Campgrounds near Elgin, Texas
Elgin sits about 25 miles east of Austin along U.S. Highway 290 in Bastrop County, giving RV travelers a quieter base within reach of the state capital and the Lost Pines region to the southeast. The town is known for its sausage and barbecue and functions as a practical stop for renters moving between Austin and Houston.
Private RV parks close to town include Colinas RV Park, Great Escapes RV Park at Elgin, East Austin RV Park (formerly Willow Creek), Hope Hill Park, and Hope Hill RV Park. Most offer full hookups, gated access, and pull-through or back-in sites sized for larger rigs, and several cater to both short weekend stays and extended monthly bookings.
For state-park camping, Bastrop State Park sits southeast of Elgin in the Lost Pines, and McKinney Falls State Park lies southwest near Austin. Lake Bastrop North Shore Park, operated by the Lower Colorado River Authority, adds a lakeside option with a boat ramp and swimming access within easy driving distance of Elgin.
Things to do around Elgin
Downtown Elgin is the main draw for food-focused stops, with long-running smokehouses and a walkable historic square. Circuit of the Americas, the Formula 1 track southeast of Austin, is a common day trip for race weekends and driving experiences.
Outdoor options concentrate around the Lost Pines. Bastrop State Park offers about seven miles of hiking trails through recovering loblolly pine forest, plus a summer swimming pool operated by the City of Bastrop. Lake Bastrop has swimming areas, boat ramps, and paddling on both the North Shore and South Shore parks run by the LCRA.
Families staying longer often add trips into Austin for the Texas State Capitol, Zilker Park, and Barton Springs, or head to McKinney Falls State Park for swimming in Onion Creek and hikes to the Upper and Lower Falls.

Spring and fall are the practical windows for RV travel in the Elgin area. March through May brings mild temperatures, wildflowers along area roadsides, and the region's wettest stretch, with May typically the peak rainfall month. September through November cools off gradually and is generally considered the most comfortable time to camp, with highs easing from the 90s in September into the 60s and 70s by November.
Summers are hot and humid. Daytime highs regularly exceed 90 degrees F from June through August, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Shaded sites, working air conditioning, and early-morning activity plans matter more than usual during this stretch.
Winter is short and mild but not without cold snaps. Overnight lows dip near freezing on the coldest nights, and occasional hard freezes can affect hoses and connections. Central Texas is also subject to burn bans during dry periods, so charcoal and open-flame rules should be checked with the county before arrival.

Alan’s RV was nice and cozy. Even on short notice he was able to provide the RV on a busy 4th of July weekend. He was great at communicating with me and would definitely recommend.

Booking a campground near Elgin
Texas state parks use a single reservation system run by Texas Parks and Wildlife. Overnight camping and lodging can be booked up to five months in advance, with the booking window opening at 8 a.m. Central time. Day passes can be reserved up to one month ahead and are strongly recommended for popular parks like Bastrop and McKinney Falls, which routinely fill on weekends and holidays.
Same-day campsites, if any remain, can be booked up to 4 p.m. on the arrival date, but weekends and school holidays generally require advance reservations. A 14-day in, 14-day out rule applies to all reservable sites at McKinney Falls.
Private parks near Elgin, including Colinas RV Park and Great Escapes RV Park at Elgin, typically book directly through their own websites or by phone and offer nightly, weekly, and monthly stays.
What to expect on-site
Private parks around Elgin generally offer full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), gated entry, laundry, and Wi-Fi, with pull-through and back-in sites that accommodate larger motorhomes. Reviewers highlight spacing, tree cover, and proximity to grocery and downtown barbecue as recurring positives; a few sites near U.S. 290 note road noise.
At Bastrop State Park, campers can choose between full-hookup RV sites, water-and-electric sites, and walk-in tent sites, along with historic CCC-era cabins. McKinney Falls offers water and electric sites and remodeled cabins.
Cell coverage is generally solid across the Elgin area. Bring shade, insect repellent, and a plan for pets: dogs must remain leashed in Texas state parks and are not permitted inside park buildings.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Elgin, TX
How much does an RV rental in Elgin cost?
An RV rental in Elgin is one of the more affordable ways to explore Central Texas and the Austin area. Nightly rates on RVezy generally start around $90 to $130 for travel trailers, $130 to $200 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 and up for larger Class A rigs, with hosts setting their own pricing. To find a cheap RV rental in Elgin, look for midweek pickups, book outside of SXSW and Austin City Limits weekends, and filter for travel trailers with delivery so you skip towing. Many Elgin hosts offer weekly discounts for stays of five nights or longer, which can stretch your budget across a full Hill Country loop.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elgin,TexasDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Elgin?
A regular driver's license is all you need for virtually every RV you'll book on RVezy in Elgin. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class B license for single vehicles over 26,000 pounds GVWR, and almost every Class C motorhome, campervan, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on the platform falls well under that threshold. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the booking flow. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home country auto club before you fly into Austin Bergstrom and you're ready to rent an RV in Elgin.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Elgin RV rental?
Every RV rental in Elgin booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included. During checkout you choose your coverage level, with tiers that protect against most accidental damage to the vehicle for added peace of mind. The plan is set by RVezy, not the host, so coverage is consistent across every listing. It covers the kinds of mishaps that worry first-time renters, like a scraped fender at a Bastrop State Park campsite or a cracked windshield on Highway 290. Review the protection tiers carefully if you're planning longer drives toward the Hill Country.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Elgin RV trip plans change?
Booking an RV in Elgin is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the individual host, so every booking follows the same consistent rules. Refunds depend on how far out you cancel relative to your trip start, and the full terms are published on the RVezy Help Center rather than on individual listings. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your trip can be rebooked. Book early for fall, when Austin City Limits and Formula 1 weekends fill every RV near Elgin fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Elgin?
Elgin is a great launchpad for a pet-friendly RV rental, and many local hosts welcome dogs and cats. Just check the Pet-Friendly filter when you search on RVezy, message the host to share your pet's size and breed, and you're set. On the road, Bastrop State Park allows leashed pets on most trails, Lake Bastrop North and South Shore parks have shaded pet-friendly campsites, and several Elgin-area RV parks have on-site dog runs. Pack a collapsible water bowl: Central Texas heat ramps up quickly, and shaded sites under Elgin's live oaks are your dog's best friend in summer.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/bastropCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Elgin?
Yes, RV delivery in Elgin is one of the easiest ways to skip the learning curve. Many RVezy hosts will tow the RV directly to your campground, driveway, or event venue, level it, hook up water, sewer, and 30/50 amp electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery destinations include Great Escapes RV Resort just outside Elgin, Colinas RV Park near downtown Elgin, and Bastrop State Park about 20 miles south. Filter listings by Delivery to see hosts who offer it along with their distance-based rates. Delivery turns a campervan rental in Elgin into a true pull-up-and-relax experience, perfect for first-timers.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elgin,TexasHow far can I drive on a typical Elgin RV trip?
You can cover a lot of ground from Elgin without long highway days because so many bucket-list destinations are within a tank of fuel. Austin is just 25 miles west on Highway 290, Bastrop State Park is about 20 miles south, San Antonio and the River Walk are roughly 100 miles southwest, Fredericksburg wine country is around 100 miles west, and Houston sits about 165 miles east on I-10. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day) with additional miles available for a per-mile fee, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Ask the host to bundle a mileage package upfront if you're planning a full Hill Country RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elgin,TexasWhere can I stay overnight in an RV near Elgin?
You have plenty of RV camping options near Elgin within a 30-mile radius. Great Escapes RV Resort offers full-hookup sites with a pool, fitness center, and dog park. Colinas RV Park, a short drive from historic downtown Elgin off Highway 290, has shaded, gated sites among mature trees. A short drive south, Bastrop State Park rents sites among the Lost Pines loblolly forest and is reservable through Texas Parks and Wildlife. Skip overnight parking in retail lots: a real campground gives you sewer, water, and that quintessential Texas porch-light glow.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/bastrop/fees-facilities/campsitesWhen is the best time of year for an RV rental in Elgin?
The sweet spot for renting an RV in Elgin is mid-October through late April, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 60s to mid-80s and nights cool off nicely for campfires. Spring (March to early May) brings wildflowers and bluebonnets along Highway 290, while October and November deliver crisp trail weather at Bastrop State Park's Lost Pines. Summer is doable but hot: July and August highs often climb into the mid-90s, and air conditioning becomes essential. Winter rarely sees snow, and Christmas Hill Country RV trips are popular. Book mid-March early. SXSW pulls every available RV near Austin and Elgin off the market quickly.
weather.gov/ewx/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be ready to drive one out of Elgin?
Yes, and you'll be surprised how quickly it clicks, especially if this is your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you an in-person walkthrough at pickup, covering propane and water systems, backing up, and using the awning. Many Elgin hosts also stay just a text away during your trip. The rural roads around Elgin (Highway 95, FM 1704, Highway 290) are wide, flat, and lightly trafficked, making them ideal for getting comfortable before you head into Austin or the Hill Country. Choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet for your first booking. They drive almost like an oversized van.
rvezy.com/blog/first-time-rv-renter-guideWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking in Elgin includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 290, a dead battery at Lake Bastrop, or an electrical hiccup at your campsite is just a phone call away from help. Your host is also typically the fastest first call, since they know their RV inside and out. RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after every trip if anything escalates. Snap photos of the RV at pickup and save the host's number plus the RVezy support number to your phone before you pull out of Elgin.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Elgin RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Cross-state RV road trips from Elgin are allowed and popular, so you can chase New Orleans (about 510 miles east on I-10), Big Bend National Park (around 470 miles west), or even the New Mexico border for a Carlsbad Caverns loop. Travel to Mexico, however, is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan and roadside assistance do not extend across the border. Confirm long-haul plans with your host through the listing's message thread before you book so mileage and trip length work for both of you. South Padre Island, about 350 miles south of Elgin, makes a great beachfront finish to a Texas RV road trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Elgin RV trip?
Texas has some of the lowest gas prices in the country, which helps your fuel budget. Regular unleaded around Elgin typically runs in the low-to-mid $2 to $3 per gallon range at stations along Highway 290 and in nearby Austin, with prices fluctuating week to week. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get 15 to 20, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 9 to 14 mpg). For a typical 300-mile weekend loop through Bastrop, Austin, and back to Elgin, plan on roughly $70 to $120 in fuel. Fill up at the Buc-ee's in Bastrop or Giddings: the pumps are RV-friendly with high canopies and easy pull-throughs.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Elgin?
For Texas state parks, book as early as possible. Texas Parks and Wildlife opens reservations up to five months in advance through its official reservation system, and Bastrop State Park's full-hookup sites disappear quickly for spring and fall weekends. Private RV parks like Great Escapes RV Resort and Colinas RV Park typically have more flexibility and can often be booked one to four weeks out. For F1 race weekends at Circuit of the Americas (about 20 miles from Elgin) and Austin City Limits, lock in your spot three to six months ahead. Weekday arrivals often open up sites that look fully booked on weekends.
