Camping near McDade, Texas
McDade is a small unincorporated community in Bastrop County, roughly halfway between Elgin and Bastrop along US Highway 290. It sits on the western edge of the Lost Pines, an isolated stand of loblolly pine that extends south and east toward Bastrop and Smithville. The area works as a practical base for RV travelers headed to central Texas without staying inside Austin itself.
Options closest to town are private RV parks along the Highway 21 and Highway 290 corridors, including Hwy 21 RV Park and Storage, Colinas RV Park, and Star Ranch Nudist Resort. A short drive south toward Bastrop opens up The Pines at Bastrop RV Park and Hope Hill Park, both convenient for families using the region as a hub.
Nearby public land at Bastrop State Park and Buescher State Park extends the choices considerably. Both parks are managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and offer developed campsites within about a 20 to 40 minute drive of McDade.
Things to do around McDade
Most trip planning centers on the two nearby state parks. Bastrop State Park has more than seven miles of trails through the recovering Lost Pines forest. Park Road 1C, a scenic route between Bastrop and Buescher state parks, is popular for biking and driving. Fishing is available at the half-acre Lake Mina and the 20-acre Little Alum Creek Lake, with the latter reached by a 5-mile round-trip hike on Heron Hideaway Trail.
At Buescher State Park, visitors can paddle and fish the park lake, which holds species such as largemouth bass, sunfish, and catfish, and no fishing license is required for anglers casting from shore in a Texas state park.
Day trips from McDade reach downtown Bastrop for restaurants and small museums, and Austin sits roughly a 45-minute drive west along Highway 290.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in this part of central Texas. March through May brings warming days, wildflower bloom along Highway 290 and the state park roads, and some of the highest rainfall totals of the year. Late spring storms can be intense, so campers should watch forecasts and plan for occasional flash-flood warnings.
Summer is hot and humid. Highs at Austin-Bergstrom, the nearest official climate station, commonly reach the mid to upper 90s from June through August, and shaded pine-forest sites at Bastrop and Buescher state parks are in strong demand. In summer, the seasonal pool at Bastrop State Park is a popular draw. Reservations for weekends fill weeks in advance.
Fall cools gradually, with September still warm and November approaching frost overnight. Winter is mild but variable, with occasional freezes and generally the driest stretch of the calendar. Most private RV parks in the area operate year-round, while state-park campground demand drops noticeably between the winter holidays and early spring.

How to book campsites near McDade
Private parks near McDade, including Hwy 21 RV Park and Storage, Colinas RV Park, The Pines at Bastrop RV Park, and Hope Hill Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Star Ranch Nudist Resort operates as a members-and-guests property and requires contacting the resort in advance to arrange access.
For Bastrop and Buescher state parks, reservations go through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reservation system. Campsites can be booked online, with options ranging from walk-in tent sites to sites with water and electric and a smaller number of full-hookup RV sites, and CCC-era cabins are also available for rent at Bastrop State Park. Reservations can be made online at the Texas State Parks portal well in advance of a stay; popular weekends in spring and fall fill up months out. A daily entrance fee applies per adult in addition to campsite fees, and an annual Texas State Parks Pass covers day-use entry.
What to expect on-site
Private parks along Highway 21 and Highway 290 generally offer full-hookup pull-through and back-in sites, laundry, and Wi-Fi, with terrain that is flat to gently rolling and shade that varies by park. Expect a mix of long-term residents and short-stay travelers at these properties, which is typical for the Bastrop-Elgin corridor.
At the state parks, sites are set among pines and oaks. Campsites range from walk-in tent sites to full-hookup RV sites, with the Piney Hill area at Bastrop State Park set aside for RVs. Bastrop State Park does not have an entry gate, and office hours run 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.
Dogs are welcome at no extra cost but must stay on a six-foot leash, cannot be left unattended, and are not allowed inside park buildings.

Choose a smaller Class C motorhome or a travel trailer that matches your tow vehicle for the easiest learning curve, or pick a host who delivers and sets up so you only have to focus on enjoying camp. rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my McDade RV rental to Mexico or out of state?
Cross-state Texas road trips are absolutely on the table, and most hosts welcome interstate travel, just message them through the listing to confirm your route. Popular RV road trip from McDade options include Big Bend National Park (about 7 hours west), New Orleans (8 hours east), and the Gulf Coast at Galveston (about 3 hours southeast). Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage do not extend across the border. If you are dreaming of a longer haul, send the host a quick message before you book so everyone is on the same page about mileage and destinations.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting is easier than you'd think. Class B campervans average 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG, and big Class A coaches run 6-10 MPG. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but reduce your tow vehicle's MPG by 25-40%. Gas in the McDade and Bastrop area typically runs a little below the national average thanks to nearby Texas refineries. A weekend Austin loop (about 100 miles round trip) might cost $40-$60 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Elgin or Bastrop before heading toward the Hill Country, prices climb noticeably once you get past Johnson City.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near McDade?
Earlier is better, especially for the Lost Pines parks. Texas Parks and Wildlife opens reservations five months in advance, and Bastrop State Park, Buescher State Park, and Lake Bastrop South Shore typically book solid for spring weekends, holidays, and any weekend with an Austin festival like SXSW or ACL. For peak months (March through May, plus October), aim to reserve your site the day the five-month window opens. Weekday stays and private RV parks like Yegua Creek Campground often have last-minute openings. Pro tip: pair your RVezy booking confirmation with your campsite reservation so your host knows exactly where to deliver if you choose that option.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/reservationsWhat are local driving conditions like around McDade?
McDade sits in a sweet spot for easy RV driving. Highway 290 and Highway 21 are the main routes, both wide, well-maintained two-lane roads with light rural traffic outside of rush hour around Elgin and Austin. Watch for sudden Texas thunderstorms in spring (April-May) that can bring hail and 60+ mph wind gusts, and slow down on FM roads where deer are common at dawn and dusk. Avoid downtown Austin in a big rig, take SH 130 toll road around the city instead. Summer pavement gets hot, so check tire pressure in the morning. Otherwise, the rolling Post Oak Savannah landscape is a relaxed, scenic drive perfect for any motorhome rental McDade visitors choose.
drivetexas.org/What amenities do campgrounds near McDade offer?
You'll be well taken care of. Bastrop State Park and Buescher State Park offer 30 and 50 amp electric hookups, water at each site, central dump stations, hot showers, and flush toilets. Lake Bastrop South Shore Park has full hookups (water, electric, and sewer at site) plus a swim beach and boat ramp. Private parks like Yegua Creek typically include full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi. For dumping and freshwater fills between trips, the Bastrop State Park dump station is open to registered campers, and several truck stops along Highway 290 in Giddings have dump access for a small fee. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter for maximum flexibility.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/bastrop/fees-facilitiesWhat features and amenities come with a McDade RV rental?
Most RVs in the McDade area come fully equipped and ready to camp. Expect a queen or king bed, full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, roof and dash air conditioning (essential for Texas summers), a propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many hosts include a TV, and a growing number offer Wi-Fi hotspots, generators, or solar setups, great for boondocking near the Colorado River. Class C motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 6, while larger Class A and fifth wheels can sleep 8 or more. Check each listing amenities tab so you know exactly what is included before you book your campervan rental McDade adventure.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=McDade%2C%20TexasWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when booking?
Hosts make customizing easy. Common add-ons include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, generators, bike racks, BBQs, and even kayaks, perfect for paddling the Colorado River near Bastrop. Many McDade-area hosts offer flexible pickup windows and on-site walkthroughs, while others deliver straight to your campsite for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by listing, with some offering 100 to 150 included miles per night and others bundling unlimited miles for longer Texas RV trip itineraries. Everything is spelled out clearly on the listing page before you book. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you are planning to dry camp at McKinney Roughs or any primitive site.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=McDade%2C%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never with cash or off-platform transfers, which keeps you protected by RVezy policies and the renter protection plan. Most hosts also require a refundable security deposit, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV class, which is pre-authorized on your card before your trip and released within a few days of return assuming no damage or excess cleaning. To avoid issues, document the RV condition with photos at pickup and dropoff, fill the fuel and propane to the agreed level, and follow the host mileage and pet rules. Easy, transparent, and stress-free.
