Karnes City camping overview
Karnes City sits in the South Texas Plains, roughly 54 miles southeast of San Antonio along U.S. 181 and about 37 miles north of Beeville. The town is the seat of Karnes County and runs on Central Time, with mild winters and long, hot summers shaping when RV travelers arrive.
Most overnight options near Karnes City are privately operated full-hookup RV parks rather than public campgrounds. Pecan Grove RV Resort and Quail Ridge RV Park sit close to town, while Kenedy Texas Country RV Park and Ranch is a short drive southeast in neighboring Kenedy. Texas Starr RV Park and Creekside RV Park round out the cluster, giving RV renters several level, hookup-equipped choices for short stays or longer base camps.
For a state-park experience, Choke Canyon State Park is a 26,000-acre South Texas retreat located on the shores of Choke Canyon Reservoir, about an hour south near Three Rivers, and is the closest Texas Parks and Wildlife campground to Karnes City with electric and water sites.
Things to do near Karnes City
Day trips from a Karnes City base camp tend to mix small-town history, ranch country, and water recreation. The Karnes County Courthouse anchors downtown, and the historic district of Helena, the original county seat, preserves the Old 1873 Helena Courthouse and the John Ruckman House. Panna Maria, just north on FM 81, is the oldest permanent Polish settlement in the United States and home to the Polish Heritage Center.
Outdoor recreation centers on Choke Canyon State Park to the south, where visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, kayaking, hiking, biking, swimming, and the nature center, and watch for alligators and deer along the brushland shoreline. San Antonio is about an hour northwest for the River Walk and the Alamo, making it an easy day trip from any of the local RV parks.

Karnes City has a long shoulder-and-peak RV season because winters are short and mild. Spring, summer, and fall are the busy stretch at Choke Canyon State Park, with reservations highly recommended during the busy spring, summer, and fall months. Daytime highs in March through May typically sit in the upper 70s to upper 80s Fahrenheit, making spring the most comfortable window for hiking, fishing, and sightseeing before the heat builds.
Summer is hot and humid. August is the warmest month with an average high near 97°F and average low in the mid-70s, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Many RVers rely on full hookups for continuous air conditioning during this stretch. Spring and fall bring the wettest stretches, with tropical moisture from the Gulf occasionally producing heavy rain in September.

How to book campgrounds near Karnes City
Private RV parks around Karnes City, including Pecan Grove RV Resort, Kenedy Texas Country RV Park and Ranch, Quail Ridge RV Park, Texas Starr RV Park, and Creekside RV Park, generally take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Many cater to oilfield and Winter Texan traffic, so weeknight availability can tighten unexpectedly, and calling ahead is the most reliable approach.
For Choke Canyon State Park, camping is booked through the Texas State Parks reservation system operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife. Campsites and cabins can be reserved up to 5 months in advance, and the park often reaches capacity on weekends. Daily entrance passes are available 1 month in advance and are recommended to guarantee gate access.
What to expect
Expect a small-town pace and flat to gently rolling brush country. Private RV parks near Karnes City are typically open year-round with full hookups, level gravel or concrete pads, and pull-through options that suit larger Class A and fifth-wheel rentals. Amenities lean practical rather than resort-style, though some parks add laundry, Wi-Fi, and ranch settings.
Cell coverage is generally solid in town and along U.S. 181 but can thin out on backroads toward Panna Maria and Helena. Grocery and fuel are easy to find in Karnes City and Kenedy. At Choke Canyon State Park, expect thorny brushland vegetation, posted alligator-safety signage because spring and summer is breeding season for alligators, with caution advised along the shoreline, and gate hours of 6am to 10pm, with day facilities vacated by 10pm.

weather.gov/crp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Karnes City?
You're going to do great. Karnes City is actually one of the friendlier places in Texas to learn the RV ropes, thanks to wide rural highways, light traffic, and flat-to-gently-rolling terrain. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, leveling, hookups, the generator, and the waste system before you ever pull away. If you're nervous, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or a campervan rental Karnes City listing, both easier to handle than a 35-foot Class A. You can also message your host with questions anytime through the platform. Pro tip: practice a few turns and backups in an empty parking lot off US-181 before heading out to your campsite.

Tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave the pickup location, and snap a photo of the generator and breaker panel locations during your walkthrough.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best RV road trips from Karnes City?
Karnes City is an ideal jumping-off point for a Texas RV road trip from Karnes City. Head 60 miles northwest to San Antonio for the River Walk and the Alamo, or roll 90 miles southeast to Corpus Christi and Padre Island National Seashore for beachfront camping. Goliad and its Spanish missions are about an hour east, and the Texas Hill Country wineries around Fredericksburg are a scenic 2.5-hour drive northwest. For a bigger adventure, Big Bend National Park sits roughly 8 hours west, perfect for a week-long loop. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals, but every direction inside Texas is fair game. Pro tip: avoid I-410 around San Antonio at rush hour by routing through US-181 to Loop 1604.

Fuel is one of the easiest things to budget for when you rent an RV in Karnes City. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg), and campervans can stretch to 15 to 18 mpg. Texas gas prices tend to run below the national average, often $2.80 to $3.20 per gallon, and Karnes County has plenty of stations along US-181 and SH-72. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Kenedy or Karnes City before heading to remote spots like Choke Canyon, where stations are sparser and prices climb.

Private RV parks like Falls City RV Park and Escondido Resort are usually easier to grab on shorter notice, often within a week or two. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Thanksgiving) require the most lead time. Pro tip: reserve your state park site first, then book your RV rental in Karnes City around those dates. You can always message hosts on RVezy to confirm pickup timing once your campsite is locked in.

The main routes (US-181, US-72, and FM 81) are well-maintained two- to four-lane highways with wide shoulders and gentle terrain. Watch for oilfield trucks during weekday mornings, since Karnes County sits in the active Eagle Ford Shale, and keep an eye out for deer at dawn and dusk, especially on rural FM roads. Sudden Gulf-fed thunderstorms can roll in fast from May through September, so check the forecast before heading out. Pro tip: when driving an RV through nearby San Antonio, stick to outer loops like Loop 1604 rather than the downtown I-35 corridor where low clearances and tight ramps make things tricky.

Payment for your Karnes City RV rental is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, with no cash or off-platform transactions needed. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV. As long as you return the rig in the same condition it left, the hold is released after the trip ends. To avoid any hiccups, do a thorough walkaround photo session with your host at pickup and drop-off. Tip: keep receipts for propane and fuel refills since most Karnes City hosts ask you to return the RV with the same levels you got it.
