Campgrounds near Lexington, Texas
Lexington sits in Lee County, Texas, at the intersection of ranchland and the Post Oak Savannah, roughly an hour northeast of Austin and about 20 minutes north of Giddings on U.S. Highway 77. The town itself is small, so most RV travelers use it as a quiet base for exploring the surrounding lakes, state parks, and Central Texas towns.
Close-in options include Elm Creek RV Park and Shady Grove RV Park for basic full-hookup stays. Giddings RV Park and Rockdale RV Park extend the range south and north along Highway 77, both useful for travelers passing through or looking for a longer stopover with access to small-town amenities. Star Ranch Nudist Resort operates as an adults-only clothing-optional property for renters seeking that specific experience.
Larger public campgrounds sit within a one-hour drive: Lake Somerville State Park (Birch Creek and Nails Creek units) to the east, Bastrop State Park and Buescher State Park to the south, and Lake Bastrop parks operated by the LCRA along the Colorado River corridor.
Things to do around Lexington
Lake Somerville is the closest full-service outdoor destination, with shoreline fishing, swimming, and the Somerville Trailway connecting the Birch Creek and Nails Creek units through post oak woodland. Bastrop State Park and the surrounding Lost Pines forest offer hiking, swimming, and a scenic drive on Park Road 1C over to Buescher State Park.
Family day trips within about an hour include the Blue Bell Creameries tour in Brenham, the historic Round Top antiques district, and downtown Bastrop for shops and restaurants on the Colorado River. Austin sits roughly 60 miles southwest and gives RV renters an easy day for museums, greenbelt hikes, and food. The LCRA parks along Lake Bastrop add paddle sport rentals and swim beaches for warm-weather afternoons.

Central Texas summers are long, hot, and humid. From June through August daytime highs regularly push into the mid-90s Fahrenheit, and afternoon thunderstorms and heat advisories are common. RV renters should plan on shaded sites, 30- or 50-amp hookups for air conditioning, and early-morning activity windows. Wildfire risk climbs during dry stretches, and burn bans are common in Lee, Bastrop, and Fayette Counties.
Spring, roughly mid-March through May, is the prime window. Bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush peak along regional roadsides in April, and daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the 70s and 80s. May is typically the wettest month, so expect thunderstorm cells and the occasional severe weather day.
Fall, from mid-September into November, brings a second sweet spot with mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity. Winter is short and generally mild, but cold fronts can drop overnight lows below freezing, and occasional hard freezes have closed parks and utilities during past winter storms.
How to book campgrounds near Lexington
Private RV parks in and around Lexington, including Elm Creek RV Park, Shady Grove RV Park, Giddings RV Park, and Rockdale RV Park, are typically booked directly with the property by phone, website, or third-party booking platforms. Availability is easiest to secure midweek and outside major Austin event weekends.
For Texas State Parks such as Lake Somerville, Bastrop, and Buescher, reservations run through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Most overnight camping and lodging can be reserved up to five months in advance, with the rolling window opening daily at 8 a.m. Central Time. Day pass entrance permits can be reserved up to one month before your visit. Popular spring and fall weekends often fill the moment the window opens, so book the day it becomes available.
What to expect on the ground
Expect small-town Texas: two-lane highways, ranchland, and limited services once off the main highways. Lexington and Giddings have grocery stores, fuel, propane, and basic RV supplies, but larger repair shops and dump-station options are easier to find toward Austin or Bryan-College Station.
Most private parks in the area offer full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, gravel or grass pads, and long pull-throughs sized for larger rigs. Cell coverage is generally reliable on the AT&T and Verizon networks along the Highway 77 and Highway 290 corridors but can drop off on ranch roads.
Summer sites benefit from tree cover, so ask about shade when booking. Mosquitoes, fire ants, and ticks are present spring through fall, and drivers should watch for deer at dawn and dusk on rural county roads.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Lexington, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lexington, TX?
RV rental in Lexington is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Brazos Valley and Central Texas. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches can run $250 to $400 nightly. Because Lexington sits in a quieter rural corner of Lee County, you'll often find better nightly rates than rentals based in nearby Austin. To score a cheap RV rental Lexington travelers love, book mid-week stays, avoid Texas A&M football weekends in nearby College Station, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts of 10 to 20 percent. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and travel in early spring to lock in the best bluebonnet-season pricing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lexington,%20TexasWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Lexington, TX?
Great news: a regular Class C Texas driver's license (or your home state/country equivalent) is all you need to rent an RV in Lexington, TX. The Texas Department of Public Safety does not require a Commercial Driver License (CDL) for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers under 26,001 pounds, which covers virtually every rig listed on RVezy. You'll need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during checkout, so there's no paperwork shuffle at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country before you fly in. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the process is, you'll be road-ready in minutes.
dps.texas.gov/section/driver-licenseIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my Lexington RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Lexington booked through RVezy includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 77 with peace of mind. The protection plan covers most accidental damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host). If you have a flat tire on the way to Lake Somerville State Park or a battery issue at a rural campsite outside Giddings, one call gets help dispatched any time, day or night. Book confidently, knowing the safety net is already in place.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy for an RV rental in Lexington, TX?
Booking your Lexington RV trip is low-risk. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a full money-back grace period right after you book. After that, refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your trip start date, and special situations like hurricanes or severe Central Texas storms are reviewed case by case. Every rental follows the same RVezy-managed process, so there's no need to dig through each listing. Pro tip: book early to lock in dates for popular weekends like Round Top Antiques Fair or Texas A&M home games, and you'll still have the grace period to reconsider.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Lexington, TX?
Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Lexington options are available, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who welcome four-legged passengers. Some hosts charge a small pet fee (typically $25 to $75 per trip) to cover extra cleaning, and a quick message to confirm is always a smart move. Lexington and the surrounding Lee County area are very dog-welcoming: Lake Somerville State Park allows leashed pets on all trails, Bastrop State Park has pet-friendly campsites with shaded loops, and the wide-open ranch country around town gives pups plenty of sniffing room. Pack a Texas-tough leash, fresh water, and a tick preventative, summer heat and chiggers are real here, but your dog will love the adventure.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/petsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Lexington?
Yes, RV delivery in Lexington is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who'd rather skip driving a big rig down Highway 77. Many local hosts will deliver, level, and fully set up your motorhome or travel trailer at the campground of your choice, then walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery spots include Lake Somerville State Park (about 50 miles west) and Bastrop State Park (around 60 miles south). Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile round trip. Pro tip: message the host before booking with your exact campsite and dates, you'll often get a custom delivery quote within hours.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-somervilleHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive on my Lexington RV trip?
Mileage is flexible on RVezy, hosts set their own policy, and many Lexington, TX rentals include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with additional miles available at $0.30 to $0.50 each. If you're planning a longer Lexington RV trip, look for listings advertising RV rental with unlimited mileage, several local hosts offer it as an add-on or for weekly bookings. From Lexington you're perfectly positioned: Austin is about 60 miles southwest, College Station 50 miles northeast, San Antonio 140 miles south, Houston 130 miles east, and the Hill Country wineries near Fredericksburg about 140 miles west. Pro tip: map your full route before booking and ask the host for a custom mileage package, it's often cheaper than paying overage fees later.
txdot.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Lexington, TX?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Lexington. Top picks include Lake Somerville State Park (Birch Creek and Nails Creek units, about 50 miles west) with shaded sites and great fishing; Bastrop State Park (about 60 miles south) tucked into the famous Lost Pines forest; Lake Bastrop South Shore Park for waterfront RV sites; Buescher State Park near Smithville for quiet pine-shaded loops; and Oak Thicket Park on Lake Fayette for relaxed weekend escapes. Most of these accept reservations up to 5 months ahead through the Texas State Parks reservation system. Local insider tip: weekday stays at Birch Creek are often wide open, even in peak spring.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-somerville/fees-facilities/birch-creek-unitWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from Lexington, TX?
The sweet spots for an RV road trip from Lexington are mid-March through May and mid-September through November, when daytime highs hover in the comfortable 70s to mid-80s and Texas bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush carpet the roadsides. Summer (June through August) brings serious heat with highs regularly in the mid to upper 90s and humid nights, so look for rentals with strong roof AC and shaded campsites. Winters are mild, with daytime highs in the 55 to 65 degree range and only occasional cold snaps, making Lexington a comfortable cool-season destination. Local insider tip: book April weekends early, wildflower season fills campgrounds fast across Lee and surrounding counties.
weather.gov/ewx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to love it. First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially in a low-traffic area like Lexington. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery), walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, dump valves, and driving tips. You can message your host any time during the trip with questions, and RVezy customer support is available through the app. For your first outing, consider a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer, and pick a nearby campground like Lake Somerville so you're not driving long distances on day one. Pro tip: rent for at least 3 nights, day one is setup, day two is when the fun really starts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/What happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Lexington comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included in your protection plan. If you get a flat on FM 696, a dead battery at a remote campsite, or run out of fuel on the way to Austin, one call gets help dispatched to your location. For mechanical issues, your host is also a direct lifeline (they know their RV best), and RVezy support can help coordinate solutions if needed. Keep your host's number saved and screenshot your booking details before you lose cell signal in rural Lee County. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around every morning checking tires, lights, and hitch, two minutes of prevention saves hours of hassle.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my Lexington, TX rental RV to other states or Mexico?
Yes, you can take your Lexington RV across state lines. Popular routes include heading east to Louisiana's Cajun country, west to New Mexico's White Sands, north to Oklahoma's lakes, or down to the Texas Gulf Coast. Just confirm your route with the host when booking so mileage and dates line up. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage stops at the U.S. border, so plan your Rio Grande adventures on the U.S. side (Big Bend National Park is a stunning drive west). Cross-border trips into Canada may be possible with specific host approval. Pro tip: a Lexington-to-Hill-Country loop through Fredericksburg and Luckenbach is a perfect 3-day taste of Texas.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how do I budget for gas?
Budgeting fuel for your Lexington RV trip is straightforward. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves, but towing one with a half-ton truck typically returns 10 to 13 MPG. Class B campervans are the most efficient at 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A coaches usually run 6 to 9 MPG. Texas gas prices are consistently among the lowest in the U.S., and you'll find convenient fill-ups at Buc-ee's in Bastrop or the Love's in Giddings. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, plan on roughly $100 to $150 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up before leaving the Austin metro, rural pumps near Lexington can run a few cents higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lexington?
For the best campgrounds near Lexington, aim to book 3 to 5 months ahead, especially for spring weekends and fall cool-downs. Texas State Parks (including Lake Somerville, Bastrop, and Buescher) open reservations exactly 5 months in advance through the official Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and prime sites can vanish within minutes for holiday weekends. Private RV parks like Sonny's RV Park and Oak Forest RV Park are usually easier to grab on shorter notice, often just 2 to 3 weeks out. For ACL Festival, F1 weekend at Circuit of the Americas, or Texas A&M home games, book even earlier, 6 months is not too soon. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for 5 months out at 8 a.m. Central, that's when state park slots refresh.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Lexington, TX?
Driving an RV around Lexington is refreshingly low-stress. The town sits at the intersection of US-77 and TX-21, both wide highways with gentle terrain, light traffic, and almost no hills or sharp curves, perfect practice routes for new RVers. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk (especially on rural FM roads) and afternoon thunderstorms in spring that can drop visibility fast. If you're heading toward Austin via US-290, plan to avoid rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m.). Pro tip: use the Texas DOT DriveTexas site to check real-time road and weather conditions, it's the same tool locals trust before a Hill Country run.
drivetexas.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Lexington?
Campgrounds around Lexington range from full-service private parks to rustic state park sites. Most private parks like Lake Bastrop South Shore offer 30/50-amp electric, fresh water, sewer hookups, WiFi, hot showers, and laundry. Texas state parks like Lake Somerville's Birch Creek unit typically provide water and 30/50-amp electric at the site, with shared dump stations near the exit. You can dump tanks and fill fresh water at most state parks with your campsite reservation. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot fresh water hose and both a 30-amp and 50-amp adapter, they cover virtually every site setup in Central Texas.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/bastrop/fees-facilitiesWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Lexington?
Most motorhome rental Lexington listings come fully equipped so you can pull up and start camping. Expect a queen or king bed, bunk or convertible dinette sleeping areas, a working kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, roof-mounted air conditioning (a must in Texas heat), a furnace, and seatbelts for the travel group. Many rigs also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, onboard generator, and outdoor awning. WiFi varies, some hosts offer mobile hotspots as an add-on. A campervan rental Lexington adventurers love is great for couples wanting simplicity, while a Class C is the family sweet spot. Pro tip: check each listing's photo gallery and amenities list, and message the host if you need a specific item like a coffee maker or pack-n-play.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lexington,%20TexasWhat add-ons and options do Lexington RV hosts offer?
Lexington hosts make it easy to customize your trip with helpful add-ons. Common options include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, pans, and dishes ($25 to $50), generator usage ($3 to $5 per hour or a flat daily rate), bike racks, outdoor grills, camping chairs, and even pre-stocked firewood. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on for a family RV trip Lexington families take, often saving stress and driving anxiety. Pickup typically happens between 1 and 4 p.m. with drop-off by 11 a.m., though many hosts are flexible if you ask. Mileage policies are listed clearly on every listing. Pro tip: bundle linens, kitchen kit, and delivery in one booking conversation, hosts often discount when you take multiple add-ons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lexington,%20TexasHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your RV rental Texas trip is simple and secure. RVezy charges your credit or debit card directly through the platform, never cash to the host. You'll typically pay a deposit at booking and the remaining balance closer to your trip start date. A refundable security deposit (usually $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup and released after return, assuming no damage. Doing a quick walk-around video at both pickup and drop-off is the best way to avoid any disputes. Pro tip: use a credit card rather than debit, the pre-authorization hold won't temporarily tie up cash in your checking account during your Lexington adventure.
