Camping near Glidden, Texas
Glidden is an unincorporated community in Colorado County, sitting just north of Interstate 10 and about three miles west of Columbus. The location puts RV travelers roughly halfway between Houston and San Antonio, which makes the area a common overnight stop and a practical base for exploring the middle Colorado River corridor.
Camping options cluster along the river and along the I-10 and US-90A corridors. Colorado River RV Campground is a large Thousand Trails property set among pecan groves on the river. Whispering Oaks RV Park and Iron Horse RV Resort serve travelers looking for full-hookup sites close to town, while Waldo's Camp is a smaller, private, reservation-only riverside spot near Columbus. Splashway Water Park and RV, in nearby Sheridan on US-90A, pairs a family waterpark with a full-service RV campground.
The surrounding country is flat to gently rolling ranchland and river bottom, with white-tailed deer, armadillo, and heavy birdlife around the river.
Things to do around Glidden
The Colorado River is the main draw. Guests at Colorado River RV Campground can hike wooded trails, fish, canoe, and watch wildlife on the property, and Waldo's Camp offers private RV sites with river access on the same stretch of water.
Families traveling with kids typically build a day around Splashway Water Park and RV in Sheridan, which combines slides, a wave pool, and other on-site attractions. Columbus, three miles east, adds a walkable historic square, small museums, and river outfitters. About an hour northeast, Stephen F. Austin State Park on the Brazos River provides five miles of hiking trails, a nature center, and ranger programs.

The area has a humid subtropical climate. Spring, from March through May, is the most popular window for tent and RV travel: wildflowers bloom along I-10, temperatures are mild, and the river is usually running well. May is one of the wettest months on average, so expect afternoon thunderstorms and check river levels before any water activities.
Summer is hot and humid, with highs commonly in the 90s Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. This is peak season for Splashway Water Park and RV and for family river trips, and sites at popular campgrounds fill quickly on weekends. Burn bans are common in dry stretches and can shut down campfires with little notice.
Fall brings cooler nights and lighter crowds, though the Gulf hurricane season peaks in September, and remnants of tropical systems can bring heavy rain to Colorado County. Winter is mild, with occasional freezes, and the area is a well-known snowbird destination.
Booking and reservations
Private campgrounds around Glidden and Columbus book directly. Colorado River RV Campground is a Thousand Trails property; nightly stays can be booked without a membership, and members get park-to-park access and longer booking windows. From April 15 to September 15, reservations at that park are capped at 14 days per site. Waldo's Camp is reservation-only with a coded security gate, and site visits are by appointment.
Splashway Water Park and RV takes direct reservations for RV sites, cabins, and cottages. Waterpark tickets are sold separately from campground stays. Whispering Oaks RV Park and Iron Horse RV Resort also book directly through their own offices.
For a public option, Stephen F. Austin State Park to the northeast books through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system. Campsites can be reserved up to five months in advance, and sites fill quickly on peak spring and fall weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Most named RV parks in the area offer full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, pull-through and back-in sites, laundry, showers, and a camp store. Splashway Water Park and RV also has cabins and tent options. Cell coverage along the I-10 corridor is generally solid, and long-term guests at Colorado River RV Campground commonly rely on their own hotspots rather than park Wi-Fi.
Expect deer, armadillos, fire ants, and mosquitoes, especially near the river. Pack insect repellent and a rain plan.
Burn bans are issued periodically by Colorado County; when a ban is active, campfires and open flames are prohibited even in designated fire rings, so check with the campground office at check-in.

Texas does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers essentially every RV on RVezy. You'll need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's nothing to print or mail. Visiting from outside the US? Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage end at the US border. If you want to cross into another US state, confirm with your host during booking, since some have travel-region preferences. For a 500-mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $175 to $215 in fuel. Fuel up in Columbus rather than at highway-exit travel centers, prices there are usually 10 to 20 cents cheaper per gallon.

Austin State Park, Brazos Bend, and Lake Somerville all use the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, which opens bookings five months in advance to the day, and prime spring weekends fill quickly. Private parks near Columbus are more flexible but still tighten up around Texas Independence Day weekend and spring break. Interstate 10 runs right through town with wide lanes, generous shoulders, and gentle terrain, no mountain grades, no tight switchbacks. Pro tip: avoid driving through downtown Houston on I-10 during weekday rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m.), loop south on Beltway 8 instead for a much calmer RV experience.
