Camping near Lamar, Texas
Lamar sits on a small peninsula between St. Charles Bay and Aransas Bay on the Texas Coastal Bend, just across the Copano Bay Causeway from Rockport and Fulton. The area is best known for Goose Island State Park, a 321.4-acre state park in Aransas County located north of Rockport and surrounded by both St. Charles and Aransas Bays. The park is also home to the Big Tree, a southern live oak thought to be over 1,000 years old, with a 35-foot circumference, a height of 44 feet, and a crown spread of 90 feet.
RV travelers have two main lanes: state-park camping inside Goose Island, or private RV parks concentrated along Highway 35 and on the Lamar Peninsula itself. Nearby options include Hidden Oaks RV Resort on the peninsula, Bahia Vista Waterfront RV Park and Bay View RV Resort along the coast, and the Wooded Area and Lantana Loop sites inside Goose Island State Park.
The location works well as a base for fishing, birding, and day trips to Rockport Beach, Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, Port Aransas, and Corpus Christi. Swimming is not practical directly at Goose Island; the park has no beach or swimming area, the shoreline is oyster shell and concrete bulkhead, and the nearest beach is about nine miles away at Rockport.
Things to do around Lamar
Fishing drives most trips. Goose Island has a 1,620-foot fishing pier, a boat launch and a kayak/canoe launch, plus a fish cleaning station, and no fishing license is required to fish from shore or pier in a Texas state park. Common catches include redfish, speckled trout, and black drum, with flounder and sheepshead also in St. Charles Bay.
Birding is the other headline activity. The Lamar area sits on the Central Flyway, and the wintering grounds for endangered whooping cranes at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge lie directly across St. Charles Bay from the park. Park programs include nature hikes, birding tours, and kids programs listed on the events page.
Off the water, families can visit the Big Tree, Fulton Mansion State Historic Site, the Texas Maritime Museum in Rockport, and Rockport Beach Park for calm, shallow swimming.

The Coastal Bend has a long, hot, humid summer and a short, mild winter. August is the hottest month, with an average temperature of about 28.7°C or 83.6°F, and most RV travelers target the shoulder seasons. October through April is the sweet spot for comfortable temperatures, and wildflowers fill the park in spring.
Winter is the Winter Texan season. Snowbirds fill many private RV parks on monthly leases from roughly November through March, so nightly availability tightens even though the weather is cool rather than cold. The first freeze at Goose Island typically occurs in mid-December and the last freeze in early February.
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in August and September. This overlaps with the wettest months of the year: TPWD notes the wettest months are August, September, and October. Coastal Bend parks have closed or sustained damage after major storms in the past, so trip insurance and a flexible booking are worth considering for late-summer and early-fall stays.

How to book campgrounds near Lamar
Goose Island State Park reservations are handled through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reservation system, online or by phone through the customer service center. Reservations can be made for today and up to five months in advance for standard water-and-electric campsites, and a 14-day maximum stay with a 7-day-out rule is in effect for all reservable sites. Full hookup sites are not reservable in advance; call the park to check availability for walk-up sites.
Private parks in the Lamar and Rockport area, including Hidden Oaks RV Resort, Bahia Vista Waterfront RV Park, and Bay View RV Resort, book directly through the property or through third-party marketplaces. Weekly and monthly rates are common, especially during Winter Texan months, so weekend-only availability can be limited from December through March.
What to expect on the ground
Goose Island offers 44 bayfront campsites and 57 sites nestled under oak trees, all with water and electricity, every camping loop has restrooms with showers, and there are also 25 walk-in tent sites without electricity plus a group camp for youth groups. The Wooded Area sits under mature live oaks and is more sheltered, while the bayfront loop is open and breezy.
The gate is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and campers arriving after 10 p.m. should contact Park Headquarters before 1 p.m. that day. All late arrivals must report to Park Headquarters by 9 a.m. the next morning to complete check-in.
Pack for humidity, sun, and coastal insects. Bring bug spray and drinking water, since water conservation alerts urge visitors to bring their own drinking water or buy bottled water at headquarters, and expect regular airboat traffic in the park.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Lamar, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lamar, TX?
RV rental in Lamar, TX is one of the more affordable ways to enjoy the Texas Coastal Bend. Travel trailers typically run about $95 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes average $185 to $295, and larger Class A motorhomes sit around $250 to $400 per night. Spring break, summer weekends, and the fall Whooping Crane Festival in nearby Rockport are peak times, so booking 60+ days out locks in better rates. Want a cheap RV rental in Lamar option? Filter for travel trailers with delivery to Goose Island State Park, skip a tow vehicle, and split the nightly rate across the family. Midweek stays often save 15 to 25 percent.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lamar,TexasWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Lamar, TX?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lamar, TX. Texas does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers on RVezy, since they all fall under non-commercial weight limits. Approved renters are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the booking platform, so there are no extra trips to a DMV. Visiting from outside the United States? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto club before you fly in and pair it with your home license. That's it, you're ready to roll toward Aransas Bay.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and protection included in Lamar, TX?
Yes, every RV rental in Lamar, TX booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right into your reservation. The protection plan covers most damage to the RV during your trip, so you can focus on fishing Copano Bay or birding at Goose Island State Park instead of worrying about pebble dings on Highway 35. During checkout you choose the protection tier that fits your comfort level, with higher tiers lowering your out-of-pocket responsibility if something happens. Hosts don't pick this for you, you do, so you're always in control of your coverage.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my Lamar, TX RV trip changes?
Booking your Lamar RV trip is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy platform-wide, not the host. There is a grace period right after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and after that, refunds depend on how far out your trip is. The Texas coast does see occasional tropical weather between June and November, and RVezy's support team works with you when nature gets in the way. Because the policy is handled platform-wide, you won't see it attached to individual listings. If plans shift, contact RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Lamar, TX?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Lamar TX options are easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who happily welcome dogs. Once you're here, your pup will love it: Goose Island State Park allows leashed pets on all trails and at the famous Big Tree, Rockport Beach has a designated leash-on dog area, and the Lamar Peninsula's quiet shell roads are perfect for sunset walks. Bring a six-foot leash (required in all Texas state parks), proof of rabies vaccination, and plenty of fresh water since coastal humidity climbs fast. Pro tip: message the host before booking if you have more than one pet or a large breed to confirm any small cleaning fee.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/pets-in-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Lamar, TX?
Yes, RV delivery Lamar TX is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow the RV directly to Goose Island State Park, Copano Bay RV Resort, or even a private fishing camp on St. Charles Bay, then level it, hook up water, sewer, and 30/50-amp power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means you skip towing on Highway 35 entirely and arrive to a campsite that's ready for coffee and a sunset. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, with most Lamar-area drops running $75 to $200 round trip. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer it.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/goose-islandHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Lamar, TX?
Plenty far, because most Lamar RV rentals come with a generous daily mileage allowance, typically 100 to 150 free miles per day, and some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. That's more than enough to explore the Coastal Bend: Corpus Christi is about 45 miles south, Padre Island National Seashore is roughly 65 miles, Port Aransas is 35 miles via the free Aransas Pass ferry, and San Antonio sits about 175 miles inland. Planning a bigger Lamar RV trip up to Houston (200 miles) or Big Bend National Park (550 miles)? Message the host before booking to add a mileage package, which is almost always cheaper than per-mile overage fees.
txdot.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Lamar, TX?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Lamar TX. Goose Island State Park, right on the Lamar Peninsula, has 102 sites with water and electric, beachfront bayside camping, and access to the 1,000-year-old Big Tree. Copano Bay RV Resort offers full hookups and a fishing pier on the bay. Sandollar Resort & RV Park in nearby Rockport has waterfront sites and a heated pool. Beacon RV Park & Marina puts you on a 550-foot lighted fishing pier on Aransas Bay. Wilderness Oaks RV Resort gives you full hookups under live oak canopy just minutes away. Book Goose Island 4 to 5 months ahead through Texas State Parks reservations, especially October through April.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/goose-islandWhen is the best time to take an RV trip to Lamar, TX?
The sweet spot for RV camping Lamar TX is October through April, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 78°F range and humidity drops dramatically. This is also peak Whooping Crane season at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, with the endangered birds arriving from Canada around mid-November and staying through March. Spring (March to early May) brings wildflowers and excellent fishing for redfish and speckled trout. Summer is warm and humid with highs around 90°F, great for beach days but plan to use the RV's AC heavily. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, so keep an eye on Gulf forecasts. Locals will tell you February sunsets on Copano Bay are unbeatable.
weather.gov/crp/I'm first time renting an RV. Will I be okay in Lamar, TX?
You're going to do great, and Lamar is actually one of the easiest spots in Texas for first-time renters. Highway 35 is flat, wide, and well-maintained, with no mountain passes or tight switchbacks to worry about. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, showing you how to operate the generator, awning, slide-outs, water tanks, and propane, and they hand you a written cheat sheet. If you'd rather skip driving altogether, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. You can also message your host any time during the trip, and RVezy's 24/7 support line is one tap away. Take a slow practice loop around the Lamar Peninsula's quiet shell roads before heading out.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws.htmlWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Lamar, TX RV trip?
You're covered. Every motorhome rental in Lamar booked through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're on Highway 35, parked at Goose Island State Park, or out near the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. The roadside team handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Cell coverage is strong throughout the Lamar Peninsula and Rockport-Fulton area on all major carriers. Your host is also a quick message away for questions about quirks specific to their RV. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV's VIN.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lamar, TX RV rental to Mexico or out of state?
Cross-state travel is wide open. You can take your RV rental in Lamar, TX into Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, or Arkansas. Popular routes include an RV road trip from Lamar east to New Orleans (about 480 miles) or west to Big Bend National Park (around 550 miles). Mexico, however, is off-limits on every RVezy rental because insurance and protection coverage do not extend across the border, so plan to leave the RV in Texas if you want to visit Mexico for the day. For any multi-state itinerary, give your host a heads up when booking so they can adjust the mileage allowance. Galveston, Austin, and San Antonio are all easy weekend loops.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Lamar, TX RV trip?
Fuel is one of the friendlier line items on a Texas Coastal Bend trip because Texas consistently has some of the lowest gas prices in the country, typically running 30 to 50 cents below the national average. Expect 7 to 10 miles per gallon for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 mpg for Class C, 14 to 18 mpg for travel trailers being towed, and 18 to 22 mpg for Class B campervans. A weeklong loop covering Lamar, Corpus Christi, Padre Island, and back (around 250 miles total) usually runs $90 to $180 in fuel. Fill up in Rockport or Aransas Pass before heading to the Lamar Peninsula, where stations are limited. Buc-ee's in Sinton is a fun fuel stop.
comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/fuels/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lamar, TX?
For Goose Island State Park, book 4 to 5 months ahead through the official Texas State Parks reservation system, especially for October through April when winter Texans and birders fill the bayfront sites. Private parks like Sandollar Resort, Copano Bay RV Resort, and Beacon RV Park & Marina usually need 2 to 3 months of lead time for holiday weekends and 2 to 4 weeks for regular dates. The Texas State Parks system opens reservations exactly 5 months out at 8 a.m. Central, so set a calendar reminder. Pro tip: if Goose Island is full, check for cancellations every Monday morning, sites open up constantly thanks to the 48-hour cancellation window.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around Lamar, TX?
Driving around Lamar is refreshingly easy. The terrain is flat, sea-level coastal plain, and the main artery, State Highway 35, is a smooth two-to-four-lane road with wide shoulders and plenty of pull-offs. Watch for the LBJ Causeway between Lamar and Rockport, it's a 1.5-mile bridge over Copano Bay with stunning views and steady crosswinds, so reduce speed in a tall motorhome. Hurricane season (June through November) can bring sudden squalls, and morning fog is common in winter near the bays. Speed limits drop to 30 mph through the small communities of Lamar and Fulton, and watch for whitetail deer at dawn and dusk on Park Road 13 near Goose Island. No tolls anywhere in the area.
txdot.gov/safety.htmlWhat amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Lamar, TX?
Coastal Bend campgrounds are well equipped. Goose Island State Park offers 30/50-amp electric, water hookups, a dump station, modern restrooms with hot showers, a fish-cleaning station, and a bayside fishing pier. Most private parks like Sandollar Resort, Beacon RV Park & Marina, and Wilderness Oaks RV Resort have full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp), Wi-Fi, laundry, pools, and often a marina or boat launch. You can dump tanks for free at Goose Island if you camped there, or pay $5 to $10 at most private parks. Fill fresh water at any campground spigot, the local water is treated city supply and safe to drink. Cell signal is strong throughout the peninsula on AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/goose-island/fees-facilitiesWhat's inside the RVs I can rent in Lamar, TX?
Lamar RV rentals are road-trip ready. Expect a queen or king bed in the master, plus bunk beds or convertible dinettes that bring sleeping capacity to 4 to 8 people. Kitchens include a three-burner propane stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink with hot water. Bathrooms have a shower, toilet, and vanity, even in many travel trailers. Most RVs come with rooftop air conditioning (critical for Gulf Coast humidity), a propane furnace for cool winter nights, and DOT-approved seatbelts for every passenger. Many hosts include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, and onboard generator or solar setup. Wi-Fi varies, but coastal cell signal is strong enough that a phone hotspot works almost everywhere on the Lamar Peninsula.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and options can I get with a Lamar, TX RV rental?
Hosts in the Lamar area offer some genuinely useful add-ons. Popular ones include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), fully stocked kitchen kits ($25 to $50), generators for boondocking ($15 to $25 per day), bikes, kayaks (perfect for Copano Bay), portable propane fire pits (great since Aransas County sometimes has burn bans), and beach chair/umbrella bundles. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Lamar, Rockport, or Fulton, or you can add delivery to your campground for a flat fee. Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per day to unlimited on longer rentals. Pro tip: ask your host to pre-stock the propane tanks and fresh water, it saves you a stop on day one.
tdlr.texas.gov/How does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Lamar, TX?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your campervan or motorhome rental in Lamar on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit card, never directly to the host, so your transaction is protected end-to-end. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any issues, do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, respect the mileage and generator-hour limits, and return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels. Easy peasy, beach to bank.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Lamar, TX?
An RV road trip from Lamar opens up the whole Texas Gulf Coast and Hill Country. Top picks: Padre Island National Seashore (65 miles south) for 70 miles of undeveloped beach driving and sea turtle releases, Port Aransas (35 miles via the free ferry from Aransas Pass) for fishing and beach bars, Corpus Christi (45 miles) for the USS Lexington and Texas State Aquarium, San Antonio (175 miles) for the River Walk and Alamo, and Galveston (220 miles) for historic mansions and Moody Gardens. Want something quiet? Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is just 25 miles away and home to the wintering Whooping Cranes. A 7-day loop through all five is the classic family RV trip Lamar locals recommend.
