Campgrounds near Luling, Texas
Luling sits along the San Marcos River in Caldwell County, roughly 47 miles south of Austin and 57 miles east of San Antonio via Interstate 10. The town is a practical base for RV travelers exploring south-central Texas, with several parks within a short drive of downtown and easy highway access from I-10 and US 183.
The closest option to town is Riverbend RV Park, a family-owned property with a swimming pool, river access, a small recreation area, laundry, a catch-and-release fishing lake, and gated grounds. About nine miles south, Palmetto State Park is a Texas Parks and Wildlife property in Gonzales County, offering the area's only state-park camping in a small, heavily wooded setting along the San Marcos River.
Additional private options within a short drive include Cowboy RV Park, San Marcos River Resort in Fentress, and Leisure Resort. Together these give travelers a mix of full-hookup RV sites, riverfront access, and state-park camping loops within roughly fifteen minutes of Luling.
Things to do around Luling
The San Marcos River is the main draw. Paddlers can canoe the river through Palmetto State Park, where the current is steady with no rapids, and experienced paddlers put in upstream for a longer float down to the park; shuttles must be arranged privately. Fishing is allowed in the river and in the four-acre Oxbow Lake, and no license is required to fish from shore in a Texas state park.
On land, Palmetto State Park has short interpretive trails through dwarf palmetto stands, an artesian well, and CCC-era stone structures. The park sits on the Great Texas Birding Trail and hosts over 200 bird species, including red-shouldered hawks and crested caracaras.
In town, Luling is known for barbecue and the Zedler Mill Paddling Trail. Gonzales, a short drive east, adds Texas Revolution history.

Palmetto State Park is busiest from March through November, and summer weekends fill quickly with families paddling and swimming the river. Because the park has few campsites, reservations should be made early for weekends March through November and anytime during summer school breaks. Shoulder months in March, April, October, and early November tend to be the most comfortable for RV travel, with warm days and cooler nights.
Summer is hot and humid. Shade from the wooded loops helps, but afternoon heat indices routinely climb into the upper 90s. Winter is generally mild, with occasional cold snaps, and campsites are far easier to secure.
Flooding is a real seasonal consideration. The San Marcos River runs through Palmetto State Park and can rise quickly during heavy rain, and the park gate is closed when the park is flooded. Weather should be monitored closely before and during any spring or early-summer trip.

RV was great! We had a wonderful time renting it for a weekend at COTA. Jesse was very responsive and helpful anytime we needed it.

Jesse is great! This is my second time renting a camper from him and he has been very easy to work with. We were camping locally and he even stopped by to check on us the day after our departure and brought us an outdoor rug just in case we got some rain! I highly recommend him and we will certainly be using him again in the future!

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Luling%2C%20TexasDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Luling?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Luling for the vast majority of rigs on RVezy. The Texas Department of Public Safety only requires a non-commercial Class A or Class B license for personal-use RVs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating over 26,000 pounds, which excludes nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on the platform. The single biggest event to plan around is the Luling Watermelon Thump, held the last full weekend of June every year since 1954, draws over 30,000 visitors. Pro tip: book your Thump-weekend RV at least 90 days out, nearby campgrounds fill quickly.
weather.gov/ewx/I've never rented an RV before. How does it work in Luling?
First time renting an RV in Luling is genuinely easier than most people expect. After you book on RVezy, your host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through the generator, water hookups, propane, slide-outs, awning, and waste tanks, so you are never handed keys and left guessing. You can also message the host with questions before booking. Most beginners do great in a Class C motorhome or a delivered travel trailer, because both are forgiving to drive or skip driving entirely. Luling's flat terrain and quiet rural highways like SH-80 are kind to new RVers. Pro tip: schedule a relaxed first night at River Bend RV Park, full hookups make practicing systems stress-free before you head deeper into Texas.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never alone on the road: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on US-90 or a battery issue at Palmetto State Park is just a phone call away. Roadside help can dispatch tire service, jump-starts, lockout assistance, and towing across Texas. Your host is also reachable for quick how-to questions like the propane switch, the water pump, or the AC breaker, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN, license plate, and propane tank size at pickup, having those details handy makes any roadside call lightning fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Luling RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Crossing state lines is generally welcomed: an RV road trip from Luling to Louisiana, New Mexico, or even Colorado is fair game, and your RVezy protection coverage travels with you across the United States. Mexico, however, is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the insurance and protection coverage do not extend across the border, so plan to keep your trip within the U.S. Popular cross-border swings include Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico (about 460 miles west) and Hot Springs, Arkansas (around 600 miles northeast). Confirm your route with the host before booking so they can adjust mileage if needed. Pro tip: I-10 west from Luling is the smoothest long-haul launch, with fewer mountain grades and plenty of RV-friendly fuel stops.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in Luling?
Realistic fuel budgeting makes your RV rental Texas trip smoother. Class C motorhomes around Luling typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg, and a half-ton truck towing a travel trailer averages 10 to 14 mpg. Texas gas prices generally run below the national average, with recent regular unleaded around Luling hovering near $2.80 to $3.30 per gallon and diesel slightly higher. Buc-ee's in Luling on I-10 is a popular fuel stop with easy RV pull-through access. For a 3-night trip staying within an hour of town, budget around $90 to $170 in fuel. eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Luling?
For the best campgrounds near Luling, book early and book smart. Palmetto State Park opens reservations 5 months in advance through Texas Parks and Wildlife's online system and routinely sells out for weekends from March through October, set a calendar reminder for the 5-month mark. Private parks like River Bend RV Park and Patriot RV Park can usually be booked 30 to 60 days ahead for weekdays, but Watermelon Thump weekend (last full weekend of June) often sells out 3 to 6 months in advance. Group sites at Palmetto can be reserved up to 12 months out. Pro tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) are far easier to snag and often cheaper, plus the river and trails feel half as crowded.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/palmetto/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat are driving conditions like around Luling?
Driving conditions around Luling are about as RV-friendly as Texas gets: flat to gently rolling terrain, wide rural highways, and four-lane access via Interstate 10 and US-183. In-town speeds are slow and the historic downtown grid is easy to navigate, though watch for low-clearance railroad underpasses south of Magnolia Avenue if you're driving a tall Class A. Summer thunderstorms can drop heavy rain quickly, and the San Marcos River near Palmetto State Park is known for flash flooding at low water crossings, so check the forecast before heading to riverside parks. Pro tip: tune into TxDOT's DriveTexas alerts before you roll, and avoid driving during the 4 to 6 p.m. heat-of-day window in July and August when tire pressure peaks.

Private parks like River Bend RV Park and Patriot RV Park feature 30/50-amp full hookups (water, sewer, electric), Wi-Fi, swimming pools, laundry, and pet areas. You can refill fresh water and use dump stations at both Palmetto State Park and most private parks in town, and Buc-ee's on I-10 is a handy fuel-and-dump backup. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50-amp adapter, they cover almost every hookup combo you'll find around Caldwell County.

Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (most rigs sleep 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a private bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning (essential here), a propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many motorhome rental Luling listings also include flat-screen TVs, outdoor speakers, awnings with LED lighting, backup cameras, and generators for off-grid stays. Wi-Fi hotspots and solar panels are common add-ons. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count to match your group, and read the amenities list carefully if you want a specific must-have like an outdoor kitchen or king bed.

Mileage policies vary by host: many include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles charged per mile, and some listings offer unlimited mileage. Pickup is usually morning-of with a 45- to 60-minute walkthrough, and drop-off is typically by 11 a.m. Pro tip: if you are heading to the Watermelon Thump or Lockhart barbecue trail, ask about a half-day late drop-off, hosts often grant it for free if their next booking allows.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Luling%2C%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Luling RV rental?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy, no cash, no checks, no awkward host transactions. You pay the rental total and protection fee with a credit or debit card at booking, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, separate from your booking payment. The deposit is released after drop-off as long as the RV comes back in the same condition, with the agreed mileage and generator hours, and properly emptied tanks. Pro tip: take a short walkaround video at both pickup and return, timestamped photos protect everyone and make any deposit questions easy to resolve through RVezy support.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle Luling's summer heat in an RV?
Summer in Luling is hot, regularly 95 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit from June through August, but a well-prepped RV makes it genuinely enjoyable. Choose a listing with dual roof air conditioners if you're traveling June through September, park with the slide-outs facing east or under shade trees at places like River Bend RV Park, and pre-cool the rig before midday. Drive in the early morning when tires and engines run cooler, and keep window shades down during peak sun. Hydration matters, the Watermelon Thump in late June is famously sweltering, so stock the fridge with cold water before you go. Pro tip: book a campground with 50-amp service, it lets both AC units run without tripping breakers on triple-digit afternoons.
