Campgrounds near Meridian, Texas
Meridian sits in the rolling Cross Timbers country of Bosque County in central Texas, roughly 90 minutes south of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and about an hour northwest of Waco. The town serves as the western gateway for two Texas state parks that anchor most RV trips in the area: Meridian State Park on Lake Meridian, three miles west of town on Highway 22, and Lake Whitney State Park about 30 miles east on the 23,500-acre Lake Whitney reservoir.
RV travelers choosing this region typically stage at one of a handful of properties. Crosstimbers - Meridian State Park offers electric and water hookup sites next to a small, no-wake lake with CCC-era stonework. Road Runner - Lake Whitney State Park and Lake Whitney Marina at Juniper Cove sit on the larger reservoir for boating and swimming access. Hackberry Acres RV Park in nearby Clifton and American Inn and RV Park provide private-park options with pull-through sites for travelers who want hookups without state-park reservation windows.
Expect terrain of juniper-oak woods, limestone outcrops, and open prairie, with lakes for fishing, paddling, and, at Whitney, motorized boating.
Things to do near Meridian
Water recreation drives most itineraries. Lake Whitney permits motorized boating, water skiing, and swimming, with a boat ramp and fish-cleaning shelter at the state park. Anglers target largemouth, striped, and white bass, plus blue catfish. Lake Meridian is a 72-acre no-wake lake better suited to kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, and shoreline fishing, with loaner fishing gear available at park headquarters.
On land, Meridian State Park has about five miles of trails, including a loop around Lake Meridian past limestone overlooks. Bird watchers visit for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler, which nests in the park's juniper woods each spring.
Off-park, the town of Meridian has a small historic square, and Waco (Magnolia Silo District, Cameron Park Zoo, Dr Pepper Museum) is under an hour south.

Peak camping season runs March through October, matching warm-water recreation on both lakes. Spring is the most popular window: wildflowers and bluebonnets bloom from late March into May, temperatures are mild, and the golden-cheeked warbler is present at Meridian State Park. Spring is also the wettest stretch, with thunderstorms most common in April and May, so sites near low-water crossings can flood briefly.
Summer brings hot, humid days with highs commonly in the mid-90s and occasional triple digits. Lakefront sites and shaded loops book first; reservations often fill for holiday weekends the moment the five-month booking window opens. Fall cools gradually, with October a strong shoulder-season choice for lower crowds and comfortable evenings.
Winter is mild by North American standards. January lows average around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, first freeze typically arrives in late November, and last freeze in mid-March. Campgrounds stay open year round, and Lake Whitney State Park offers weekly rates from November through February for longer stays.
How to book Meridian campgrounds
Both state parks are managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife and share a single reservation system. Sites at Crosstimbers - Meridian State Park and Road Runner - Lake Whitney State Park can be booked online through the Texas State Parks reservation portal or by phone through the customer service center at 512-389-8900. The booking window opens five months in advance, and popular summer and holiday weekends typically sell out at release.
A daily park entrance fee applies in addition to the campsite fee and is charged per person age 13 and older. Late arrivals must call the park before the office closes for gate-code instructions; gate codes are not issued over the phone to walk-ins without a confirmed reservation.
Private parks in the area, including Hackberry Acres RV Park and American Inn and RV Park, book directly with the property and generally offer more flexible last-minute availability than the state parks.
What to expect on arrival
Meridian State Park gates are open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with the office staffed until 4:45 p.m. daily. Lake Whitney State Park keeps similar gate hours, with the office closing at 4:30 p.m. Quiet hours begin at 10 p.m. at both parks.
Site mix varies. At Meridian, Crosstimbers sites 1-8 are pull-throughs suited to RVs over 20 feet; sites 9-15 are smaller and better for pop-ups, vans, and short trailers. Lake Whitney has eight campgrounds and 165 sites, ranging from full-hookup pull-throughs in the Horseshoe loop to water-and-electric loops such as Road Runner, White-Tail, Star View, and Lake View.
Cell coverage is generally usable on major carriers at both parks. Both offer flush restrooms, showers, potable water, and dump stations. Pets are allowed at campsites but not inside park buildings.

Absolutely, and Meridian is a fantastic spot for it. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Meridian show up on RVezy when you toggle the Pet-Friendly filter, and Meridian State Park welcomes leashed dogs (six-foot leash max) on every trail except inside park buildings. Lake Whitney State Park, about 25 miles east, also allows pets at campsites and on shoreline trails. Bring a tie-out, plenty of water (Texas summers hit 95°F+), and a copy of vaccination records in case you stop at a groomer or boarding kennel in nearby Clifton or Waco. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and ask about their cleaning expectations.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/pets-in-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Meridian?
Yes, RV delivery in Meridian is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-timers heading to Meridian State Park's Cross Timbers Campground. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig to your reserved site at the state park, Lake Whitney, or Lake Waco, level it, hook up water and 30/50-amp electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing stress, no backing into a tight pull-through, and no figuring out the propane on your own. Filter for Delivery on RVezy, then message hosts to confirm the delivery fee and radius. It's the easiest way to enjoy RV camping Meridian-style without ever driving the RV yourself.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/meridian/fees-facilities/campsitesHow does mileage work and how far can I drive on a Meridian RV trip?

From Meridian, popular drives include Waco (about 40 miles south), Fort Worth (about 90 miles north), Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose (about 35 miles northwest), Austin (about 140 miles south), and the Texas Hill Country wineries near Fredericksburg (about 200 miles south). A typical 3-day local trip uses around 150 to 250 miles. Pro tip: if you are planning a longer Meridian RV trip, sort listings by unlimited mileage to keep your budget predictable.

tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/meridian/fees-facilities/campsitesWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Meridian?
Spring (mid-March through May) and fall (late September through early November) are the sweet spots for RV camping in Meridian. Daytime highs in those windows typically run 70F to 85F, evenings are cool and comfortable, and wildflowers (especially bluebonnets in April) carpet the Bosque County hills. Summers are hot, with July and August highs averaging in the mid-90s F and heat indexes often pushing past 105F, so look for an RV with strong air conditioning if you visit then. Winters are mild, with January highs near the upper 50s F and hard freezes uncommon, making it a great shoulder-season option for snowbirds. Local insider tip: late spring lines up with golden-cheeked warbler nesting season at Meridian State Park, a rare birding bucket-list moment.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never rented an RV before. How does this work in Meridian?
First time renting an RV? You're in great hands. Every RVezy host in the Meridian area gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through driving tips, the water system, propane, generator, slide-outs, awning, and dump procedure. Many hosts even send a short video before your trip so nothing feels new on day one. You can message your host any question before booking, and RVezy support is available 24/7 throughout your trip. For an easy first outing, rent a Class C motorhome or travel trailer, have it delivered to Meridian State Park (just 3 miles west of town on Highway 22), and focus on enjoying the lake instead of learning to drive a rig. Confidence comes fast once you're set up.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/meridianWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Meridian, TX booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to the nearest qualified repair facility. For non-emergency issues like a finicky water pump or AC question, message your host directly through the app: most owners are local to Bosque or McLennan County and respond quickly. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Meridian RV rental on a road trip across Texas or out of state?
Yes, an RV road trip from Meridian is one of the best ways to see Texas and beyond. Travel within the United States and Canada is generally allowed on RVezy rentals; cross-border travel to Mexico is not permitted due to insurance limitations. Popular routes include the Hill Country wine loop through Fredericksburg and Luckenbach (about 200 miles south), Big Bend National Park (about 480 miles west, a classic 5 to 7 day trip), Galveston (about 250 miles southeast), and Hot Springs, Arkansas (about 425 miles northeast). Confirm any long-distance plans with your host before booking so they can adjust mileage if needed. Pro tip: I-35 between Waco and Austin is one of the most congested corridors in Texas, so leave early.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect and how do I budget for gas?
Realistic fuel mileage is one of the biggest budget surprises for renters, so let's get ahead of it. Class A motorhomes average 7 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes run 8 to 12 mpg, campervans (Class B) get 15 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect a 20 to 30 percent drop. Gas in the Meridian area typically runs slightly below the Texas average because of nearby refineries; you'll find the cheapest fuel at the stations along Highway 6 and in Clifton. For a 3-day, 250-mile trip in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 for fuel. Fill up before you leave town: stations are sparse west of Meridian State Park.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Meridian?
For Meridian State Park's Cross Timbers Campground, book as early as possible: Texas State Parks accept reservations up to 5 months in advance through the official Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and weekend sites at this small campground often fill quickly, especially March through May and October. Lake Whitney State Park reservations also open 5 months out through TPWD, while U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks like Cedron Creek open 6 months out via Recreation.gov. Private parks like Bosque Bottoms RV Park and Hackberry Acres in Clifton are usually easier to grab 2 to 4 weeks out. Local insider tip: midweek availability is wide open year-round, so a Tuesday-to-Thursday trip is a stress-free way to lock in a great site.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/meridian/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat are the roads like for driving an RV around Meridian?
Driving conditions around Meridian are some of the friendliest in Texas for new RVers. Highway 22, Highway 6, and Highway 144 are wide two-lane state highways with gentle curves and light traffic outside of school commute times. The road into Meridian State Park (Park Road 7) has a couple of tight curves on the western shore of Lake Meridian, so take it slow with a larger rig. Watch for sudden Texas storms in spring (May is peak severe weather month) and the occasional white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk. Avoid driving I-35 through Waco during weekday rush hours. If big-city driving makes you nervous, choose a host who offers delivery and skip the highways altogether.
txdot.gov/safety.htmlWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Meridian?
Campgrounds around Meridian are well equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Meridian State Park's Cross Timbers Campground offers water and 30-amp electric at every site, plus restrooms, hot showers, a dump station, and a camp store. Bosque Bottoms RV Park in town has full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric) and Wi-Fi. Hackberry Acres in Clifton provides full hookups with 50-amp service and free high-speed Wi-Fi. For dumping or filling fresh water between trips, the Meridian State Park dump station is open to registered campers, and most private parks allow non-guests to dump for a small fee (typically $10 to $15). Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before pulling into the state park so you're set even if your site is water-only.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/meridian/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Meridian?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped today's rentals are. A typical motorhome rental in Meridian sleeps 4 to 8 across a queen bed, convertible dinette, and bunk or sofa beds, with a full kitchen (3-burner propane stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, sink), a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning, and a propane furnace. Most include a TV, and many hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, and generators as add-ons. Campervan rental Meridian options are smaller and more nimble, perfect for couples exploring the Hill Country. Travel trailers and fifth wheels are popular for families because of the extra living space. Check the listing's amenity list and confirm seatbelts match your group size, since only seatbelted seats are safe for travel.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Meridian?
Renting an RV in Meridian gives you a ton of flexibility. Popular add-ons offered by local hosts include camping chairs and tables ($10-$25/trip), bedding and linen packages ($25-$75), generators ($25-$50/day), bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards (huge for Lake Meridian and Lake Whitney), outdoor grills, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is typically at the host's home address or a nearby meet-up point, and many hosts in Bosque and McLennan County offer delivery to Meridian State Park, Lake Whitney State Park, or even your driveway. Mileage policies vary, with daily allowances commonly between 100 and 150 miles, and unlimited-mileage listings available. Pro tip: ask about a kayak add-on if you're heading to Meridian State Park, since Lake Meridian is a peaceful no-wake paddler's paradise.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/meridian/park_activitiesHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is handled entirely through RVezy: you pay with a credit or debit card when you book, and your trip total is processed securely through the platform. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card shortly before pickup, separate from your booking payment, and the amount is set by the host (commonly in the $500 to $1,500 range depending on the RV's value). As long as you return the RV in the same condition with the agreed tank levels and mileage, the hold is released after your trip. To avoid surprises, take time-stamped photos and a short video at both pickup and drop-off, top up the fuel, and follow the host's dump-and-clean instructions. That five-minute habit keeps your deposit safe and your Meridian RV trip stress-free.
