Campgrounds and RV parks near Centerville, TX

Fort Boggy State Park is the main outdoor draw. Visitors can fish, kayak, and swim in the park lake, and hike or bike woodland and lakeside trails through post oak savannah habitat. There are no lifeguards at the swim area, so families should plan accordingly. Day trips extend the options. The Texas State Railroad runs excursion trains between Palestine and Rusk, and the Confederate Reunion Grounds State Historic Site near Mexia is another regional stop. Fairfield, home of the Freestone County Historical Museum, is a short drive west. Centerville itself is small and rural. Expect basic services along I-45, catfish houses, and easy access to backcountry roads for cycling, wildlife viewing, and birding across the surrounding ranchland.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping. March through May brings mild days, wildflower blooms across the Post Oak Savannah, and rising thunderstorm activity. May is typically the wettest month, so travelers should watch for flash-flood warnings in low-lying sites. September through November cools quickly and delivers some of the region's clearest stretches, though occasional tropical moisture can bring heavy rain in late summer and early fall. Summers are hot and humid. June through August routinely sees highs in the mid-90s Fahrenheit with high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Shaded sites, full hookups with reliable 50-amp service for air conditioning, and early-morning outdoor activity become important. Winters are short and mild but variable. Daytime highs often reach the upper 50s to low 60s, with occasional freezes and rare light snow in January or February. Many private RV parks remain open year-round, while state-park campsites at Fort Boggy stay bookable through the winter.

Campgrounds around Centerville lean rural and low-key. Private parks typically offer level gravel or grass sites with full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi of variable quality. Cell coverage is generally reliable near I-45 and thinner on backcountry roads. Fort Boggy State Park is not a full-service RV destination. Primitive camping is permitted near the check station, with no water or electricity, though restroom facilities are available. Cabins are also available, and quiet hours are enforced by staff. Expect summer heat, biting insects near water, and the possibility of feral hogs, snakes, and poison ivy in wooded areas. Burn bans are common during dry stretches, so RVers should confirm current fire restrictions before arrival and keep pets on a leash throughout the park.
