Campgrounds and RV parks near Claude, TX

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is the main draw. Visitors hike the Lighthouse Trail, drive the canyon-floor loop road, and book guided rides at the Old West Stables. The park has more than 30 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. In summer, the Pioneer Amphitheater hosts the outdoor musical TEXAS. MERUS Adventure opens private canyon terrain to off-roading in 4x4s, ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes, plus mountain biking, hiking, and caving on more than 6,500 acres. Trail difficulty ranges from beginner to expert. In Claude itself, the Armstrong County Museum covers local ranching history. Amarillo adds the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, the Amarillo Zoo, the Don Harrington Discovery Center, and Route 66 stops, all within roughly 40 minutes of town.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of the Panhandle. Daytime highs are moderate and cottonwoods along the canyon floor turn in October and early November. Spring can bring strong winds and afternoon thunderstorms, and trails at Palo Duro Canyon may close after wet weather or during excessive heat. Summer is the busiest season. Palo Duro Canyon regularly reaches capacity, and the TEXAS musical runs at the Pioneer Amphitheater. Temperatures inside the canyon can run 5 to 10 degrees hotter than on the rim, and on days with a National Weather Service heat advisory the Lighthouse, Comanche, GSL, and Rock Garden trails close from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Burn bans are common in dry stretches. Winters are short but cold at night, with freezing lows most nights in December, January, and February and occasional snow. Controlled hunts close the Equestrian area, Sponsored Youth Group Area, and backcountry hiking and camping for a stretch in early December, while the Rim Cabins, Sagebrush Camp Loop, and CCC/Triassic Trails stay open.

Terrain is high, flat plains cut by dramatic canyon walls. Elevations run near 3,400 feet, so nights cool off quickly even after hot days, and wind is a constant factor. Big rigs generally do well on U.S. 287 and Park Road 5, but interior roads at private ranches like MERUS Adventure include several miles of dirt, and staff sometimes advise leaving larger RVs on the rim during high wind. Gate hours at Palo Duro Canyon State Park run 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., with the office open until 5:30 p.m. Cell coverage inside the canyon is limited, so downloading maps in advance is worthwhile. Fire rules change with conditions. Burn bans prohibiting wood and charcoal fires are common, though containerized fuel stoves with a shut-off valve are typically allowed for cooking. Water spigots are available at campsites, but carrying extra water is wise given summer heat.
