Campgrounds and RV parks near Cross Plains, TX

Water activities dominate. Lake Brownwood covers roughly 7,300 surface acres and is stocked with crappie, perch, catfish and bass, making it the region's main draw for fishing, boating, water skiing, and paddling. Lake Brownwood State Park adds hiking trails, including the 2.9-mile Nopales Ridge Trail, which is the only trail open to biking, along with a swimming area and boat access on a peninsula in the reservoir. In town, Cross Plains is best known as the home of pulp writer Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan the Barbarian. The Robert E. Howard House and Museum at 625 NW 5th Street draws literary visitors each June for Howard Days, held on the second full weekend in June. Day trips reach Abilene for its zoo and frontier museums, and Brownwood for local history museums and the Pecan Bayou paddling corridor.

Spring and fall are the practical camping windows. From March through May, daytime highs sit in the mild-to-warm range and wildflowers bloom across the Cross Timbers, though thunderstorms and hail are common in April and May as spring storm systems move across the Rolling Plains. Fall brings a second peak, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and fewer bugs from mid-September through early November. Summer is hot. Afternoon highs regularly push into the mid-90s and above, and shade at lakeside sites is at a premium. Summer is the busy season for all facilities at Lake Brownwood State Park, so reserve early, especially for weekends and holidays. Winters are generally mild but variable. Cold fronts can drop lows below freezing, and prescribed burns are planned between October and April, depending on weather, and prescribed fire operations and associated smoke may impact a visit. Some camping areas, lodging facilities, trails, and day-use areas may be closed for public safety, so contact the park before arrival.

Lake Brownwood State Park has front gates that are automatically closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and overnight guests are provided with the gate code. Late arrivals with or without reservations for campsites are instructed not to use the Self-Pay and to register at Park Headquarters by 9 a.m. the next morning. No-shows past noon of the day after the scheduled arrival date lose the rest of the reservation, with entrance fees refunded but other fees forfeited. At the state park, Council Bluff offers 20 full-hookup sites with 50/30/20-amp electric, water, and sewer, while Willow Point has 35 electric sites with 50/30/20-amp service and water nearby. Private RV parks in the area typically offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, gravel or paved pads, and modest amenities. Expect rural driving conditions on the final approach: narrow shoulders, occasional livestock, and limited services after dark.
