Campgrounds near Coleman, Texas
Coleman sits in the rolling prairie of west-central Texas, roughly halfway between Abilene and San Angelo. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Concho Valley and the Colorado River watershed, with several reservoirs within a short drive that anchor most local camping.
Nearby water includes Hords Creek Lake and Lake Coleman, plus O.H. Ivie Reservoir to the southwest. Hords Creek Lake, a US Army Corps of Engineers lake, sits about 8.7 miles west of Coleman on FM 153 and offers numerous camping sites and day-use opportunities including a swim beach, picnic tables, boat ramps, and RV sites with 30 AMP or 50 AMP service and full hookups available. Lake Coleman is located approximately 14 miles north of Coleman on US-283 and is the main water source for the City of Coleman.
Private RV parks in the area include M Bar H Lodge and RV Park, Wall's Ponderosa RV Park & Marina, and Sandy Beach RV Park. Padgitt Park at O.H. Ivie Reservoir sits on one of the top trophy largemouth bass lakes in Texas, and The Hideout Golf Club and Resort caters to members. Coleman itself offers grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops before heading out to the water.
Things to do around Coleman
Fishing drives most trips out here. Hords Creek Lake is stocked with largemouth bass, crappie, channel catfish, blue catfish, flathead catfish, and bluegill, and O.H. Ivie has become nationally known for trophy largemouth bass. Hords Creek Lake has two developed campgrounds with 120-plus hookup sites, and amenities at both include drinking water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, trash collection, and a dump station; Lakeside sits on the north side and Flatrock on the south, with some full hookups available at each.
In town, Coleman's City Park on the banks of Hord's Creek has picnic facilities, a small museum, tennis courts, a recreation center with a swimming pool, playground equipment, and a disc golf course. Day trips reach Abilene State Park, the Concho River in San Angelo, and the historic downtown squares of Ballinger and Brownwood.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Texas. The best time of year to visit Coleman is mid-March through May and October through mid-November. March through May brings wildflowers, mild days, and pre-summer bass fishing, though late-spring thunderstorms can move through quickly. Fall from late September into November delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and better weekend availability at the Corps campgrounds.
Summer runs hot. Afternoon highs frequently push into the mid-90s, and shaded sites along the oak-lined shoreline are the most comfortable choice. Water levels can drop in late summer during drought years, so travelers with boats should check current lake conditions before towing.
Winter is mild but variable. Coleman has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters, and average winter highs sit around 56°F. Cold fronts can still bring freezing overnight lows, so RVers should be ready to protect hoses and tanks on the coldest nights.
How to book campgrounds near Coleman
Hords Creek Lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and campground reservations typically open several months in advance through Recreation.gov; for peak season visits, book as early as possible, and check individual facility pages for specific booking windows and availability. Holiday weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill first.
Private parks such as M Bar H Lodge and RV Park, Wall's Ponderosa RV Park & Marina, and Sandy Beach RV Park take direct reservations by phone or through their own websites. Padgitt Park at O.H. Ivie is operated locally and fills quickly during major bass tournaments, so calling ahead is recommended. The Hideout Golf Club and Resort limits access to members and their guests.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into the lake areas are paved two-lane county and farm-to-market routes, with the final approach on gravel loops inside the campgrounds. Big rigs generally fit at the Corps campgrounds and the private parks, but a few older pull-throughs are short, so confirming site length at booking is worthwhile. Amenities at the Corps campgrounds include drinking water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, trash collection, and a dump station, and campsites have a paved parking spur, table, fire ring, and grill.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Corps of Engineers have discovered that invasive zebra mussels have completely infested Hords Creek Lake, and visitors should take precautions to prevent the spread of zebra mussels to other waterbodies by following all Clean, Drain, Dry guidance. Cell coverage around the lake is patchy, so downloading maps before arrival is worthwhile.
