Camping near Barton Creek
Barton Creek sits on the southwest edge of Austin, Texas, in the Hill Country limestone belt that feeds Barton Springs and the Colorado River chain. RV travelers use the area as a base for exploring Austin's greenbelts, the Highland Lakes, and Texas wine country, with most private RV parks concentrated along the FM 620 and RM 2222 corridors between the city and Lake Travis.
Options close to Barton Creek range from full-hookup resorts to lakeside primitive camping. Awkward Turtle RV Austin and Austin Lone Star RV Resort serve travelers who want paved sites and city access, while Lake Travis Inn and RV Park and Hudson Bend RV Park Inc put campers within reach of the Hudson Bend marinas. Windy Point Park on Lake Travis is a waterfront option popular with scuba divers and families.
Most sites are open year-round, but summer and major event weekends fill early, and lake-level fluctuations on Lake Travis can affect shoreline access at some parks.
Things to do around Barton Creek
The Barton Creek Greenbelt offers roughly seven miles of hiking and swimming holes when water levels allow, and Barton Springs Pool in Zilker Park stays around 68 to 70 degrees year-round. McKinney Falls State Park, about half an hour southeast, has waterfalls, a paved bike loop, and RV-accessible sites.
Lake Travis stretches roughly 64 miles with over 271 miles of shoreline and covers nearly 19,000 acres, giving RV travelers wide options for boating, swimming, and scuba diving. Windy Point Park on Lake Travis caters heavily to scuba divers, with multiple shoreline entries, platforms, and air fills on site.
Families also use Barton Creek as a base for day trips to Dripping Springs distilleries, Hamilton Pool Preserve, and downtown Austin food and music venues.

Central Texas has a long shoulder season, which makes Barton Creek workable for RV travel most of the year. Spring, from March through May, is peak wildflower and lake season, with bluebonnets in April and comfortable daytime temperatures. It is also a wet stretch, and Hill Country flash flooding is a real risk after heavy storms.
Summer runs hot. Most summer days in Austin heat up to at least 90 degrees, and temperatures reach 100 degrees or more on an average of 29 days a year. Shade, hookups with reliable 50-amp service, and lake access become priorities. Weekend RV sites near Lake Travis often book several weeks ahead from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Fall brings cooler nights and lower humidity, and it is typically the wettest season for Hill Country storms. Winter is mild by North American standards, with occasional freezes; Austin normally sees just one day each winter when the temperature does not rise above freezing.

RV was great! We had a wonderful time renting it for a weekend at COTA. Jesse was very responsive and helpful anytime we needed it.

Jesse is great! This is my second time renting a camper from him and he has been very easy to work with. We were camping locally and he even stopped by to check on us the day after our departure and brought us an outdoor rug just in case we got some rain! I highly recommend him and we will certainly be using him again in the future!

Booking and reservations
Private RV parks around Barton Creek, including Awkward Turtle RV Austin, Lake Travis Inn and RV Park, Austin Lone Star RV Resort, and Hudson Bend RV Park Inc, take reservations directly through their own websites or through third-party booking platforms. Full-hookup sites near Lake Travis fill first on summer weekends and around SXSW, ACL Festival, and Formula 1 race weekends.
Texas state parks such as McKinney Falls use the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, which opens most sites up to five months in advance and often sells out for holiday weekends within minutes of the window opening.
Windy Point Park on Lake Travis accepts advance camping reservations through its own website, and walk-ins can usually be accommodated as well, though advance booking is encouraged to lock in the best location.
What to expect on-site
Expect a mix of paved resort-style parks and rustic lakefront properties. Resort parks in the Austin metro typically offer 30 and 50-amp service, water, sewer, laundry, and Wi-Fi, with pull-through and back-in sites on gravel or concrete pads. Cell coverage is generally strong close to the city and spottier in the western Hill Country.
Lakeside sites can be primitive. Windy Point Park on Lake Travis offers dry camping only, with no water or electric hookups at sites, and provides carts to move gear from parking down to the shoreline. Shade varies, so awnings and portable shade are worth packing in warmer months.
Hill Country roads are winding with some steep grades near Lake Travis. Drivers of larger rigs should scout entrances on satellite view before arrival, and watch for low-water crossings during and after storms.
