Campgrounds near Clifton, Texas
Clifton sits in Bosque County in central Texas, roughly an hour northwest of Waco and about the same distance south of Fort Worth. The town is small, but it functions as a practical staging point for two Texas state parks and a stretch of Lake Whitney reservoir shoreline, which gives RV travelers a mix of hookup-heavy private parks and lake-focused public sites within a short drive.
Inside town, Hackberry Acres RV Park offers full-hookup sites within walking distance of the historic downtown square. American Inn and RV Park provides another close-in option for travelers who want restaurants and fuel nearby without going far from the rig.
For state-park stays, the Crosstimbers loop at Meridian State Park is the closest public campground, set on Lake Meridian just west of the town of Meridian. The Road Runner loop at Lake Whitney State Park sits on the far larger Brazos River reservoir, and Parsons Marina rounds out the lake options with waterfront RV sites on Lake Whitney.
Things to do around Clifton
Water recreation drives most trips. Lake Whitney covers roughly 23,500 acres and supports boating, swimming, scuba diving, water skiing, and fishing for largemouth, striped and white bass, blue catfish, and crappie. Lake Meridian is a smaller lake better suited to paddling, shoreline fishing, and quieter family days.
On land, Meridian State Park has hiking trails that loop the lake past limestone outcroppings and shaded overlooks. Lake Whitney State Park adds trails open to both hikers and bikers, plus a designated swim area and a fish cleaning shelter. The park also loans fishing gear for use on site.
Downtown Clifton offers small shops and eateries, and Waco museums are within an easy day-trip drive.

Central Texas has a subtropical climate: mild winters, hot summers, and a wet peak in late spring. At the Waco station, January averages around the upper 40s Fahrenheit and July averages near the mid 80s. Around Lake Whitney the first freeze typically arrives in late November, and the last freeze usually falls in mid-March.
March through October is peak camping season across the state parks, and summer plus holiday weekends fill fastest. Spring brings bluebonnets and other wildflowers along the lakeshore, making late March through April a popular window for family trips. Fall is generally drier and cooler, with pleasant camping weather stretching through October and into November.
Both Meridian and Lake Whitney State Parks stay open year-round, and Lake Whitney offers a weekly rate from November through February. Winter visitors can expect cooler nights, occasional hard freezes, and much lighter crowds.

Absolutely amazing experience! We had so much fun, and there was plenty of room for our group of 4 adults and 2 kids. Communication with the owner was excellent! They were very responsive and flexible with both pickup and drop-off. We’d definitely rent from them again if the opportunity comes up!

The RV was as advertised everything works and didn’t get to meet Dan but his son Andrew explained everything.
Don D. - Jun 2026
Dan and his teardrop are amazing!!! First - Dan - great communication, explained all the parts and best uses for the trailer, as well as any possible issues. Had all possible connectors, made sure everything was working, and that we were comfortable before handing the trailer over. Extremely accommodating when we needed to make changes! Second - Trailer - is awesome! Best sleep we have had camping (and we are glampers!), the microwave came in so handy when cooking, electrical hook-ups and plugs made everything so convenient, and the ceramic heater available to plug in made it comfortable inside while it was in freezing temperatures outside! We look forward to renting again! Also, so lucky this trailer is towable by our Honda CR-V!

How to book
Both nearby state parks use the Texas State Parks reservation system operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Sites can be booked online through the Texas State Parks reservation portal or by phone through the customer service center at (512) 389-8900. Reservations can be made up to five months in advance, so summer and holiday weekends often go the moment the window opens.
Private parks such as Hackberry Acres RV Park, American Inn and RV Park, and Parsons Marina take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For state parks, reserving a day-use pass in addition to a campsite is recommended, since Meridian and Lake Whitney both reach capacity on busy weekends.
What to expect on arrival
At Meridian State Park, the gate is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and the office is staffed 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Late arrivals must call the park before 4:45 p.m. on the arrival date for gate-code instructions, and the code is only released to holders of a confirmed reservation. In the Crosstimbers loop, sites 1 through 8 are pull-through and best suited to RVs over 20 feet, while sites 9 through 15 are limited to small pop-ups, tents, and vans.
At Lake Whitney State Park, the office runs 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the gate is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. After the office closes, campers with reservations pick a site from the kiosk listing across from headquarters and use the self-pay station. The gate combination is only issued to campers holding a valid camping permit. Road Runner sites carry water and electric hookups; full-hookup pull-throughs sized for big rigs are in the Horseshoe loop.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Clifton, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Clifton, TX?
RV rental in Clifton is refreshingly affordable compared to bigger Texas metros like Dallas or Austin. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs land between $250 and $400 nightly. Prices dip in the cooler shoulder months (late February and November), making that the smart-money window for a cheap RV rental Clifton getaway. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and message hosts about weekly discounts, since many Bosque County owners offer 10 to 20 percent off stays of five nights or more, perfect for exploring Lake Whitney without rushing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clifton%2C%20TexasWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Clifton?
Good news: a regular Texas (or home state) driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Clifton. There is no CDL, no special endorsement, and no RV-specific test required for any motorhome or trailer you will find on RVezy. You need to be at least 25 years old to be an approved driver, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there is no extra paperwork to chase down. Visiting from outside the US? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club before you fly in. Most first-time renters in Bosque County are surprised by how quick the approval process really is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Clifton booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pull out of the driveway. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the vehicle, which means a stray cedar branch on a Bosque County backroad or a minor bump at the Lake Whitney boat ramp will not ruin your trip. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your comfort zone (hosts do not pick this for you), and roadside help is just one call away. The peace of mind it delivers lets you focus on the scenery, not the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Clifton RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a clear, standardized cancellation policy on every reservation (hosts do not set this themselves), and you can review the exact terms before you confirm. If a host ever has to cancel on you, RVezy will refund your booking or provide travel credit so you can rebook with confidence. If life throws a curveball, severe Central Texas weather, a work change, or a family emergency, our support team will walk you through your options. Pro tip: book your Clifton RV rental early to secure the best rigs for Norse Country Fest or Lake Whitney weekends, knowing the cancellation terms are spelled out upfront.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Clifton?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Clifton options, just flip on the Pet-Friendly filter to see them instantly. Bosque County is a dream for dog owners: Lake Whitney State Park welcomes leashed pets on trails and at campsites, Meridian State Park (about 15 minutes west) allows leashed pups on every trail except swimming areas, and downtown Clifton's Bosque River walking paths are dog-approved too. Many hosts charge a small pet fee (often $25 to $75 per stay) and ask that pets stay off the furniture. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed, a quick heads-up keeps everyone happy.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-whitneyCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Clifton?
Yes, RV delivery Clifton is one of the most popular options on the platform, and it is a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig straight to Lake Whitney State Park, Meridian State Park, a US Army Corps of Engineers park, or a private ranch or family driveway in Bosque County. They will level it, hook up water and power, run the slides, and walk you through every switch before handing over the keys. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile round-trip from Clifton. Filter listings by Delivery to see availability, then message your host to confirm the drop-off address.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clifton%2C%20TexasHow far can I travel on a Clifton RV trip?
You have serious range from Clifton. Each host sets their own mileage policy: some include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and a growing number offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for a longer Clifton RV trip. Popular drives within easy reach include Waco and the Magnolia Silos (about 35 miles, 45 minutes), Fort Worth Stockyards (about 90 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes), Austin (about 130 miles, 2 hours 15 minutes), and Possum Kingdom Lake (about 110 miles, 2 hours). Filter for unlimited mileage if you are planning a multi-stop loop, it pays for itself fast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clifton%2C%20TexasWhere are the best campgrounds near Clifton, TX?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Clifton include Lake Whitney State Park (about 20 minutes east, with water/electric sites and shoreline views), Meridian State Park (about 15 minutes west, a quiet hidden gem with a spring-fed lake), Cedron Creek Park on Lake Whitney (a US Army Corps of Engineers park with electric and water sites), Lofers Bend Park (also Corps-run, great for boaters), and Steele Creek Park near Whitney for laid-back tent-and-RV mixing. Most fill up fast for Texas spring break and summer weekends. Pro tip: for RV camping Clifton trips on holiday weekends, book Lake Whitney sites the moment the five-month reservation window opens through Texas Parks and Wildlife, the lakefront loops disappear within hours.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-whitney/fees-facilities/campsitesWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Clifton?
Clifton has one of the longest RV seasons in Texas. The sweet spots are mid-March through late May (wildflowers along FM 219, highs in the 70s to low 80s) and mid-September through early November (cooler mornings, 70s to mid-80s, and Bosque County's fall festival season). Summer (June through August) gets hot, often in the mid-90s to around 100°F, but lakeside camping at Whitney works well if you have a strong AC. Winters are mild with highs in the 50s and 60s and occasional freezes, perfect for snowbirds and quiet getaways. Pro tip: target November for Clifton's Norse Country Heritage celebrations, you get cool weather and small-town charm rolled into one.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You are going to be just fine, first time renting an RV in Clifton is genuinely easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup: how to level the rig, run the generator, dump tanks, deploy slides, and operate the propane fridge. They send you off with their cell number, and RVezy support plus 24/7 roadside assistance has your back the whole trip. Bosque County's quiet two-lane highways like SH-6 and FM 219 are forgiving for new drivers, much friendlier than threading I-35 through Austin. Pro tip: book a travel trailer or Class C under 28 feet for your first trip, they handle like a big pickup and fit every local campground loop without drama.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Breathe easy: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy protection plan, so a flat tire on SH-22 or a dead battery at Lake Whitney is a quick phone call, not a trip-ender. One number connects you to tow help, tire service, jump-starts, lockout assistance, and fuel delivery anywhere around Clifton and across Texas. Your host is also a text away for quirky questions (where is the breaker reset, how does this awning retract). The nearest full-service RV repair shops are in Waco, about 35 miles south, with mobile RV techs that cover all of Bosque County. Pro tip: snap a photo of the VIN and license plate at pickup, it speeds up any roadside call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Clifton RV rental out of state or into Mexico?
Yes to interstate travel, no to Mexico. An RV road trip from Clifton across state lines into Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arkansas, or beyond is allowed on most listings, just confirm with your host before booking since some prefer to keep their rig in Texas. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance and protection coverage stop at the border. Popular interstate runs include Broken Bow, Oklahoma (about 4.5 hours), Hot Springs, Arkansas (about 6 hours), and Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico (about 8 hours). Pro tip: if you are eyeing a longer loop, search for motorhome rental Clifton listings with unlimited mileage and message the host with your full route, they will often green-light multi-state trips on the spot.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's fuel going to cost me on a Clifton RV trip?
Realistic budgeting helps a lot. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, Class A rigs 6 to 10 MPG, and a truck pulling a travel trailer typically runs 9 to 13 MPG. Gas in Clifton and nearby Waco usually sits below the national average, often 20 to 40 cents per gallon cheaper than Austin or Dallas. The Buc-ee's in Waco (about 35 miles south on I-35) is a favorite fuel-and-snack stop. Pro tip: fill up in Clifton or Hillsboro before heading west toward Possum Kingdom or Glen Rose, stations thin out on FM 56 and SH-144, and rural prices can creep up.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Clifton?
For peace of mind, book early, especially for Lake Whitney. Texas State Parks open reservations five months in advance through the official Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and Lake Whitney's lakefront sites get snapped up within hours for spring break (March), Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends. US Army Corps of Engineers parks like Cedron Creek and Lofers Bend book through Recreation.gov up to six months out and fill nearly as fast. Weekdays and shoulder-season weekends usually have openings within a week or two. Pro tip: if you strike out, look at Steele Creek Park or private RV parks around Whitney, they accept walk-ins more often and round out a great campervan rental Clifton experience.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-whitney/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat are the local driving conditions like around Clifton?
Driving an RV around Clifton is genuinely relaxing, this is rural Central Texas, not a metro maze. SH-6, SH-22, and FM 219 are well-maintained two-lane highways with gentle rolling hills through the Bosque River valley. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk (especially during the October to January rut), occasional cattle on county roads, and spring thunderstorms that can bring sudden hail or strong crosswinds. I-35 between Waco and Hillsboro is the only stretch where traffic and 18-wheelers get heavy. Pro tip: check DriveTexas.org before storms, and avoid low-water crossings on the Bosque River after heavy rain, flash flooding is the real local hazard.
drivetexas.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Clifton?
You will find solid setups. Lake Whitney State Park offers water and electric hookups (30/50 amp), hot showers, a dump station, and potable water fill stations. Meridian State Park has water and electric sites plus a central dump station and fresh-water spigot near the entrance. Cedron Creek and Lofers Bend (US Army Corps of Engineers parks) provide water and 30/50-amp electric, shared dump stations, and lake access. Most sites include a picnic table, fire ring, and gravel or paved pad. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks before leaving Lake Whitney, the next reliable dump station heading west toward Glen Rose is over 40 miles away.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-whitney/fees-facilitiesWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Clifton?
Comfort, basically. Most Clifton-area rentals sleep 4 to 8 people across a queen bed, bunk beds, and convertible dinettes or sofas. Standard kitchens include a propane stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink with pots, pans, and dishware stocked by the host. Bathrooms have a toilet, shower, and sink. Expect roof AC and furnace heat, a flat-screen TV, and seatbelted travel seats for everyone riding down the road. Generators come standard on most motorhomes, and many travel trailers include solar or a portable generator add-on. Cellular coverage is generally solid across Bosque County, so a hotspot works well at most campsites. Pro tip: ask hosts about their starter kit, many include linens, towels, and even a cooler.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clifton%2C%20TexasWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts offer?
Lots of helpful extras make your RV rental in Clifton turnkey. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, propane grills, generators, bike racks, kayaks, and even Starlink for the off-grid crowd. Pickup is usually at the host's property in or near Clifton, and many offer paid delivery to Lake Whitney, Meridian State Park, or a private address within Bosque County (typically $2 to $4 per mile round-trip). Mileage policies range from around 75 free miles per night to fully unlimited, ideal for a longer RV road trip from Clifton. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, dump, and pickup into a single quote and you will often save versus à la carte add-ons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clifton%2C%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Smooth and predictable. You pay through RVezy's secure platform with a credit or debit card, no cash, no third-party apps, no awkward driveway exchanges. Your total includes the nightly rate, host add-ons, taxes, and the protection plan you select at checkout. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held separately from your booking payment and released after the host confirms the rig comes back in the same shape it left. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff with your host, time-stamped on your phone. It takes two minutes, protects both sides, and helps your deposit land back in your account fast after your family RV trip Clifton wraps up.
