Campgrounds near Buffalo, Texas
Buffalo sits in Leon County along Interstate 45, roughly halfway between Dallas and Houston. The town functions as a practical fuel and supply stop for RV travelers moving between the two metros, with several private RV parks in and around the community and larger lake and state park campgrounds within an hour's drive.
Closest to town, Horseshoe RV Park and Hook & Ladder RV Park offer full-hookup sites geared toward overnight and short-stay RV traffic on I-45. Shady Oaks Cabins and RV Park adds cabin options for travelers without a rig, and Holland Ranch Cars and Parts operates a small camping area alongside its property. For lakefront camping, Lake Limestone Campground & Marina lies about 30 miles west near Jewett, with RV sites, cabins, tent sites, a boat ramp, and a general store on the water.
Bigger public options in the region include Fort Parker State Park near Mexia, reached via Highway 164 west from Buffalo, which offers water and electric campsites, screened shelters, and lake access on Fort Parker Lake.
Things to do around Buffalo
Fishing drives most trip planning in this part of Central Texas. Lake Limestone is a well-known crappie and bass lake, and Lake Limestone Campground & Marina provides direct water access and a boat launch. Fort Parker Lake, about an hour west, holds channel and blue catfish, white and black bass, and crappie, with two boat ramps and a fish cleaning station in the state park.
Paddlers can take the 5.3-mile Limestone Bluffs Paddling Trail on Fort Parker Lake and the Navasota River. Fort Parker State Park also has the two-mile Springfield Trail, which passes near Lake Springfield and a dam built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
In Buffalo itself, expect small-town amenities: grocery stops, fuel, and diners along US 79 and I-45. Confederate Reunion Grounds State Historic Site sits five miles northwest of Fort Parker State Park for a short history detour.

Spring runs mild and wet. March through May bring frequent rainfall in the surrounding area, with April and May often the wettest months. Wildflowers peak in April, and lake levels typically sit near full. Thunderstorms are common, and travelers should watch for severe weather warnings when camping near open water.
Summer is hot and humid. July and August highs regularly reach the mid-90s Fahrenheit, and campgrounds with shade, water access, or pool amenities book up on weekends. Fort Parker State Park recommends reservations for both camping and day use during peak periods because it can reach capacity.
Fall cools off through October and November and is a strong shoulder season for RV travel: lower humidity, moderate rainfall, and easier weekend availability. Winter is short and generally mild, with occasional freezes. Most private RV parks in the Buffalo area stay open year-round, though some lake amenities and screened shelters run seasonally.
How to book near Buffalo
Texas state park sites, including Fort Parker State Park, are booked through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system online or by phone through the customer service center. Overnight camping and lodging reservations can generally be made up to five months in advance, with the booking window opening at 8 a.m. Central Time. Reservations are strongly recommended on weekends and holidays because the park can reach capacity.
Privately run parks near Buffalo, such as Horseshoe RV Park, Hook & Ladder RV Park, Shady Oaks Cabins and RV Park, and Holland Ranch Cars and Parts, are booked directly by phone or through the operator's website. Lake Limestone Campground & Marina takes reservations directly and offers cabins, RV sites, and tent sites.
What to expect near Buffalo
Buffalo-area RV parks are utility-focused rather than resort-style. Expect gravel or grass pads, full hookups at most private parks, laundry and shower facilities at the larger operations, and quick access to I-45 and US 79. Cell coverage is generally solid in town but can drop off at lakeside sites.
At Fort Parker State Park, water spigots are shared in the camping area rather than at each site, and cabins have air-conditioning but no beds or bathrooms. A daily entrance fee applies per person 13 and older in addition to camping fees, and pets are not allowed in the screened shelter or cabin areas.
Bring insect repellent through the warm months, expect mosquitoes near the water, and plan for shade or A/C use during summer heat.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Buffalo, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Buffalo, TX?
RV rental in Buffalo, TX is one of the most affordable ways to explore East Texas. On RVezy, travel trailers in the Buffalo area typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A rigs sit in the $225 to $375 range. Because Buffalo sits at the I-45, US-79, and US-84 crossroads halfway between Dallas and Houston, you will find competitive pricing from hosts who serve both metros. For a cheap RV rental Buffalo TX option, book midweek, travel in the shoulder months (March or October), and filter by travel trailers, which usually come in under motorhomes. Many Buffalo hosts include generators or solar at no extra charge, which can save you $20 to $40 a night.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Buffalo%2C%20TexasWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Buffalo, TX?
Great news for first-time renters: a standard Class C Texas driver's license (the everyday one in your wallet) is all you need to rent an RV in Buffalo, TX. Texas does not require a special RV license or Commercial Driver's License for any motorhome or travel trailer you will find on RVezy. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and ID verification happens right inside the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit from your home country's auto club along with your home license. Verification is usually completed the same day you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Buffalo, TX protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, peace of mind is built into every RVezy booking in Buffalo. Each reservation includes a renter protection plan that covers most damage to the vehicle, plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on US-79 or a dead battery at a rest stop is handled with one phone call. During checkout you choose from different protection plan tiers depending on how much coverage you want, and hosts do not decide which level you pick. The protection plan provides substantial financial protection so you can focus on enjoying your Buffalo RV trip instead of worrying about the what-ifs. Pro tip: pick your protection tier based on the value of the rig and the type of trip you are taking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Buffalo, TX RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy that applies to every rental in Buffalo, TX, including a grace-period window after booking where you can cancel and receive a full refund. Because Buffalo occasionally sees severe spring thunderstorms or tropical rainfall from the Gulf, RVezy also has provisions for natural-disaster situations, so you are not stuck if Mother Nature changes your plans. Hosts do not set or negotiate cancellation terms, which keeps the experience consistent no matter which Buffalo listing you choose. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds guests or provides travel credits. Full details live on the RVezy Help Center.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Buffalo, TX?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Buffalo TX options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search, and you'll see listings from hosts who happily welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Buffalo is a fantastic launchpad for dog-loving travelers, with Fort Parker State Park (about 40 minutes west) offering leashed-pet trails and lakeside campsites, and the nearby Davy Crockett National Forest allowing pets on most trails. Message the host before booking to confirm any size limits or extra cleaning fees so there are no surprises. Pro tip: bring a portable outdoor mat and a tie-out stake. Most Leon County campgrounds require pets on a 6-foot leash, and a mat keeps muddy paws out of the RV.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/fort-parkerCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Buffalo, TX?
Yes, RV delivery Buffalo TX is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig down I-45. Many Buffalo-area hosts will deliver the RV directly to your campsite at places like Fort Parker State Park, Lake Limestone, or a private ranch, then level it, connect the hookups, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile round-trip, and some hosts offer free delivery within a set radius of Buffalo. Just use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer it. Pro tip: book delivery to a state park with full hookups and you can essentially turn your rental into a fully-set-up vacation home before you arrive.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/How many miles do I get and how far can I travel from Buffalo, TX?
You have plenty of room to roam. Buffalo, TX hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, but most include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and many hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. From Buffalo you are well positioned: Dallas is about 115 miles north on I-45, Houston is roughly 140 miles south, Austin is about 175 miles southwest, and Lake Livingston State Park is about 95 miles southeast. A weekend loop from Buffalo rarely burns through a standard mileage allowance. Pro tip: if you are planning a Big Bend or Gulf Coast run, filter for unlimited mileage hosts up front so you can drive freely without watching the odometer.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Buffalo%2C%20TexasWhere are the best campgrounds near Buffalo, TX?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Buffalo, TX include Fort Parker State Park (about 40 minutes west near Mexia, with lakeside sites and full hookups), Confederate Reunion Grounds nearby for a quieter state historic-site stay, Lake Limestone's Sportsman's Retreat (private full-hookup sites about 35 minutes northwest), and Mission Tejas State Park (an hour southeast, with shaded pull-throughs in the piney woods). For a quick overnight off I-45, Buffalo also has private RV parks right in town with 30/50-amp service. Pro tip: Texas state parks book up to 5 months in advance through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, so reserve early for spring break and fall foliage weekends.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/fort-parkerWhen is the best time to visit Buffalo, TX in an RV?
The sweet spot for RV camping Buffalo TX is mid-March through late May and again from late September through November. Spring brings wildflowers (Texas bluebonnets peak in April along the country roads around Leon County) and daytime highs in the 70s and low 80s. Fall offers cooler nights in the 50s, fewer mosquitoes, and prime fishing on Lake Limestone. Summers are hot and humid, with July and August highs regularly hitting 95 to 100°F, while winters are mild with most days in the 55 to 65°F range, perfect for snowbirds escaping the north. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season trip and you'll often save 15 to 25% on nightly rates compared to peak Texas summer.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay renting in Buffalo, TX?
Yes, first time renting an RV in Buffalo, TX is genuinely doable, and most guests tell us they felt confident within the first hour behind the wheel. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking through the dashboard, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump procedure. Buffalo is also one of the easiest launch points in Texas: I-45 is flat and straight, the local roads have wide shoulders, and there's very little big-city traffic to navigate before you reach the open highway. If you're nervous, choose a Class B campervan or a smaller 22 to 25-foot Class C. Pro tip: ask your host to record a quick video of the walkthrough on your phone so you can replay it at the campground.
txdmv.gov/motorists/recreational-vehiclesWhat happens if I break down during my Buffalo, TX RV trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking in Buffalo, TX includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on US-79, run out of fuel near Centerville, or have a battery issue at a campsite, one phone call dispatches help. RVezy's support team is also reachable any time before, during, and after your trip through the app. Buffalo's location at the intersection of I-45, US-79, and US-84 means service trucks can reach most breakdown spots quickly. Pro tip: note your exact mile marker when you call. It cuts dispatch time and gets you back on the road faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Buffalo, TX RV rental out of state or across the border?
Yes, road-tripping out of Texas is absolutely on the table. Most Buffalo, TX hosts allow interstate travel throughout the lower 48, so an RV road trip from Buffalo to New Orleans (about 430 miles east), Santa Fe (around 750 miles west), or the Gulf Coast is very doable. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan coverage, so message the host from the listing page to confirm before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the protection plan does not extend south of the border. Pro tip: for cross-border Canada trips, plan your route early and confirm coverage details with the host at least 30 days ahead.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat about fuel costs for an RV trip from Buffalo, TX?
Texas has some of the cheapest fuel in the country, which makes an RV road trip from Buffalo, TX easier on the wallet than most U.S. starting points. Expect about 8 to 10 mpg for a Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 12 to 18 mpg for a travel trailer being towed, and 18 to 22 mpg for a Class B campervan. Buffalo's Love's, Pilot, and Stripes truck stops right off I-45 (Exit 164) have RV-friendly pumps with high canopies and diesel lanes. For a 4-night, 500-mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $180 to $230 in fuel at current Texas prices. Pro tip: fuel up in Buffalo before heading west on US-84, as prices climb noticeably once you cross into the Hill Country.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Buffalo, TX?
For the best sites, book 3 to 5 months ahead, especially at Texas state parks. Texas Parks and Wildlife opens reservations up to 5 months in advance through their online reservation system, and prime spots at Fort Parker State Park and Mission Tejas State Park fill quickly for spring break (mid-March), Memorial Day, July 4th, and the October wildflower-and-foliage weekends. Private RV parks around Buffalo, like the ones near I-45 Exit 170, are usually easier and can often be grabbed a week or two out. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 5 months before your trip start date and book the moment the window opens at 8:00 a.m. Central. That's how locals snag the lakefront pull-throughs.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Buffalo, TX?
Driving around Buffalo is about as RV-friendly as it gets in Texas. I-45 between Dallas and Houston is flat, four lanes each way, and has frequent rest areas, while US-79 and US-84 are two-lane highways with wide shoulders and very light traffic. Watch for two things: sudden spring thunderstorms that can drop heavy rain and gusty crosswinds (pull off at the next exit if visibility drops), and the occasional deer at dawn/dusk on the country roads near Leon County. There are no mountain passes, no tight switchbacks, and no low clearances on the main routes. Pro tip: plan longer drives for mid-morning to early afternoon to dodge both deer and Houston-bound rush hour traffic on I-45 south.
drivetexas.org/What hookups and amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Buffalo, TX?
You'll find excellent infrastructure. Most campgrounds near Buffalo, TX offer 30 and 50-amp electric, potable water spigots at each site, and either full sewer hookups or convenient on-site dump stations. Fort Parker State Park has water and electric sites plus a central dump station, Lake Limestone private parks generally provide full hookups, and Buffalo's in-town RV parks have full hookups year-round. For dumping en route, the Love's Travel Stop at I-45 Exit 164 in Buffalo has a public RV dump and fresh-water fill, which is a lifesaver for one-way travelers. Pro tip: arrive with a 25-foot drinking-water hose, a 4-in-1 sewer adapter, and a 30-to-50 amp dogbone. These three items handle 95% of hookup situations across Leon County campgrounds.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/fort-parker/fees-facilitiesWhat's typically included inside a Buffalo, TX RV rental?

Many hosts include a generator or solar setup, outdoor camp chairs, a propane grill, and starter kits with linens, kitchenware, and toilet paper. Wi-Fi hotspots are a popular add-on. Travel trailers and campervan rental Buffalo TX options offer similar amenities scaled to size. Pro tip: read the listing's amenities section carefully and message the host to confirm anything that matters most, like a specific bed configuration for a family RV trip Buffalo TX.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Buffalo%2C%20TexasWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with Buffalo, TX RV rentals?

Drop-off is normally at the same location, though many hosts offer delivery and pickup to nearby campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies are set by the host and shown on every listing. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus generator plus kitchen kit if it is your first rental. You will arrive to a fully set-up rig with nothing left to figure out.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Buffalo%2C%20TexasHow do payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Buffalo, TX?
Payment is simple and secure: everything runs through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or write a check to the host. You pay with a credit or debit card at booking, and the security deposit is placed as a temporary hold (not a charge) on your card, typically a few days before your trip starts. Deposits for Buffalo, TX rentals usually range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the size and value of the rig, and the hold is released after a clean return. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short walkaround video at pickup and drop-off. It is the single best way to keep your deposit return smooth and hassle-free.
