Campgrounds near Lockhart, Texas
Lockhart sits in the Post Oak Savannah of central Texas, about 30 miles south of Austin and roughly an hour from San Antonio. The town is best known as the state-designated Barbecue Capital of Texas, and its campgrounds serve as a practical base for exploring Hill Country, the San Marcos River, and central Texas food routes.
RV options in the area range from a Civilian Conservation Corps-era state park to modern private resorts. Lockhart State Park offers water and electric plus full-hookup sites in two small loops, with a nine-hole golf course and a seasonal swimming pool on the grounds. Nearby private parks include Lake Falling Star RV Resort, Cowboy RV Park, and Longhorn RV Resort, all within short driving distance of downtown Lockhart.
For campers wanting river access, San Marcos River Resort provides a riverside setting west of town. The mix of public and private options makes the Lockhart area workable for a weekend food and barbecue trip or a longer stay with side visits to Austin and San Antonio.
Things to do near Lockhart
The main draw is barbecue. Lockhart's historic downtown holds several long-running smokehouses, and the state legislature designated the city of Lockhart as the Barbecue Capital of Texas in 1999. Plan food stops around lunch, since some pits sell out by mid-afternoon.
At Lockhart State Park, families can play the nine-hole golf course, swim in the CCC-built pool during summer, and fish Clear Fork Creek for sunfish, catfish, and bass. Guests do not need a fishing license to fish at Lockhart State Park. Short interpretive trails wind along the creek and past historic CCC structures.
Off-property options include tubing and paddling on the San Marcos River, wineries and shops in nearby Martindale and Luling, and day trips to Austin's museums or the San Antonio River Walk.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping in central Texas. From March through May, daytime highs climb from the low 70s into the mid 80s, wildflowers bloom along roadsides, and creek levels usually run full. May is the wettest month in Lockhart, with rain falling on about 16 days and accumulating around 110 mm of precipitation, so watch for thunderstorm cells and low-water crossings.
Summer is hot and long. June through August routinely brings highs in the low to mid 90s and heat-index values above 100, and shade is limited at many area RV sites. The park pool operates Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Thursday through Tuesday, which helps families cope with the heat.
Fall cools gradually from September into November and is a popular window for weekend trips. Winters are short and mild, with a January average low around 44 degrees and only rare freezes; most private parks stay open year-round.

RV was great! We had a wonderful time renting it for a weekend at COTA. Jesse was very responsive and helpful anytime we needed it.

Jesse is great! This is my second time renting a camper from him and he has been very easy to work with. We were camping locally and he even stopped by to check on us the day after our departure and brought us an outdoor rug just in case we got some rain! I highly recommend him and we will certainly be using him again in the future!

How to book a campsite near Lockhart
Lockhart State Park reservations are handled through the Texas State Parks reservation system operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife. Campsites can be booked for today and up to 5 months in advance, and the park often reaches capacity on weekends, so reservations are recommended for both camping and day use.
If a site is not available, a self-pay station kiosk next to park headquarters lists open sites and holds self-pay envelopes for late-arriving campers. Customers arriving after hours must use the self-pay station and register at Park Headquarters by 9 a.m. the next morning. A day-use entry fee applies in addition to the camping fee.
Private parks such as Lake Falling Star RV Resort, Cowboy RV Park, Longhorn RV Resort, and San Marcos River Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Book holiday weekends and Austin-event dates well in advance.
What to expect on-site
Lockhart State Park has two small RV loops with roughly 20 sites total. The Fairway View Camping Loop includes full hookups for RVs up to 40 feet, while the second loop provides water and electric only on smaller pads. Sites are not particularly deep and some slope backward, so bring leveling blocks. The park has a dump station.
Shade is limited on the full-hookup loop, which backs onto the golf course. Restrooms with showers, picnic tables, and grills are provided. Cell coverage is generally usable, and the town of Lockhart is a short drive for groceries, fuel, and barbecue.
Private parks around town vary in amenities but typically add pull-through sites, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Fire ants can be a nuisance in warm months, so keep food sealed and check site pads on arrival.

tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lockhartWhen is the best time to visit Lockhart in an RV?

Late October pairs cooler weather with the Chisholm Trail Roundup, a true taste of small-town Texas charm.
weather.gov/ewx/I've never rented an RV before. Is this really doable?
Absolutely, and Lockhart is a great place for first time renting an RV. Hosts on RVezy provide a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering the generator, water system, slide-outs, dump procedure, and driving tips, so nothing is left to guesswork. Lockhart's roads are flat and uncrowded compared to Austin, and US-183 and TX-130 are modern, easy-to-drive highways. If you are nervous about size, start with a Class C motorhome or a campervan rental in Lockhart, both of which handle much like a large van. Remember that 24/7 roadside assistance is included with your protection plan. Most first timers say the hardest decision was which BBQ joint to visit first.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my Lockhart RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every motorhome rental in Lockhart through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with the protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, or lockout is just one phone call away. The dispatch team can send help anywhere in Texas, whether you are parked at Lockhart State Park or stopped on the way to Fredericksburg. Snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup and save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave. A few minutes of prep buys real peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take an RV road trip from Lockhart across state lines or into Mexico?
Interstate travel is wide open. An RV road trip from Lockhart can easily roll into Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, or Arkansas, and most hosts are happy to accommodate, just confirm by message before booking. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because the insurance and protection coverage do not extend across that border. Popular cross-state routes from Lockhart include New Orleans (about 8 hours via I-10), Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico (around 8 to 9 hours west), and Hot Springs, Arkansas (roughly 9 hours northeast). Let your host know your full route in advance so they can advise on toll tags for Texas highways like TX-130, which runs right past Lockhart.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of gas mileage and fuel cost should I budget?
Setting realistic expectations makes for a smoother trip. Travel trailers do not burn fuel themselves but typically drop a tow vehicle to around 10 to 12 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs are usually 6 to 10 MPG. Campervans are the most efficient at roughly 15 to 20 MPG. Gas prices around Lockhart and the I-35 corridor generally track close to or slightly below the Texas average. For a 4-night, 300-mile loop through the Hill Country in a Class C, plan on roughly $130 to $200 in fuel depending on current prices. Buc-ee's in nearby Luling has competitive pricing, clean restrooms, and large parking lots that easily fit any RV.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lockhart?
For Lockhart State Park, book as early as possible. Texas Parks and Wildlife opens reservations up to 5 months in advance, and weekends from March through May and October through November fill quickly, especially around Austin City Limits and SXSW. Private parks like Pecan Park Riverside RV Park generally book 2 to 3 months ahead for peak weekends but often have midweek availability just a week or two out. If a Saturday at Lockhart State Park is sold out, check back a few days before, since cancellations often release prime sites. Pair that strategy with a flexible pickup day on RVezy and you will land a great spot.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Lockhart?
Driving an RV around Lockhart is refreshingly low-stress. The terrain is gently rolling Hill Country prairie with no steep mountain grades, and main routes like US-183, TX-130, and TX-142 are wide, modern, and rarely congested. Watch for occasional spring thunderstorms (April through May) that can bring strong crosswinds, and keep an eye out for fast-developing summer afternoon storms. The biggest local quirk is the TX-130 toll road just west of town, which has the highest posted speed limit in the US, though 60 to 65 MPH is a comfortable pace in an RV. Avoid downtown Austin during rush hour by routing through SH-45 instead. Overall, it is scenic and very RV-friendly.

Travel trailers tend to be the most budget-friendly, often around $95 to $140 per night, and many sleep 4 to 6 comfortably.
