Camping near Clarendon, Texas
Clarendon sits in the eastern Texas Panhandle in Donley County, roughly 60 miles east of Amarillo along the Salt Fork of the Red River. The town's main draw for RV travelers is Greenbelt Reservoir, a roughly 1,500-acre lake owned and managed by the Greenbelt Municipal and Industrial Water Authority. The reservoir opened in 1968 and was built without state or federal funds, so it operates on a use-fee model rather than a state-park reservation system.
Most lakeside camping is clustered at three access points: Lakeside Marina, North Ramp, and Salt Fork Ramp. Lakeside Marina is the main hub, reached by driving 4 miles north of Clarendon on Texas Highway 70 and turning at the Greenbelt entrance on County Road N. It offers primitive and partial-hookup sites, restrooms, bait and tackle, and a boat launch.
Off the water, RV travelers headed east or west on Interstate 40 also use The Creek RV Park in Groom and Cactus Inn and RV Parking in McLean as full-hookup or short-stay stops within an hour of Clarendon.
Things to do around Clarendon
Greenbelt Reservoir is the primary activity anchor. The lake has a maximum depth of 84 feet and holds largemouth bass, crappie, walleye, channel catfish, and white bass, with flooded timber in the Kelly Creek and Salt Fork arms providing prime fish habitat. April through June is the best window for walleye, and spring is peak bass season when water temperatures reach around 60 degrees. Life jackets are required on the water at all times except when a boat is moored or beached.
Within day-trip range, Palo Duro Canyon State Park and Caprock Canyons State Park and Trailway offer hiking, scenic drives, and canyon overlooks. Travelers based in McLean can also walk to the Devil's Rope and Route 66 Museum and the restored first Phillips 66 station in Texas.

When to visit Clarendon

March - May
74° / 51°F 50 mmPrime fishing; severe storms and hail possible.
- summer
June - August
93° / 71°F 60 mmHot and sunny; hookups for AC strongly recommended.
- fall
September - November
73° / 48°F 35 mmMild days, cool nights; best overall camping window.
- winter
December - February
52° / 34°F 15 mmCool and dry; marina closes after first freeze.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV camping in this part of the Panhandle. March through May bring warming temperatures and the best fishing conditions on Greenbelt, though May is also the wettest month of spring, and severe-weather season peaks then. Thunderstorms with hail and occasional tornadoes are a real planning factor from April into June.
Summer runs hot. July is the warmest month, with average highs near 94°F and lows near 73°F, and heat indices routinely push into the triple digits. Shade and full hookups with 30/50-amp service for air conditioning matter more than scenery in July and August.
Winter is cool rather than harsh, but Lakeside Marina closes for the season after the first freeze, so lakeside services can be limited from late fall into early spring. January is the snowiest month, and snowfall is possible from October through April. Fall, particularly September and October, tends to offer the best mix of mild days, low rainfall, and open facilities.
How to book a site
Greenbelt Reservoir is private property of the Greenbelt Municipal and Industrial Water Authority, not a Texas state park, so bookings do not go through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system. A use fee applies, and the authority and Lakeside Marina are the direct contacts for camping information and lake maps. Sites at Lakeside Marina, North Ramp, and Salt Fork Ramp are generally first-come, first-served, and the marina closes for the season after the first freeze.
The Creek RV Park in Groom is a small property with only four pull-through, full-hookup sites, so calling ahead is recommended, and payment is cash or check. Cactus Inn and RV Parking in McLean has a limited number of electric and full-hookup spots at a Route 66 motel and is best booked by phone directly with the owner.
What to expect on the ground
Facilities around Greenbelt lean rustic. Lakeside Marina has restrooms, a boat launch, and bait and tackle on site, and camping and picnic areas include many spots with large trees, but expect primitive to partial-hookup service rather than resort amenities. Cell coverage in the Panhandle is generally usable on major carriers, but Wi-Fi at smaller parks is rare.
The Creek RV Park is intentionally minimal: four grassy pull-through sites with full hookups and 30/50-amp service, no showers, no laundry, and no Wi-Fi, on a farm-to-market road about 4 miles off I-40. Cactus Inn and RV Parking is a 1950s Route 66 motel property with a small number of electric and full-hookup spots, walking distance to a diner, a steakhouse, and Route 66 attractions in McLean.
RVs up to about 40 feet are accommodated at The Creek, and big rigs are accepted. Bring cash or check as a backup, and expect wide-open, windy terrain typical of the Panhandle.
