Campgrounds and RV parks near Port Lavaca, TX

Fishing is the headline activity. Anglers work the piers, jetties, and flats of Lavaca and Matagorda bays for redfish, speckled trout, flounder, black drum, and catfish, and boat ramps are plentiful along the shoreline. The 900-foot lighted pier at Lighthouse Beach is open around the clock and the adjacent wetlands boardwalk is a good spot for shorebirds and wading birds. Magnolia Beach and nearby Indianola offer flat, drive-on crushed-shell beaches suitable for kayaking, wade fishing, and beachcombing. The Calhoun County Museum and the La Salle monument at Indianola cover local history, and Port Lavaca sits on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, with dolphin sightings common in the bay.

Port Lavaca campgrounds operate year-round, and the shoulder seasons are the most comfortable for RV travel. Spring, from March through May, brings warm days, active fishing, and manageable humidity, while fall from late September into November offers cooler nights once the first cold fronts push through. Weekends around holidays and spring break fill early. Summer runs hot and humid, with highs near 90 and heavy afternoon humidity off the Gulf. It is also Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 through November 30, with peak tropical activity in August and September. Travelers should watch National Hurricane Center advisories and plan for possible evacuations if a storm approaches Matagorda Bay.
