Campgrounds near Kenedy, Texas
Kenedy sits in Karnes County on the South Texas coastal plains, roughly an hour southeast of San Antonio along US Highway 181. The town serves as a practical stopover for RVers moving between San Antonio and the Gulf Coast, with several private RV parks inside city limits and state park camping within an hour's drive.
Close-in options like Pecan Grove RV Resort and Kenedy Texas Country RV Park and Ranch cater primarily to RV travelers with full hookups and long-term stays. Texas Starr RV Park, Hackberry Creek RV Park, and Quail Ridge RV Park round out the local choices, all within a short drive of grocery stores, fuel, and highway access.
For state park camping, Goliad State Park offers several distinct camping areas including Jacales, Karankawa, Longhorn, and Vaquero, providing a mix of developed tent sites, RV hookups, and small cabins for rent along the San Antonio River. Choke Canyon State Park sits about 45 miles west near Calliham and provides lakeside camping with both primitive and developed sites.
Things to do around Kenedy
History drives many trips to this corner of Texas. Native Americans, Spanish explorers and missionaries, Texian soldiers, and early settlers walked the land of what is now Goliad State Park and Historic Site. Visitors can explore historic sites in the park and nearby, hike and bike the trails, camp, picnic, or fish and paddle the San Antonio River. The park sits along a multi-mile paddling trail on the San Antonio River.
Water recreation centers on Choke Canyon Reservoir to the west. Anglers pursue largemouth bass and catfish from boat or shore, both units have boat ramps, and the Calliham unit offers fish cleaning shelters and a bait shop.
Birding is a draw across the region. Choke Canyon is a stopover for migrating birds, with everything from water birds to songbirds along the park's birding trail. At Goliad, bird blinds and nearby loops of the Great Texas Birding Trail add more viewing spots.

South Texas has a long warm season and a short, mild winter. In Karnes City, the summers are hot and oppressive, the winters are short, cool, and windy, and it is partly cloudy year round. Summer highs regularly climb into the mid-90s from June through September, so plan for early-morning and evening activity in July and August, and expect afternoon shade to become a valuable site attribute.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel. The best time of year to visit the area is February to April and mid October to December mid. Wildflowers, cooler mornings, and lower humidity make March through May and October through November the peak reservation windows at state parks.
Rainfall is uneven across the year. Karnes City averages around 33 inches of precipitation per year, with the wettest month usually May. Early fall also brings meaningful rainfall, when tropical systems in the western Gulf can push heavy rain inland from late summer through October, so monitor forecasts before booking a river-adjacent site.
Booking and reservation tips
State park sites at Goliad and Choke Canyon are booked through the Texas State Parks reservation system, operated by ReserveAmerica. Most overnight camping or lodging reservations may be reserved up to five months in advance. Reserve online or by phone at (512) 389-8900, and note that parks often reach capacity, so reservations are highly recommended for both camping and day use.
Private parks in and around Kenedy, including Pecan Grove RV Resort, Kenedy Texas Country RV Park and Ranch, Texas Starr RV Park, Hackberry Creek RV Park, and Quail Ridge RV Park, take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. Weekend and holiday stays in spring and fall fill fastest, so book several weeks ahead when possible.
If you do not check in at the park by noon of the day after your scheduled arrival date, Texas State Parks will cancel the rest of your reservation, so call the park to avoid cancellation if a late arrival is expected.
What to expect on site
Local RV parks around Kenedy tend to be practical rather than resort-style. Expect concrete or gravel pads, 30 and 50 amp service, water and sewer hookups, and quiet residential surroundings. Some parks host long-term guests tied to regional energy work, so short-stay travelers should confirm nightly availability before arrival.
At Texas State Parks, sites vary widely by loop. The Karankawa camping area at Goliad sits toward the front of the park near the Mission, with pull-through sites that have enough space to accommodate most large RVs and motorhomes, while Jacales and the tent loops offer more primitive setups. Many RV sites in the region offer minimal separation between neighbors, though spaciousness often compensates for limited visual barriers.
At Choke Canyon, wildlife awareness matters. Alligators are present around the shoreline, so use caution near the water. Keep pets leashed, children supervised, and food secured overnight.

Pro tip: Karnes County hunting season (November through January) and Eagle Ford energy traffic make weekends busy, book your RV rental Texas-style at least 4 to 6 weeks out for prime fall dates.
weather.gov/crp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Kenedy?
You are going to do great, Kenedy is one of the easiest places in Texas to learn. Roads like US-181, US-87, and SH-72 are wide, flat, and lightly trafficked compared to San Antonio or Houston. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, slide-outs, and the dump valves, so you are never figuring it out alone. If you are nervous about size, start with a Class B campervan rental in Kenedy or a smaller travel trailer under 24 feet. First time renting an RV? Take 15 minutes in an empty parking lot to practice turns and backing before hitting the highway. Pro tip: message the host with your route, locals know which back roads to avoid during oilfield shift changes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown on my Kenedy RV trip?
You are covered, every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are parked in downtown Kenedy or out near Choke Canyon. Your host is also a direct message away through the RVezy app for any RV-specific questions like a stuck slide-out or water pump quirk, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: South Texas cell service is solid on US-181 and I-37 but can get patchy on ranch roads, save the roadside number in your contacts and screenshot your booking before heading out.

Popular interstate trips from Kenedy include Big Bend National Park (about 480 miles west), New Orleans (about 560 miles east), and Carlsbad Caverns (about 530 miles northwest). One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because the protection plan and roadside assistance do not extend across the border. The good news is South Texas has plenty of incredible coastline, the Rio Grande Valley birding trails and South Padre Island are just a few hours south. Pro tip: if you are heading to Big Bend, fuel up well in advance, gas stations thin out fast west of Del Rio.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on my Kenedy RV trip?

Plan on roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 14 to 18 MPG for a campervan, and 12 to 16 MPG for a truck-and-travel-trailer combo. A typical 300-mile weekend loop to San Antonio and back runs roughly $90 to $130 in fuel for most rigs depending on current prices. Pro tip: fill up at large highway stations with RV-friendly lanes so you are not navigating tight pumps in town.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Kenedy?
Easy answer: Texas State Parks open reservations five months ahead of your arrival date, and that is the sweet spot for booking Goliad State Park or Choke Canyon. For peak weekends (spring break, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year, and most October and November weekends), book the moment that 5-month window opens, popular riverfront sites at Goliad can disappear within hours. Private parks in Kenedy itself are more flexible, often bookable 1 to 2 weeks ahead even in season. Use the official Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system to lock in dates. Pro tip: midweek stays (Sunday through Thursday) are easy to grab even last-minute, and pair perfectly with a quick RV delivery in Kenedy from your RVezy host.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Kenedy, TX?
Driving in and around Kenedy is refreshingly straightforward: flat Gulf Coastal Plains terrain, wide rural highways, and very little of the congestion you would hit near Austin or San Antonio. US-181, US-87, and SH-72 are the main arteries and easily handle any size rig. Two things to watch: oilfield truck traffic in the Eagle Ford Shale region (mostly weekday shift-change hours around 6am and 6pm), and sudden spring thunderstorms that can bring brief but heavy rain. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on county roads. Pro tip: avoid driving large motorhomes through downtown San Antonio at rush hour, take Loop 1604 around the city, it adds a few minutes but saves a lot of stress.

Goliad State Park has 30/50-amp electric and water at most sites with a central dump station, and Choke Canyon State Park provides full hookups at its Calliham unit. Every state park has potable water fill stations, and travel centers in nearby Three Rivers offer public dump and freshwater fill for a small fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading to any state park, sites are spacious but water spigots can be a long hose-run away.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/choke-canyonWhat's included inside the RV I'm renting in Kenedy?

Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor shower, awning, and an onboard generator for boondocking on hunting leases. Each listing on RVezy shows the full amenity list, sleeping capacity, and any included extras like camp chairs, bedding, or kitchen kits. Pro tip: for South Texas heat, prioritize rigs with dual A/C units or a strong 15,000 BTU unit, your afternoon naps will thank you when it hits triple digits.

Mileage policies vary by listing, with included miles per night and a per-mile rate after that shown clearly at booking. Pro tip: if you are an Eagle Ford worker or hunter staying put, ask about weekly or monthly rates, many hosts offer meaningful discounts for longer Kenedy bookings.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kenedy,TexasHow does the security deposit and payment work for an RV rental in Kenedy?
Payment is simple and secure: RVezy charges your card directly through the platform when you book, so there is no cash, no third-party apps, and no awkward exchanges with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, and it is released back to you after the trip wraps up clean with no damage or excess mileage. To avoid issues, do a quick walk-around video at pickup with the host, return the RV at the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks before drop-off (or pay the dump fee). Pro tip: keep your dump-station receipts as proof, it helps hosts release deposits faster.

The easiest overnight stays are at full-hookup private parks within city limits along US-181, with rates that are friendly for longer stays. For longer stays, Goliad State Park (about 25 miles) and Choke Canyon State Park (about 45 miles) are excellent. Free street parking in residential Kenedy is generally not allowed overnight.
