Campgrounds and RV parks near Caldwell, TX

Lake Somerville is the primary draw. Both state park units provide access to the lake for fishing, boating, paddling, and swimming, along with picnicking, mountain biking, geocaching, and birding on land. The 13-mile Lake Somerville Trailway links Birch Creek and Nails Creek and is open to hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders, though washed-out bridges have recently limited point-to-point travel between the units. Equestrian camping and day-use riding are permitted on the Trailway, with the Nails Creek Unit set up for horses. Riders must present a current negative Coggins test at park headquarters on arrival. Off the water, Caldwell is a short drive from Texas A&M University and the museums and restaurants of Bryan-College Station, and roughly two hours from Austin. Big Creek Marina is a popular launch point for larger boats.

Lake Somerville State Park is open year-round, and Texas Parks and Wildlife lists the busy season as running from the first weekend in March through the Fourth of July. Wildflowers peak in April, water temperatures warm through May, and holiday weekends between Memorial Day and Independence Day are the tightest for site availability. Midsummer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs in the mid-90s Fahrenheit and heat indices often higher. Shade is limited at some lakeside sites, so travelers plan water activities for morning and evening. Late summer into early fall can bring tropical moisture from the Gulf, and heavy rain events occasionally cause temporary trail or road closures at the park. Fall and winter are quieter and cooler, with mild days well suited to hiking the trailway and fishing from shore. Freezes occur but are usually short. Spring is the wettest part of the year in this part of Central Texas, so travelers watch the forecast for storm cells rolling in from the west.

At Lake Somerville State Park, sites at Birch Creek and Nails Creek offer water and electric hookups but no sewer connections. Both units have a dump station, restrooms with showers, picnic tables, fire rings with grills, and lantern poles. Pets are permitted on leash. Neither unit has a controlled entry gate. Overnight visitors arriving after the office closes register the following morning. Fish cleaning facilities are not provided, so anglers pack out remains. Trail conditions can change after heavy rain, and two bridges on the Trailway between the units have been washed out, limiting through travel. Travelers call Birch Creek or Nails Creek headquarters before long point-to-point rides or hikes. In-town parks like Brazos Valley RV Park and Rolling by the Dozen RV Park are geared to full-hookup travelers who want a paved pad and quicker highway access.
