from April through September. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and easier reservations, making it a comfortable stretch for lakeside stays before the winter slowdown.

Our experience with Yeehaw rentals and the owner Darren was great. There was a lot of good communication. We understood what needed to be done. He delivered as requested in a timely manner and we were able to meet with him. Do a walk-through of the Trailer and ensure that everything was in good working order. Him and his partner showed us all the different working aspects of the inside of the trailer and the outside I would definitely rent with them again

How to book a campsite
Corps of Engineers sites at Bardwell Lake are reserved through Recreation.gov. The booking window opens six months in advance, and popular waterfront sites for spring and summer weekends go quickly. All U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds are a maximum use of 14 days within a consecutive 30-day period per water resource project, which includes all of Bardwell Lake's parks.
Private parks such as Ennis Luxury RV Resort, Rockett RV Ranch, Northside RV Resort, and The Range Vintage Trailer Resort accept direct bookings through their own websites or by phone. Monthly stays are common at these properties, so short trips on holiday weekends need earlier planning.
For lake activity questions, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Bardwell Lake Office is located at 4000 Observation Dr., Ennis, Texas, reachable at (972) 875-5711.
What to expect on site
Corps parks at Bardwell Lake are typical of Fort Worth District facilities: paved pads, picnic tables, grills, and clean restrooms with showers, with a mix of full-hookup, electric-and-water, and primitive sites. Shade varies by loop, and multiple sites offer lake views, though some have slanted parking areas that may require leveling blocks.
Rules are standard. A permit is required for events or activities occurring in the park, including but not limited to bounce houses, water slides, weddings, tournaments, bands, DJs, and church functions. Swimming pools of any size are not allowed. Nothing may be tied, attached, nailed, etc., to any tree or other vegetative growth. 50 amp services are available only for 50 amp campers, 30 amp services are available only for 30 amp campers, and converters or dog bones are not allowed.
Private resorts in the area lean toward longer pull-throughs, full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi, with pools or clubhouses at the larger properties.

Yes, RV delivery in Bardwell is one of the best perks on RVezy, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow a travel trailer or fifth wheel directly to your reserved site at Mott Park, Highview Park, or Waxahachie Creek Park, level it, hook up water and 50-amp power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing, no backing into a tight Corps of Engineers site, and no learning curve. Filter listings by Delivery, message the host with your campsite number, and you'll arrive to a fully set-up camper ready for s'mores at the lake.

The mileage policy is clearly displayed on every listing.

You're spoiled for choice for RV camping in Bardwell. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) operates three lakeside campgrounds right on the 3,500-acre Bardwell Lake: Mott Park (spacious sites, gorgeous lake views, open seasonally), Highview Park (best for big rigs with 50-amp service), and Waxahachie Creek Park (shadier, more vegetation, great for tent-and-RV combos). All are reservable through Recreation.gov. For full hookups, try Buffalo Creek RV Resort in nearby Ennis or Texan RV Ranch in Mansfield. swf-wc.usace.army.mil/bardwell/Recreation/Camping/Devareas.shtmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Bardwell?
The sweet spot for a Bardwell RV trip is mid-March through late May and again from mid-September through early November. Spring brings the famous Ennis Bluebonnet Trails (Ennis is the Official Bluebonnet City of Texas) and daytime highs in the 70s, while fall delivers crisp 60-to-80 degree days and uncrowded campgrounds. Summer is gorgeous on Lake Bardwell but expect highs in the mid-90s with humidity, so plan early-morning hikes and afternoon swims. Winters are mild (40s-to-60s) and most Corps parks stay open year-round, making December and January a quiet, budget-friendly time to camp. Book April weekends early; bluebonnet season fills fast.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay around Bardwell?
You've got this. Bardwell sits on quiet two-lane FM roads with light traffic, making it one of the friendliest places in North Texas for a first time renting an RV. Your RVezy host gives you a full pre-departure walkthrough covering propane, water, slide-outs, leveling, and the dump procedure before you ever turn the key. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, book a host who offers delivery to Mott or Highview Park and they'll set everything up for you. Pro tip: practice a few right turns in the big H-E-B parking lot in Ennis before heading to your campsite, and you'll feel like a pro by sunset.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws.htmlWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flats, dead batteries, lockouts, jump starts, and towing throughout Ellis County and beyond. Your host is just a message away through the RVezy app for quick questions like how to reset the inverter, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. For campground-specific issues at Bardwell Lake, the USACE Lake Office can help with things like a flooded site. Save those numbers in your phone before you leave the driveway, and you'll camp with total confidence.

Head 75 miles south on I-35E to Waco for the Magnolia Market and Cameron Park, or push 200 miles south to Austin and the Hill Country wineries. Drive 160 miles east on I-20 to Caddo Lake State Park for cypress-tree paddling, or 110 miles southwest to Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose for actual sauropod tracks in the riverbed. Cross-border trips into Oklahoma (Lake Texoma is just 100 miles north) are allowed with most hosts; Mexico travel is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Always confirm interstate plans with your host before booking.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/dinosaur-valleyWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what does gas cost around Bardwell?
Budget realistically and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Class C motorhomes around Bardwell average 8-10 MPG, Class B campervans get 16-20 MPG, and most travel trailers don't burn extra fuel (you're towing with your own SUV or truck, which usually drops 2-4 MPG while hitched). Gas prices in Ellis County typically run a bit below the national average, with Buc-ee's in Terrell (35 miles northeast) and the Love's at the I-45/US-287 interchange offering the best diesel rates. Pro tip: fill up in Ennis before heading to Lake Bardwell because there are no fuel stations inside the Corps parks themselves.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Bardwell Lake?
For the best sites at Lake Bardwell, book 4 to 6 months ahead through Recreation.gov, the official reservation system for all three U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds (Mott, Highview, and Waxahachie Creek). Summer weekends, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day fill up the day reservations open (typically 6 months in advance to the day). Weekday and shoulder-season sites are usually grabable just 2-3 weeks out. The maximum stay is 14 days in any 30-day period. Pro tip: log into Recreation.gov at 9:00 AM Central exactly six months before your target date for the best shot at lakefront sites.
recreation.gov/gateways/492What are the driving conditions like around Bardwell, TX?
Driving an RV around Bardwell is genuinely easy. The area is flat Blackland Prairie with wide farm-to-market roads and minimal mountain grades, and you'll mostly use US-287, TX-34, and FM 985 to reach the lake parks. Watch for sudden Texas thunderstorms in spring (May is the peak severe-weather month) and occasional high winds that can push tall Class A rigs around on US-287. Avoid driving through downtown Dallas at rush hour: stick to the I-45 to US-287 loop instead. Pro tip: Texas allows RVs in the right two lanes of most highways, so cruise at 65 mph and let the I-35 traffic pass you by.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws.htmlWhat amenities will I find at Bardwell Lake campgrounds?
Bardwell's Corps of Engineers campgrounds are well equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Highview Park offers 50-amp electric and water hookups at most sites, Waxahachie Creek Park has electric and water sites with shaded vegetation, and Mott Park provides electric sites with stunning lake frontage. Each park has a dump station, potable water fill, hot showers, flush restrooms, picnic tables, fire rings, and boat ramps. The $5 day-use fee covers boat ramps, showers, and the dump station if you're not camping. Pro tip: there are no full sewer hookups, so dump on your way out at the park dump station, which is included in your camping fee.
swf-wc.usace.army.mil/bardwell/Recreation/Fees.shtmlWhat's included inside a typical Bardwell RV rental?
Most motorhome rentals in Bardwell come fully equipped for lake life. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa sleepers (Class C motorhomes typically sleep 6-8), a full kitchen with fridge, microwave, propane stove, and sink, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Air conditioning is standard (essential for Texas summers), and many hosts add a generator, outdoor speakers, smart TV, and Wi-Fi hotspot. Seatbelts are provided for every traveling passenger. Many Lake Bardwell hosts include camp chairs, a Blackstone griddle, and a starter kit of dishes and linens. Check the listing's amenities tab so you only pack what you actually need.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Bardwell rental?
Bardwell hosts on RVezy offer a great menu of add-ons to customize your trip. Popular extras include generator packages ($25-50/day), bedding and kitchen kits ($50-100 flat), portable propane fire pits (perfect since Texas burn bans hit Ellis County often), bike racks, kayak rentals, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Ennis, Waxahachie, or Bardwell, but delivery to Lake Bardwell's Corps parks is widely available for a flat fee based on mileage. Confirm your pickup window and dropoff time in the host's chat. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you're booking Mott Park, where some sites have limited shade.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/burn-bansHow does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Bardwell, TX, you pay through RVezy's encrypted checkout (never directly to the host) using a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit, separate from the booking payment, is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after a clean return with no damage. To keep things smooth, take time-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's dump and fuel-return instructions, and report any concerns through the RVezy app right away. Documenting everything keeps your deposit return fast and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle hot Texas summers in an RV at Lake Bardwell?
Summer at Lake Bardwell is fantastic if you plan for the heat. July and August highs regularly hit the mid-90s with high humidity, so book a site with a 50-amp hookup (Highview Park is your best bet) to run two AC units without tripping breakers. Drive in the cool early morning, pre-cool the RV an hour before bed, and park with the awning facing west to shade the slide-out. Hydrate hard, swim daily at the lake, and watch for burn bans before lighting a campfire. Pro tip: shoulder seasons (April-May and October) deliver the same lake fun with 75-degree days and lower nightly rates.
