Campgrounds and RV parks near Mountain City, TX

Onion Creek at McKinney Falls State Park offers swimming below limestone ledges, hiking through Hill Country woods, mountain and road biking, geocaching, bouldering, and fishing. The park also preserves an early Texas homestead and a rock shelter, and rangers run birding, geocaching, and Junior Ranger programs. South of Mountain City, the San Marcos River and Blanco River draw tubers, paddlers, and swimmers through the warm months, and downtown San Marcos adds outlet shopping and Texas State University events. North on I-35, downtown Austin puts the state capitol, Zilker Park, Barton Springs, and the Lady Bird Lake trail system within reach. Families staying at RV parks around Buda and Kyle can also visit Jacob's Well and Blue Hole Regional Park in Wimberley for spring-fed swimming.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Mountain City. March through May brings mild temperatures, wildflower blooms, and the highest thunderstorm activity of the year, with May typically the wettest month. October and November cool off, though October remains one of the wetter months, and both are popular for weekend bookings at parks in Buda, Kyle, and San Marcos. Summers are long, hot, and humid. Highs run above 90°F from June through September, and Austin averages roughly 29 days a year at 100°F or hotter, most falling between June and September. Shaded RV sites, hookups with 50-amp service, and pools become priorities. Winters are mild but variable. Most days rise into the 60s, hard freezes are occasional, and snow is rare. Onion Creek at McKinney Falls can flood after heavy rain in any season, and Central Texas is one of the more flash-flood-prone regions in the country, so travelers should monitor forecasts.

Private RV parks near Mountain City generally offer full hookups with water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric, plus Wi-Fi, laundry, and pull-through sites sized for larger rigs. Riverside properties along the San Marcos River trade some highway noise for tree cover and water access. McKinney Falls State Park has 81 campsites, all with water and electric hookups (a 12-site Little Oak loop offers 50-amp service, with the remainder at 30/20-amp), plus six remodeled cabins and a primitive youth camping area. Pets must remain leashed and are not permitted in the water or around cabins, and the entrance gate is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Summer heat is a real factor: expect to run air conditioning most afternoons and evenings, and plan water and shade for pets. Cell coverage is generally strong throughout the Austin to San Marcos corridor.
