Campgrounds near Nixon, Texas
Nixon sits in Gonzales County, Texas, on the rural edge of South Central Texas between San Antonio, Austin, and Victoria. The area is farmland and mesquite country, with the Guadalupe and San Marcos rivers running north and west of town. RV renters use Nixon as a quiet base for exploring the Texas Hill Country, San Antonio missions, and Gonzales history sites without paying big-city park rates.
Most camping in the immediate area is at small, privately owned RV parks with full hookups and long-stay options. Quail Ridge RV Park and Rusty Rocker RV Park sit closest to town, while Gone Fishin RV Park and Boat Ramp and River Acres RV Park give riverfront access for anglers and paddlers. Meadow Lake Resort, over near Seguin, adds a waterfront setting with full hookup RV sites, boat access, and swimming.
For a state park experience, Palmetto State Park lies about an hour from Austin and San Antonio and is the main public campground within reasonable driving distance.
Things to do around Nixon
The Guadalupe and San Marcos rivers anchor most outdoor plans. Fishing, kayaking, and swimming are the standard draws, and Meadow Lake Resort offers boat access, docks, and fishing on the water. Gone Fishin RV Park and Boat Ramp and River Acres RV Park give renters direct river access without hauling a boat far.
Palmetto State Park is the region's headline nature stop. Visitors can paddle, fish or swim in the oxbow lake or the San Marcos River, and look for dwarf palmettos growing under the trees. Easy gravel trails wind through a botanical wonderland featuring dwarf palmettos.
Day trips work well from Nixon. Gonzales offers the "Come and Take It" cannon and downtown historic square, San Antonio and the Alamo sit about an hour west, and Seguin adds small-town shopping and dining.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV trips near Nixon. Days run warm but not extreme, rivers are typically flowing, and campgrounds see their fullest bookings. Texas Parks and Wildlife recommends making overnight reservations at least two to three weeks ahead of time from March to November, which covers the entire busy season for Palmetto and the private parks in the area.
Summer is hot and humid. The warmest month is typically August, with an average high near 96°F, while the coldest month is usually January, with average highs near 63°F. Shaded, riverfront, or lake sites are worth booking early, and renters traveling with kids often plan around morning paddling or swimming and indoor stops during the afternoon peak heat.
Spring severe weather is a real planning factor. April to June is the peak of tornado season in Texas, when warm, humid Gulf air collides with cooler, drier air from the north, and South-Central Texas sees severe thunderstorms producing wind damage and isolated tornadoes. Monitor NWS Austin/San Antonio forecasts and confirm the campground's shelter plan on arrival.
How to book campgrounds near Nixon
Private RV parks in and around Nixon handle their own reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Quail Ridge RV Park, Rusty Rocker RV Park, Gone Fishin RV Park and Boat Ramp, River Acres RV Park, and Meadow Lake Resort all take direct bookings, and third-party listings on RoverPass, Hipcamp, and The Dyrt often mirror availability. Call ahead for big rigs to confirm site length and pull-through access.
For Palmetto State Park, reservations go through Texas Parks and Wildlife. The cabin and campsites can be reserved up to 5 months in advance, while the group camp can be reserved up to 12 months in advance. The park often reaches capacity and recommends reservations for both camping and day use, either online or by calling the customer service center before visiting.
What to expect on the ground
Expect small-town, rural Texas. Nixon itself is a quiet community in Gonzales County with basic groceries, fuel, and a handful of restaurants. Larger services, including hospitals, sit in Gonzales and Seguin. Cell coverage is generally decent along US 87 and TX 97 but can drop on county roads.
Most private parks in the area lean utilitarian: gravel or grass pads, full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, laundry, and Wi-Fi at the better-equipped sites. Pet policies vary by park, so families with larger dogs should call to confirm any campground's pet rules and weight limits before booking.
Bring shade, bug spray, and closed-toe shoes at Palmetto State Park, where the mix of swamp, river, and woodland habitat supports snakes, including venomous species.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Nixon, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Nixon, TX?
RV rental in Nixon, TX is one of the most affordable ways to explore South Central Texas. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, while Class C motorhomes generally run $175 to $275 per night, and luxury Class A motorhomes can be higher. Because Nixon sits in a quieter corner of Gonzales and Wilson counties, well off the I-35 corridor, nightly rates here often come in lower than what you would pay closer to San Antonio or Austin. For the cheapest RV rental in Nixon, look at midweek pickups, shoulder-season dates in March or October, and travel trailers over motorhomes. Filter by Instant Book on RVezy to lock in confirmed pricing fast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nixon%2C%20TexasWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Nixon, Texas?
Good news: for the vast majority of RVs you can rent in Nixon, your regular Class C driver's license is all you need, with no CDL or special endorsement required. The Texas Department of Public Safety only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license for personal RVs over 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, and almost every travel trailer, campervan, and Class C motorhome on RVezy falls well under that threshold. RVezy generally requires renters to be 25 or older, and visiting drivers from other states or countries can drive on their valid home license (international guests should obtain an International Driving Permit before traveling). RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my Nixon RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Nixon, TX booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out on US-87 toward San Antonio with real peace of mind. You (not the host) choose the protection level during checkout to match your comfort and budget, and the plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection so a flat tire on a Gonzales County back road or a minor scrape at a campground does not derail your trip. First-time renters in Nixon especially appreciate this safety net.

You can book your Nixon RV trip with confidence because RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. Hosts cannot override the policy, so the rules are the same whether you rent in Nixon, Seguin, or Gonzales. If severe weather such as a tropical storm or hurricane is heading toward South Texas or the Gulf Coast, contact RVezy support right away and they will help you review your options. If your host cancels, RVezy will refund you or provide travel credits.

Absolutely. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Nixon, TX, so your dog can ride along on the whole adventure. Just enable the Pet-Friendly filter when you search RVezy and you will see every listing that welcomes four-legged guests, along with any pet fees or rules the host has set. Once you are on the road, leashed pets are welcome in Texas State Parks like nearby Palmetto State Park (about 25 minutes north near Gonzales), where they can join you on the trails and along the San Marcos River. Pack a water bowl, current vaccination records, and a tie-out for shaded campsite time.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/palmettoCan the RV be delivered to my campground in the Nixon area?
Yes, RV delivery in Nixon is one of the easiest ways to skip the learning curve, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the rig to your chosen campground, set up the awning, level the trailer, connect water and 30/50 amp power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular drop-off spots include Palmetto State Park near Gonzales and Riverbend RV Park in Seguin. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host for a quote based on mileage. You just show up with groceries and start the trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nixon%2C%20TexasHow far can I travel on a Nixon RV trip, and is there an RV rental with unlimited mileage?
Nixon's location makes it a launchpad for some of Texas's best road trips: San Antonio is about 60 miles west on US-87 (roughly an hour), Austin is around 80 miles north, Corpus Christi and the Gulf Coast are about 140 miles south, and Houston sits roughly 160 miles east. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and some featuring RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer Texas Hill Country or coastal loop. The free miles allowance is shown right on every listing so you can budget before you book. Message the host to discuss added miles for bigger road trips from Nixon.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nixon%2C%20TexasWhere are the best campgrounds near Nixon, TX?
You have a great mix of campgrounds within easy reach of Nixon. Palmetto State Park, about 25 miles north near Gonzales, is a tropical-feeling oasis with shaded RV sites along the San Marcos River and water/electric hookups, generally around $20 per night plus the daily entrance fee. Riverbend RV Park in Seguin and Patriot RV Park in Seguin offer full-hookup convenience near I-10. Hill-Top RV Park in nearby Gonzales has big-rig friendly sites along Highway 97. Book state park sites up to five months ahead through Texas Parks and Wildlife, and reserve private parks a few weeks out for weekends.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/palmettoWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Nixon, TX?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Nixon runs from mid-October through late April, when daytime highs typically sit in the 60s to upper 70s and nights cool into the 40s and 50s. Spring (March to early May) is beautiful with wildflowers along the back roads, while fall offers crisp mornings and fewer mosquitos. July and August are hot in this part of South Texas, with average highs in the mid-90s and heat indexes that can climb past 105°F, so if you are booking summer, prioritize an RV with strong air conditioning and a shaded campsite. Snowbirds love Nixon's mild winters.
weather.gov/ewx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay picking one up in Nixon?
First time renting an RV? You will be in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how the slide-outs, generator, water tanks, propane, and dump valves work, and answering every question. Many Nixon-area hosts also offer delivery and setup at your campground, which removes the learning curve entirely. Nixon itself has wide, flat country roads and easy US-87 access, so you can build confidence before tackling San Antonio's I-410 loop or the Hill Country's twistier routes. You will also have 24/7 roadside assistance and the ability to message your host throughout the trip. Most first-timers tell us it is easier than they expected.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something breaks down during my RV trip from Nixon?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on US-87, a dead battery at Palmetto State Park, or a generator that will not start in the middle of a Gonzales County field, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also just a message away for quick troubleshooting since they know their rig inside out. The nearest larger service centers are in San Antonio (about an hour west) and Victoria (about an hour south), so parts and pros are never far. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before pickup and screenshot your host's contact info just in case.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Nixon RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Yes, you can take your Texas RV rental across state lines into Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, or anywhere else in the continental US, as long as your host approves the route (most are happy to). Message them through the listing before booking to confirm your itinerary and check mileage. Travel into Mexico, however, is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan and insurance do not extend across the border. With Laredo about 160 miles southwest of Nixon, this is worth knowing up front. Stick to US destinations and you have incredible options: Big Bend, the Gulf Coast, or even up to the Ozarks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Nixon RV road trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable on any RV road trip from Nixon, but it is easy to plan for. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans (Class B) hit 14 to 20 mpg, and trucks pulling travel trailers usually return 10 to 14 mpg. Texas gas prices tend to run below the national average, and Nixon has convenient stations along US-87. A round trip to San Antonio (about 120 miles) in a Class C burns roughly $35 to $50 in gas at typical pump prices. Fill up in Nixon or Seguin before heading into pricier metro stations, and check current Texas averages on the EIA website before your trip.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Nixon?
For private RV parks in and around Nixon and Gonzales, two to four weeks ahead is usually plenty, except for major Texas events or holiday weekends. Texas State Parks (including the popular Palmetto State Park) open reservations five months in advance through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and prime weekend sites can sell out within hours of opening. If your dream site is sold out, set a free notification through the reservation system and you will get an email if someone cancels. Weekdays are usually wide open.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around Nixon?
Driving an RV around Nixon is genuinely relaxing compared to bigger Texas metros. US-87 is the main artery, a well-maintained route that handles a steady flow of traffic. Surrounding roads through Gonzales and Wilson counties are flat, straight, and easy on a first-time RV driver, with very few low bridges or tight turns. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk, sudden Gulf-fed thunderstorms in spring, and slow-moving farm equipment on FM (Farm-to-Market) roads. If you are nervous about San Antonio traffic, drive between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to avoid rush hour.
txdot.gov/safety.htmlWhat amenities do campgrounds near Nixon offer for RVers?
Most campgrounds near Nixon are well set up for RVers. Palmetto State Park offers water and 30/50 amp electric sites (no sewer at sites, but a dump station is available on the loop), restrooms with hot showers, and potable water fill stations. Hill-Top RV Park in Gonzales and Riverbend RV Park in Seguin both offer full hookups for big rigs, along with laundry and other conveniences. If you are boondocking, you can typically dump tanks and fill fresh water at most state parks for a small fee, even as a non-camper. Check each park's website for the most current amenity list before you book.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/palmettoWhat's actually inside the RVs available to rent in Nixon?
Most RVs on RVezy near Nixon come fully equipped so you can roll up and start camping. Expect a queen or king bed, bunks or a convertible dinette for extra sleepers, a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Air conditioning is essential in this part of Texas and standard on virtually every listing. Many include a TV, propane, generator, outdoor awning, and camp chairs, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots, bedding/linen packages, and full kitchen kits. Every listing page shows the exact sleeps count, seatbelt count (important for kids), and amenities, so you can match the rig to your family RV trip Nixon plans.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nixon%2C%20TexasWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect for my Nixon RV rental?
Hosts in the Nixon area offer plenty of helpful add-ons to customize your motorhome rental Nixon experience: bedding and towel packages, camp chairs and outdoor mats, propane tanks, extra generator hours, bike racks, and even fishing gear for nearby lakes. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Nixon, but RV delivery to local campgrounds and even your driveway is widely available, with a per-mile delivery fee set by each host. Mileage policies vary; many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extras charged per mile beyond that. Everything is listed clearly on each RVezy listing before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nixon%2C%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Nixon?
Booking is straightforward: you pay through RVezy's secure platform with a credit or debit card (never cash to the host), and your total includes the nightly rate, protection plan, service fees, and any add-ons you have selected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, typically shortly before pickup, and is released after the trip assuming the RV comes back clean, undamaged, and per the host's fuel and tank requirements. To avoid deposit issues, document the RV's condition with photos at pickup and dropoff, empty the black and gray tanks at a dump station (Palmetto State Park has one), and refill propane and fuel as your host requires.
