Campgrounds near De Leon, Texas
De Leon sits in Comanche County in north-central Texas, roughly 100 miles southwest of Fort Worth, at the crossroads of U.S. 377 and State Highway 6. The town anchors a rural stretch of farm country between Stephenville and Eastland, giving RV travelers access to Lake Leon on the Leon River and the surrounding Cross Timbers country.
Campground options near De Leon lean toward small private RV parks and lakeside sites rather than large resorts. Little Star RV Park, LLC sits closest to town, while Dublin RV Park and the Stephenville/Dublin KOA cover the eastern approach along Highway 377. To the west, Leon Reservoir Dam, operated by the Eastland County Water Supply District, offers camping tied to lake access, and La Mancha Lake Ranch rounds out the area with private ranch-style sites on the Lake Leon shoreline.
Most parks operate year-round and serve travelers passing between Dallas-Fort Worth and West Texas, as well as anglers targeting largemouth bass on Lake Leon.
Things to do near De Leon
Lake Leon is the main outdoor draw. The 1,756-acre reservoir on the Leon River is best known for largemouth bass tournament fishing and also supports channel catfish, white crappie, sunfish, and white bass. Boat ramps and private recreation areas provide shore and water access for anglers and boaters.
Beyond the lake, visitors can tour Dublin, the self-styled Irish capital of Texas, and Stephenville, the Cowboy Capital, both under 30 minutes east. Downtown Dublin features the Dublin Bottling Works and Rodeo Heritage Museum. In early August, De Leon hosts the Peach and Melon Festival and Tractor Pull, a community celebration dating to 1914 with a parade, carnival, seed spitting contest, and free watermelon slicing downtown.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in this part of Texas. From March through May, daytime highs climb from the 70s into the 80s, wildflowers bloom across the Cross Timbers, and lake temperatures warm enough for boating. May is also the wettest stretch, averaging over six inches of rain, with thunderstorms and occasional severe weather moving through north-central Texas.
Summers are hot and muggy, with July and August highs averaging in the mid-90s and afternoon heat indices frequently higher. Anglers still fish Lake Leon early and late in the day, and campgrounds along the water fill quickly around the Fourth of July and the De Leon Peach and Melon Festival in early August.
Winters are short and generally mild, with January highs near 56°F, but cold fronts can bring freezing nights and brief ice events. October typically has the most reliable weather, with warm days, cool nights, and steady fishing action.
How to book campgrounds near De Leon
Private parks in the area handle reservations directly. The Stephenville/Dublin KOA takes bookings through the KOA website or app, with pull-through and back-in sites, extended-stay options, and 50/30-amp hookups. Little Star RV Park, LLC, Dublin RV Park, and La Mancha Lake Ranch generally accept reservations by phone or through their own websites, and short weekday stays are often available on shorter notice.
Camping around Leon Reservoir is coordinated through the Eastland County Water Supply District and the private resorts on the lake, not a state or federal reservation system. For summer weekends and the Peach and Melon Festival in early August, book several weeks ahead. Bass tournament dates also tighten availability on lakefront sites.
What to expect on the ground
This is small-town rural Texas. Roads into the campgrounds are paved but narrow, and cell coverage is generally reliable near town and along the highways, weaker in ranch country to the south and west. Most RV parks offer full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, and the Stephenville/Dublin KOA provides modern facilities including Wi-Fi, laundry, and accessible showers.
Expect open, partly shaded sites rather than dense forest. Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in De Leon, Dublin, and Stephenville, with larger stores in Stephenville. Summer travelers should plan for strong sun and heat, carry extra water, and watch for afternoon thunderstorms in spring.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near De Leon, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in De Leon, TX?
RV rental in De Leon, TX, is one of the most affordable ways to explore Texas Hill Country and the Cross Timbers region. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $130 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $250 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes run $250 to $400 per night, with hosts setting their own pricing. Weekends and Peach and Melon Festival weekends in August fill fast, so book early for the best rates. For a cheap RV rental in De Leon, try midweek bookings or shoulder-season dates in March or October. Pro tip: many hosts offer weekly discounts of 10 to 20 percent, which can make a Proctor Lake fishing week surprisingly budget-friendly.
cityofdeleon.org/de-leon-rv-site/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in De Leon?
Good news: your regular Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in De Leon for nearly every rig on RVezy. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license if the motorhome has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, which excludes most travel trailers, campervans, and Class C motorhomes available on the platform. You must be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the booking process. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the paperwork is before hitting Highway 6 toward Proctor Lake.
dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/classes-driver-licensesWhat protection comes with my De Leon RV rental?
Every RV rental in De Leon booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the fun instead of the what-ifs. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind even if a hailstorm rolls through the Cross Timbers or a deer darts onto FM 2861. RVezy offers multiple protection tiers, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host. Pro tip: pick your tier based on how far you are traveling, longer hauls to Big Bend or the Gulf Coast usually justify upgrading to a higher tier for added peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my De Leon plans change?
Booking your De Leon RV trip is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book. Cancellation flexibility depends on how far ahead of your trip start date you cancel, and RVezy also has provisions for unexpected situations, which matters in Central Texas where spring thunderstorms can pop up quickly. You will not see different policies on different listings because cancellation is handled at the platform level, not by hosts. Pro tip: book sooner rather than later for the best Proctor Lake waterfront sites, knowing you have built-in flexibility if your schedule shifts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a De Leon RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in De Leon is easy to find. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see only listings where hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots, and message the host before booking to share your dog's size and breed. Once you're here, Proctor Lake's Copperas Creek and Sowell Creek campgrounds both allow leashed pets on trails and at sites, and the De Leon City Park RV Campground welcomes dogs as long as they're leashed and supervised. The 3,100-foot walking trail at the community park is a great morning loop. Pro tip: pack a Texas-tough tie-out and a shade tarp since summer pavement gets hot, and bring plenty of fresh water for both of you.
cityofdeleon.org/de-leon-community-park-rv-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in De Leon?
Yes, RV delivery in De Leon is one of the smartest moves for first-time renters and out-of-towners flying into DFW. Many hosts will drive a motorhome rental in De Leon straight to Proctor Lake's Sowell Creek or Copperas Creek campground, the City RV Park on Texas Street, or even a friend's ranch outside town, then level it, hook up water, sewer, and 30/50-amp power, and walk you through every system. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see which listings include it, then message the host with your exact site number. Pro tip: delivery fees usually scale with distance, so picking a campground within 30 miles of De Leon keeps costs low and gets you fishing faster.
swf-wc.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/Lakes/Proctor-Lake/How far can I drive on an RV rental from De Leon?
Your travel range is wide open. Most De Leon hosts include a daily mileage allowance (typically 100 to 150 miles per day), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a longer Texas loop. From De Leon you're roughly 105 miles to Fort Worth, 150 miles to Dallas, 175 miles to Austin, 240 miles to San Antonio, and about 110 miles to Possum Kingdom Lake. Extra miles, if you exceed the allowance, usually run 25 to 45 cents per mile. Pro tip: check the listing's mileage policy before booking and message the host if you're planning a long RV road trip from De Leon to Big Bend or the Gulf, since some will bundle in extra miles at a discount.
txdot.gov/data-maps/maps.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near De Leon for an RV trip?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in De Leon. The best campgrounds near De Leon include the De Leon City RV Park with full hookups at just $20 per night for 30-amp service (a great value), and three U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks on Proctor Lake just 15 minutes away: Sowell Creek (61 sites, fishing pier, boat ramp), Copperas Creek (66 sites with full hookups, swim beach), and Promontory (seasonal, April through November). Lake Brownwood State Park is about an hour southwest if you want a Texas State Park experience. Pro tip: Sowell Creek's sites 31 through 61 close from October 1 to March 31, so winter visitors should target Copperas Creek instead.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/504When is the best time to visit De Leon in an RV?
The sweet spot for a De Leon RV trip is mid-March through late May, and again from late September through early November, when daytime highs sit comfortably in the 70s and low 80s and the Leon River corridor turns lush and green. Summer days regularly hit 94 to 95 degrees with a heat index over 107 in August, so plan early-morning hikes and evening lake swims if you visit then. Winters are short and mild with highs around 57 degrees, occasional light snow, and beautiful clear nights for stargazing. Pro tip: time your trip with the De Leon Peach and Melon Festival in August or the Hog Slam and Jam in the fall for a quintessential small-town Texas weekend.
forecast.weather.gov/zipcity.php?inputstring=De_Leon%2C+TXI've never rented an RV before. Will I be able to handle it?
You've got this, and you won't be left to figure it out alone. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery) covering the generator, propane, slide-outs, water systems, leveling, and dump procedures, and you can message them anytime during your trip. First time renting an RV in De Leon is actually a great place to start because the roads around Comanche County are wide, flat, and lightly trafficked compared to DFW or Austin. Choose a smaller Class C or campervan rental in De Leon if you want extra confidence behind the wheel. Pro tip: do a slow loop around the De Leon High School parking lot before heading out, ten minutes of practice makes a huge difference.
txdps.state.tx.us/driverlicense/driverhandbook.htmWhat happens if something breaks down on my De Leon RV trip?
Take a breath: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking when you have a protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are parked at Proctor Lake or rolling down US-377 toward Brownwood. Roadside covers things like flat tires, battery jumps, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. For RV-system issues like a finicky water pump or a slide that will not retract, message your host first since they know their rig best, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after every trip to back you up. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before you leave the driveway, two minutes now saves stress later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from De Leon?
De Leon sits in a sweet spot for a Texas RV road trip. Popular routes include heading 100 miles west to Abilene and on to Big Bend National Park (about 450 miles), 110 miles northeast to the Dallas-Fort Worth Stockyards, 175 miles south through Lampasas to Austin and the Hill Country wineries, and 95 miles southwest to Lake Brownwood and Inks Lake State Park. Cross-border travel: you can take your RV anywhere in the continental U.S., but RVezy bookings do not allow travel into Mexico because insurance won't cover it. Pro tip: the Bankhead Highway (now US-180) west of De Leon is a gorgeous, low-traffic alternative to I-20 for getting to West Texas.
nps.gov/bibe/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for?
Plan realistically and you'll come in under budget. Travel trailers don't burn fuel directly, but your tow vehicle will typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG). Class B campervans average 16 to 20 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. Gas prices around De Leon and Comanche County usually run slightly below the Texas state average. For a typical weekend at Proctor Lake (under 100 miles round-trip), budget $40 to $80 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in De Leon or Stephenville before heading deeper into ranch country, stations get sparse west of Comanche toward Brownwood.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near De Leon?
For Proctor Lake's Corps of Engineers campgrounds (Sowell Creek, Copperas Creek, and Promontory), reserve through Recreation.gov, the official federal booking system, ideally 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends and holidays, and at least 2 weeks ahead for spring and fall. The De Leon City RV Park is much more relaxed: register online through the City of De Leon's website with payment in advance, and weekday spots are often available the same week. Pro tip: Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends at Copperas Creek sell out the day reservations open (6 months prior at 8 a.m. Central), so set a phone reminder for that exact moment.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/504What are the driving conditions like around De Leon?
Driving around De Leon is refreshingly easy, especially compared to big-city Texas. State Highway 6 and US-377 are the main routes, with wide lanes, gentle terrain, and light traffic through ranchland and pecan orchards. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk, occasional cattle on county roads, and sudden Central Texas thunderstorms from April through June that can drop heavy rain and even hail. Avoid driving the back farm-to-market roads during a hard rain since low-water crossings flood quickly. Pro tip: download an offline map before you go, cell coverage is solid in town and around Proctor Lake but thins out on the ranch roads toward Sipe Springs and Desdemona.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near De Leon?
You will find more than you would expect. The De Leon City RV Park offers full hookups (water, sewer, electric) with both 30-amp and 50-amp service, a 3,100-foot walking trail, playground, and pavilion. Proctor Lake's Copperas Creek and Sowell Creek campgrounds have full hookups at many sites, hot showers, restroom facilities, fishing piers, boat ramps, and swim beaches. Dump stations are available at the De Leon City Park and at the Proctor Lake campgrounds. Potable water fill-up is available at every campground in the area. Pro tip: shoreline sites at Copperas Creek with direct lake access and natural shade are a rare combo worth booking months ahead through Recreation.gov.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/504What's typically included inside a De Leon RV rental?
Today's RV rental in De Leon comes loaded for comfort. Expect a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, microwave, propane stove, often an oven), a bathroom with shower and toilet, real beds (queen up front, bunks or convertible dinettes for kids), air conditioning powered by shore power or generator, propane heating for cool spring nights, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger as required by Texas law. Most listings include a TV, and many add WiFi hotspots, outdoor speakers, and onboard generators for boondocking. Linens and kitchenware are often included, check the listing's amenities list. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count on RVezy to match your group, and message the host if you want specifics on AC tonnage for August heat.
txdps.state.tx.us/section/highway-patrol/safety-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in De Leon offer all kinds of helpful extras to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include camp chairs and outdoor rugs ($15-$25), bedding and towel packages ($25-$50), generators for boondocking ($15-$30 per day), bike racks, kayaks, BBQ grills, and propane top-offs. Pickup is usually from the host's home or driveway in or near De Leon, with delivery available from many hosts (delivery fees often scale by mile). Mileage policies vary by listing, daily allowances of 100-150 miles are typical, and a few offer unlimited miles. Pro tip: use Instant Book listings if you're planning last-minute, and ask hosts to bundle add-ons since many will discount when you take multiple items.
txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle/registering-a-vehicleHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, with no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (usually $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) and released back to your card after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, typically within a few days of trip end. To avoid any deposit hiccups, take time-stamped photos of the RV at pickup and dropoff (inside and out), return it with the fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement, and empty the tanks at the De Leon City Park dump or any Proctor Lake dump station. Pro tip: a quick 5-minute walk-around video at pickup is the single best way to keep your deposit safe.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in De Leon during winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals in De Leon are a hidden gem. Winters here are short and mild with average highs around 57 degrees and lows in the upper 30s, with only a few days of light snow per year (mostly in January and February). Many Proctor Lake campgrounds stay open year-round, though Sowell Creek closes sites 31 to 61 from October 1 to March 31, and Promontory typically closes outside the April to November season. Look for RVs with heated holding tanks and confirm the host can demonstrate the propane furnace at pickup. Pro tip: winter is peak crappie and hybrid striper fishing season at Proctor Lake, and you will often have the lake views to yourself, an underrated family RV trip in De Leon for outdoor lovers.
