Campgrounds and RV parks near Bovina, TX

The area is high plains ranch country, so activities lean toward wide-open outdoor recreation, small-town Americana, and short road trips. Oasis State Park is the main nearby draw, with a small stocked fishing lake, shifting sand dunes, hiking and mountain-bike trails, sand sledding, and strong stargazing thanks to dark rural skies. More than eighty bird species use the park through the year, and winter is especially productive for birders. Further afield, Ute Lake State Park and Santa Rosa Lake in New Mexico offer boating, water skiing, and lake fishing. To the northeast, Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the Texas Panhandle is a longer day trip and adds serious canyon hiking, biking, and horseback riding to the itinerary.

Bovina has a cold semi-arid climate. Summers are hot with strong sun, winters are short but genuinely cold and windy, and precipitation is low all year. Most rain arrives as afternoon thunderstorms between June and September, with August typically the wettest month. Snowfall is possible from roughly October through April, heaviest in January and February. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. Daytime highs sit in a mild range in March through May and again in September and October, though spring afternoons can bring high winds and blowing dust across the plains. Wildflowers and migrating birds show up in shoulder season. Summer is the busiest camping window at nearby state parks, with warm nights, long daylight hours, and the region's short thunderstorm season. Winter RV travel is workable because most private parks near Bovina and Clovis stay open year-round, but overnight lows regularly drop below freezing and travelers should plan for freeze protection on tanks and hoses.

Bovina is a working farm-and-ranch town of roughly 1,700 people, best known locally for grain elevators and its XIT Ranch history. Amenities in town are limited to basic groceries, fuel, and a handful of restaurants, so most RV renters plan to resupply in Clovis, which has full-size supermarkets, big-box stores, laundromats, and propane. Roads in the area are flat, straight, and easy for big rigs. U.S. 60 is the main east-west route, connecting Bovina to Clovis and Portales in New Mexico and to Hereford and the Amarillo metro to the northeast. Cell coverage is generally solid along the highway corridor and in town but can thin out on ranch roads. Expect wind. The Llano Estacado is one of the windiest regions in the country, and steady breezes are the norm year-round. Awnings should be stowed when leaving the site, and slide-toppers benefit from wind straps during gusty stretches in spring.
