Camping near Rockdale, Texas
Rockdale sits in Milam County in Central Texas, roughly an hour northeast of Austin along US-79 and within reach of Bryan-College Station and Waco. The area is flat to gently rolling post oak country, with elevations mostly between 300 and 500 feet, and the San Gabriel and Little rivers draining the region toward the Brazos.
RV travelers staying close to town have a handful of full-hookup options. Rockdale RV Park and Shady Grove RV Park are established, year-round parks with 30/50-amp service set up for big rigs. Cosmic Duck RV Park sits nearby, and Downtown Texas RV Park offers full-hookup sites on the San Gabriel River between Thorndale and Rockdale, adjacent to the Apache Pass event area. Cameron Eclipse Park, in nearby Cameron, rounds out the local list.
For a lake trip, Granger Lake, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the San Gabriel River, is the closest public-land destination, with developed and primitive campgrounds within a short drive.
Things to do around Rockdale
Water recreation is the main draw. Granger Lake, managed by the Fort Worth District of the Corps of Engineers, offers fishing (crappie and white bass are local favorites), boating, swimming, and the Comanche Bluff Hiking Trail out of Taylor Park. Wilson H. Fox Park is a popular access point for anglers, with two boat ramps and a fishing dock.
In town, Rockdale's small historic downtown includes the International-Great Northern Railroad Depot Museum and Fair Park, which hosts rodeos at the Fair Park Rodeo Arena. Apache Pass, on the Little River east of town, offers tubing, kayaking, fishing, and rentals.
Day trips are easy: Austin is about an hour southwest for city attractions, and Bryan-College Station is roughly 45 minutes northeast for Aggie sports and events.
