Camping near Point Comfort, Texas
Point Comfort sits on the north shore of Lavaca Bay on the Texas Central Coast, part of the greater Matagorda Bay system in Calhoun County. The town is a small industrial port, and most RV camping options cluster a short drive south around Port Lavaca and along the bay shoreline, with additional coastal sites toward Magnolia Beach and Indianola.
RV travelers use Point Comfort as a bayfront base for fishing, birding, and beach days without the heavier crowds of Galveston or Corpus Christi. Waterfront parks such as Lighthouse Beach RV Park put sites directly on Lavaca Bay, while Port Lavaca / Matagorda Bay KOA Holiday offers a full-service option a short drive from town.
Inland alternatives include Texas Lakeside RV Resort on Lake Texana, and coastal choices like Magnolia Beach RV Park sit on the open Gulf-facing shell beach. Live Oak Point RV Resort rounds out the nearby options for travelers willing to move further along the coast.
Things to do around Point Comfort
Fishing drives most trips here. Anglers target speckled trout, redfish, and flounder from bay piers and boat launches, with Lighthouse Beach RV Park offering a lighted fishing pier and boat ramp on Lavaca Bay. Kayaking is popular in the sheltered bays around Indianola and Port O'Connor.
Birders can follow the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, which runs through the area and includes stops at bayfront parks and wetlands boardwalks. Day trips reach Aransas National Wildlife Refuge to the south, Matagorda Bay Nature Park to the east, and Goose Island State Park down the coast.
Families use bay beaches at Lighthouse Beach and Magnolia Beach for shell-collecting, wading, and sunset views. Historic sites in Port Lavaca and the Calhoun County Museum round out rainy-day plans.

The Central Texas coast is a shoulder-season destination. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable temperatures for camping, with warm days, cooler nights, and lower humidity than mid-summer. Wildflowers, migrating songbirds, and shorebirds move through the bay marshes in April and again in September and October.
Summer runs hot and humid, with afternoon highs regularly in the low 90s Fahrenheit. Sea breezes off Matagorda Bay temper the heat at waterfront sites, but inland parks feel noticeably warmer. This is also peak family-vacation season, and coastal RV parks book well ahead for weekends.
Atlantic hurricane season on the Texas coast runs from June through November, with the highest risk of tropical systems in August and September. Winters are mild, drawing snowbirds to full-hookup parks for extended stays, though occasional cold fronts push overnight lows near freezing and bring strong north winds across the bay.
How to book a campsite
Private RV parks around Point Comfort typically take reservations directly through their websites or through booking platforms such as Campspot, Good Sam, and KOA's own portal. Lighthouse Beach RV Park uses an online reservation system managed by the City of Port Lavaca. Port Lavaca / Matagorda Bay KOA Holiday books through the KOA website and operates year-round.
Texas state parks in the region, including Goose Island and Lake Texana, use the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system. Texas has one of the shortest booking windows of any major state park system at just 5 months, with reservations opening on a rolling basis at 8:00 AM Central Time. A campsite reservation does not include the day-use entry fee, so travelers need day passes per person or a Texas State Parks Pass for annual entry.
What to expect on arrival
Sites on the bay are generally level with concrete or gravel pads and 30/50-amp full hookups. Waterfront parks typically offer water and sewer connections, paved pads, restrooms, hot showers, and laundry facilities. KOA sites add patios and cabin options for mixed groups.
Coastal humidity, salt air, and biting insects are constants. Bring bug spray, awning tie-downs for gusty bay winds, and extra fresh-water rinse gear if traveling with kayaks or fishing tackle. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Port Lavaca and thins out toward remote beach access points.
Groceries, fuel, marine supplies, and boat launches are all available within a short drive in Port Lavaca. Point Comfort itself is a quiet residential and industrial town, so most services sit on the south side of the bay.
