Portland camping overview
Portland sits on the north shore of Corpus Christi Bay in San Patricio County, connected to Corpus Christi by the Harbor Bridge on US-181. The town is a practical base for RV travelers who want bay access without staying downtown, with quick reach to Rockport, Aransas Pass, and the Port Aransas ferry. Corpus Christi Bay waterfront sits about five minutes away, downtown Corpus Christi about fifteen minutes, and Padre Island National Seashore roughly thirty minutes by road.
RV options cluster on both sides of the bridge. On the Portland side, Corpus Christi Boardwalk RV Park and Sea Breeze RV Park put renters within reach of bay-front paths, while Puerto Del Sol RV Park and The Boat House RV Park sit closer to the water on the Corpus Christi side. Gregory RV Park, just north in Gregory, offers an inland alternative popular with longer-stay guests.
The region features flat coastal terrain with elevations typically under 50 feet, making for accessible sites throughout. Expect open coastal grasslands, minimal shade, and steady bay breezes at most parks.
Things to do near Portland
Sunset Lake Park in Portland has boardwalks, birding platforms, and shoreline trails along Nueces Bay, and the town's Indian Point Pier is a well-known spot for redfish, trout, and flounder. RV camping around Corpus Christi Bay puts kayaking and biking around Mustang Island State Park, boating and windsurfing along the Laguna Madre, and fishing in the coastal lagoons within easy reach.
Across the bridge, families can reach the Texas State Aquarium, the USS Lexington museum ship, and North Beach in under twenty minutes. Off-road capable rigs can seek out quieter spots or park directly on the beach at Padre Island National Seashore. Port Aransas, reached by a free 24-hour ferry from Aransas Pass, adds jetty fishing, dolphin cruises, and sand-driving beaches to the itinerary.

The Coastal Bend has a long RV season. Sites can book up fast over summer and holiday weekends, but mild winter temperatures make camping enjoyable year-round. Winter Texans arrive in force from November through March, filling monthly sites at many Portland and Gregory parks well ahead of time.
Spring brings the strongest coastal winds and heavy Spring Break traffic on the beaches through mid-March. Steady onshore winds are common, especially during spring and early summer months, when gusts regularly exceed 20 mph at waterfront camping areas. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon Gulf storms common.
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in August and September. September is also the wettest month locally. Parks stay open year-round in normal conditions, but Padre Island National Seashore and Mustang Island State Park may close temporarily when tropical storms threaten, so renters should monitor the National Hurricane Center before booking late-summer trips.

How to book near Portland
Private RV parks in and around Portland, including Corpus Christi Boardwalk RV Park, Sea Breeze RV Park, Puerto Del Sol RV Park, Gregory RV Park, and The Boat House RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Nightly, weekly, and monthly rates are common, and many parks require a deposit at booking. Snowbird demand pushes November through March monthly sites to fill first, often several months in advance.
For state parks in the area, including Mustang Island, Goose Island, and Lake Corpus Christi, reservations run through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reservation portal or by phone, with a five-month rolling booking window that opens at 8 a.m. Central. Padre Island National Seashore handles developed campground reservations on Recreation.gov, while primitive beach camping there is first-come, first-served with a permit obtained at the entrance station.
What to expect on-site
Most Portland-area private parks offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, on-site laundry, Wi-Fi, and pull-through options for larger rigs. Bay-side parks tend to sit close to the water with good dog-walking areas and bird watching, and several have pools open through the mild winter. Shade is limited across the Coastal Bend, so awnings and reflective covers are worth packing.
Cell coverage is generally strong on both sides of the bay because of the Corpus Christi metro. Grocery, fuel, and propane are easy to find along US-181 in Portland and Gregory. Wind is the main variable to plan for: gusts above 20 mph are common at waterfront sites, especially in spring and early summer, so level, chock, and secure loose gear on arrival.

Great news for first-time renters, a regular Class C Texas driver's license, or any equivalent state or international license, is all you need to rent an RV in Portland, TX. The Texas Department of Public Safety only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license for personal RVs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, which is far heavier than virtually every RVezy rental in the area. Visiting from abroad, grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before flying into Corpus Christi International Airport and you are road-ready.

It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection so you can focus on Gulf sunsets instead of worst-case scenarios.
