Campgrounds near Hilltop Lakes
Hilltop Lakes sits in east-central Texas between Normangee and Buffalo, roughly 38 miles north of College Station and about halfway between Houston and Dallas along the I-45 corridor. The area is a wooded resort community built around five small lakes, with a scattering of private RV parks in the surrounding Leon, Robertson, and Madison County countryside. Terrain is gently rolling, with pines and oaks, and elevation stays under 500 feet.
RV travelers generally choose between two options: full-hookup sites inside the resort at Hilltop Lakes Indian Wood Campground, or independent RV parks in the small towns nearby. 3 Cedar Crossing Campground and RV Park, Country Comfort RV Park of Marquez, Yellow Rose RV Park, and Franklin Oasis RV Park all lie within an easy drive and cater to travelers passing through on US-79 or I-45.
For tent camping or a state-park experience, Fort Boggy State Park near Centerville is the closest public land, offering primitive hike-in sites, cabins, and a 15-acre lake.
Things to do near Hilltop Lakes
The main draw inside the gated Hilltop Lakes community is on-site recreation. Guests staying at Hilltop Lakes Indian Wood Campground can reach an 18-hole golf course, a 9-hole disc golf course, tennis courts, a Texas-shaped swimming pool, equestrian stables, and fishing on five lakes (Cherokee, Tonkawa, Swan, Mirror, and Kickapoo) by golf cart. A restaurant, the Brandin Iron Cafe, sits inside the resort.
Off-property, Fort Boggy State Park offers 3.5 miles of hiking and mountain-bike trails, including the 1.5-mile Lake Trail and the two-mile Nature Trail, plus swimming and paddling on 15-acre Sullivan Lake, where anglers may catch largemouth bass, channel catfish, sunfish, or rainbow trout in season, and no fishing license is required inside the park. Lake Limestone, west of Hilltop Lakes, adds bass fishing and boat ramps, and College Station is close enough for a day trip to Texas A&M and the Bush Presidential Library.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Texas. March through May brings warm days, wildflowers along rural roads, and heavy rainfall, with May typically among the wettest months around College Station. October is often the single wettest month of the year, but daytime temperatures cool into the 80s and humidity drops, which is why Fort Boggy State Park often reaches capacity and highly recommends reservations for both camping and day use.
Summer is hot and humid. Daytime highs commonly reach the mid-90s from June through August, heat indices run higher, and afternoon thunderstorms are possible. Lake swimming, air-conditioned rigs, and shaded sites become priorities. Burn bans are frequent in Leon and Robertson Counties during dry stretches, so campfire plans should be confirmed at check-in.
Winters are mild but variable. Overnight lows sit around 40°F, freezes occur, and occasional cold fronts can drop temperatures sharply for a few days at a time.
How to book near Hilltop Lakes
Private RV parks near Hilltop Lakes take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites, and several also list on third-party booking platforms. Hilltop Lakes Indian Wood Campground is inside a private property owners' association, so guests are typically checked in at the Welcome Center about a half mile inside the main entrance off FM 3. Check-in is 3:00 p.m. and check-out is 2:00 p.m.
Fort Boggy State Park uses the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Campsites, cabins, and day passes can be booked online or by calling the TPWD customer service center. Cabins and busy weekends fill early in spring and fall, so booking several weeks ahead is advisable, and no-shows are cancelled after noon of the day after the scheduled arrival.
What to expect at Hilltop Lakes
Sites at Hilltop Lakes Indian Wood Campground are laid out on flat terrain with scattered trees and offer 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups. The campground has 35 RV spots, two of which are pull-through, plus ten tent sites, a playground, and a pavilion, along with a bathhouse with showers and a coin laundry. Vehicles up to 40 feet are accepted, and guests reach the main pool and restaurant by a short drive or golf cart ride.
Expect a quiet, community-oriented atmosphere rather than a resort-style RV park. It is very quiet after hours and security patrols come through the property, and Wi-Fi is unreliable according to camper reports. Independent parks along US-79 and I-45 tend to be smaller, gravel-pad operations aimed at overnight travelers, with fewer amenities but easier highway access.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hilltop Lakes, TX?

Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches run $250 to $400. Pro tip: filtering by travel trailers with delivery included can be cheaper than driving a motorhome yourself once you factor in fuel.

tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/fort-boggyCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Hilltop Lakes?
Yes, RV delivery in Hilltop Lakes is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're a first-timer. Many RVezy hosts in the Brazos Valley and Leon County area will tow the trailer to Hilltop Lakes Resort, Fort Boggy State Park, or a private lot, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on the search page to see which hosts offer this and their delivery rates (often based on mileage from their home base). Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if you're renting a fifth wheel or large travel trailer. You skip the towing learning curve and go straight to the campfire.

Fort Boggy State Park, just 15 minutes south near Centerville, has water and electric sites tucked into post-oak forest. About an hour away, Lake Somerville State Park (Birch Creek Unit) and Lake Livingston State Park both offer lakeside hookup sites perfect for swimming and fishing. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/fort-boggyWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Hilltop Lakes?
The sweet spot for an RV trip in Hilltop Lakes is mid-March through May and again from late September through November, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 82 degree range and humidity drops. Summers in this part of East Texas are hot and muggy with highs regularly in the mid-90s, so plan early morning drives and book a rig with strong air conditioning if you're traveling June through August. Winters are mild (50s and 60s most days), which makes Hilltop Lakes a great snowbird-friendly destination compared to northern states. Pro tip: October weekends often line up with Texas A&M home games, so book your motorhome rental in Hilltop Lakes early if you're planning a tailgate trip.
weather.gov/hgx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Hilltop Lakes?
You'll do great, and Hilltop Lakes is honestly one of the gentlest places in Texas to learn. The roads are quiet, flat, and traffic is minimal once you leave I-45 or Highway 75. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering how to drive, level, hook up, and dump the rig, and you can text them throughout your trip with questions. If city driving makes you nervous, ask the host to deliver to your campsite instead. Pro tip: spend your first night at Hilltop Lakes Resort or Fort Boggy State Park to get comfortable with the systems before venturing out. First time renting an RV always feels easier after one calm evening at camp.
txdot.gov/safety.htmlWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Hilltop Lakes trip?
You're covered: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're at Hilltop Lakes Resort or out near Lake Limestone. Roadside assistance handles common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also a great first resource for quirks specific to their RV, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you pull out of the driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's tire size and VIN so you can rattle off details quickly if you ever need a service call out on the rural Leon County highways.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hilltop Lakes RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Great news for road-trippers: most RVezy hosts in Hilltop Lakes allow interstate travel, so you can roll into Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, or New Mexico without issue. Just confirm the host's travel area on the listing or send a quick message before booking. Travel into Mexico, however, is not allowed on any RVezy rental because the protection package and roadside assistance don't extend across the border. Popular cross-state runs from Hilltop Lakes include New Orleans (about 6 hours east), Hot Springs, Arkansas (about 7 hours north), and Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico (about 11 hours west). Pro tip: for longer interstate hauls, filter for listings with unlimited mileage to keep your fuel-and-miles math simple.
txdot.gov/How much should I budget for fuel on a Hilltop Lakes RV trip?
Texas has some of the cheapest gas in the country, which makes your RV rental in Hilltop Lakes more affordable than the same trip would be in California or the Northeast. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A, 10 to 14 for a Class C, and 16 to 22 if you're towing a travel trailer with your own vehicle. With diesel and regular fuel typically in the $2.80 to $3.30 range around Leon County, a 300-mile weekend in a Class C usually costs $70 to $100 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Madisonville or Buffalo right off I-45, where prices tend to be lower than at the small stations along the back roads near Hilltop Lakes.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hilltop Lakes?
For the best sites, book your campground as soon as your RV rental in Hilltop Lakes is confirmed. Texas state parks like Fort Boggy and Lake Somerville open reservations five months ahead through the Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) online system, and spring and fall weekends fill fast. Hilltop Lakes Resort RV sites can typically be booked a few weeks out, but holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) sell out earlier. Private parks like Wolf Creek often have more last-minute availability. Pro tip: set a reminder for exactly five months before your target date at 8 a.m. Central to snag prime waterfront sites at Lake Somerville. They disappear within minutes for spring weekends.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/reservationsWhat are local driving conditions like around Hilltop Lakes?
You'll find some of the easiest RV driving in Texas right here. The terrain around Hilltop Lakes is gently rolling post-oak savanna with no mountain passes, narrow canyons, or tight switchbacks to worry about. Highway 75 and FM 3 (the main routes into the resort) are wide, two-lane country roads with light traffic. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk, and slow down in afternoon thunderstorms during spring, when roads can flood briefly. The nearest interstate, I-45, is about 20 minutes east and is a smooth straight shot if you're heading to Houston or Dallas. Pro tip: avoid driving into downtown Houston or Austin in a large motorhome at rush hour. Park at a suburban campground and rideshare in instead.

Lake Somerville and Lake Livingston state parks both offer full hookup pull-throughs at their premium loops. Dump stations are also available at Buc-ee's in Madisonville and several private RV parks along I-45. Pro tip: ask your host if the rig has a 30-to-50 amp adapter (or vice versa) so you can confidently plug in at any pedestal on your Hilltop Lakes RV trip.

Larger family rigs sleep six to eight with bunk beds, and most travel trailers include awnings perfect for shady afternoons by the lake. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hilltop%20Lakes%2C%20TexasHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Booking is straightforward and secure. When you reserve your RV rental in Hilltop Lakes, you pay through RVezy's protected checkout (not directly to the host), with a portion charged at booking and the balance due before your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is held on your card a few days before pickup and released after the trip, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. The deposit amount varies by rig and is clearly shown on each listing before you book. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off. It's the single best way to keep your deposit return smooth and stress-free after your Hilltop Lakes adventure.
