Camping near Runge, Texas
Runge sits in southeastern Karnes County at the junction of State Highway 72, east of the San Antonio River and about nine miles east of Kenedy. The small town is roughly an hour southeast of San Antonio, in the Rio Grande plain region between the Alamo and La Bahía. The surrounding landscape is rolling ranch country crossed by oil and gas roads, with easy access to the historic corridor along U.S. 181 to the west and U.S. 59 to the east.
RV travelers typically base themselves at private parks in and around Kenedy and Karnes City, then day-trip to Goliad State Park and the surrounding Spanish colonial missions. Options in the immediate area include Kenedy Texas Country RV Park and Ranch, Pecan Grove RV Resort, and Texas Starr RV Park, all clustered within a short drive of Runge.
For a state-park experience with river access and hiking, the Karankawa loop at Goliad State Park and the nearby Angels in Goliad RV Park sit about 40 minutes to the south, on the San Antonio River outside Goliad.
Things to do near Runge
Goliad State Park is the main outdoor draw within easy reach. The park protects Mission Espíritu Santo and offers hiking, fishing, and a 6.6-mile paddling trail on the San Antonio River. Canoes and kayaks are not rented on site, so bring gear or arrange rentals ahead of time.
History travelers can string together the Presidio La Bahía, the birthplace of General Ignacio Zaragoza, and the courthouse museum complex at Old Helena in Karnes County. Panna Maria, considered the oldest permanent Polish settlement in the United States, and the church at Cestohowa are short drives from Runge.
Spring visitors often plan around Kenedy's Bluebonnet Days in April, when wildflowers peak across county roads and ranch fencelines.

South Texas has a long shoulder season that makes Runge a strong cool-weather RV destination. Late fall through early spring brings mild days, cool nights, and lower bug pressure, which is why Goliad State Park sites book heaviest from December through March, the park's busiest window. Wildflower season peaks in March and April, with bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush along ranch roads and river bottoms.
Summer is hot and humid. August is the warmest month at nearby Beeville, the closest long-record station, with average highs in the mid-90s Fahrenheit. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and shaded sites along the San Antonio River are worth targeting.
Late summer and early fall coincide with Atlantic hurricane season. September is the wettest month in the region, and rising river levels can close the paddling dock and low-water crossings at Goliad State Park, so check park alerts before departure. Winter is short, with occasional freezes but rarely any lasting snow.
How to book campgrounds near Runge
Goliad State Park sites, including the RV loop at Karankawa, are booked through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reservation system, with the same inventory shown on ReserveAmerica. The booking window opens up to five months in advance, and popular weekends in winter and spring fill early. No-shows are cancelled at noon the day after the scheduled arrival, so call the park or customer service if arrival will be late.
Private parks near Runge, including Kenedy Texas Country RV Park and Ranch, Pecan Grove RV Resort, Texas Starr RV Park, and Angels in Goliad RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Oilfield traffic in Karnes County can tighten weekday availability at private parks, so weekday holds are worth locking in early even outside peak season.
What to expect on the ground
Expect flat to gently rolling country, mesquite and live oak cover, and long stretches between fuel stops once off the main highways. Cell coverage is generally reliable along US 181 and SH 72 but can thin out on ranch roads. The Karankawa camping area at Goliad State Park has pull-through sites sized for larger rigs, with full hookups available.
Bugs are a real factor from late spring through early fall. Mosquitoes are heaviest along the river during rainy months, so pack repellent and consider a screen room. Summer heat indices can push well past 100, so shaded sites, awnings, and running AC on shore power matter.
The park gate at Goliad opens at 8 a.m. and locks at 10 p.m., which is worth planning around for late arrivals.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy on every reservation (hosts don't set their own), and it includes a grace period after you book so you can plan with confidence. The exact refund depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a named storm or natural disaster impacts your Runge trip, RVezy support is there to help you figure out next steps, which matters in South Texas where Gulf hurricanes can occasionally reshape plans in late summer. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs for deer season, then use that grace window to fine-tune your dates.

Karnes County is wide-open ranch country, and dogs love the room to roam along the San Antonio River corridor near Goliad State Park, about 35 miles southeast. Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee (typically $25 to $75), which you'll see clearly on the listing before you book. Pro tip: pack a tie-out stake and a collapsible water bowl, South Texas afternoons get hot, and shady mesquite-covered campsites are your dog's best friend.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/goliadCan the RV be delivered to my campground or property near Runge?
Yes, RV delivery in Runge is one of the easiest ways to skip the learning curve entirely. Many hosts in the area will tow or drive your rig directly to your campsite, hunting lease, family ranch, or even a driveway in town, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. This is a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV or if you've booked a spot at a local RV park or a private deer lease in Karnes County. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, message the host with your address, and they'll quote a delivery fee based on mileage.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038076414-Delivery-optionsHow does mileage work on a Runge RV rental and how far can I go?
Most hosts in Runge include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day) with reasonable per-mile rates after that, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is great for longer South Texas loops. From Runge you're roughly 70 miles southeast of San Antonio, 90 miles north of Corpus Christi, 50 miles to Goliad State Park, and about 230 miles to South Padre Island. For a typical 5-night RV road trip from Runge hitting two or three of those spots, 500 to 700 included miles is usually plenty. Pro tip: check the mileage policy on the listing page before booking and message the host if you're planning a bigger loop.
rvezy.com/Where are the best campgrounds near Runge, TX?
You've got great options within easy driving distance for RV camping near Runge. Choke Canyon State Park (about an hour west) is a favorite for fishing and wide open Texas sky. Goliad State Park, 35 miles southeast, has shaded sites along the San Antonio River and the historic Mission Espiritu Santo on-site. Coleto Creek Reservoir Park near Victoria is another gem for bass anglers, and Lake Corpus Christi State Park offers full waterfront camping about 75 miles south. Pro tip: Texas state parks book up fast for spring and fall weekends, reserve as soon as you've confirmed your RV.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/choke-canyonWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Runge?
The sweet spot for a Runge RV trip is mid-October through April, when South Texas trades its hot summer for crisp mornings and 70-degree afternoons, perfect for hiking, dove and deer hunting, and exploring without melting. Winter highs typically stay in the 60s and 70s with only rare freezes, making January and February pleasant for snowbirds heading to the coast. Spring wildflower season in March and April lights up the roadsides with bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush. Summer (June through September) brings 95F+ days and high humidity, so if you visit then, look for a motorhome rental in Runge with strong roof AC and plan early-morning drives.
weather.gov/crp/I've never rented an RV before. How does it work in Runge?

After you book, your host messages you to coordinate pickup or delivery, then walks you through every system at handover: slides, awning, propane, water hookups, dump valves, and generator. They'll answer questions, share local tips, and leave you their number. RVezy's 24/7 support and roadside assistance ride along on every trip, so if something feels off late at night at a campsite near Goliad, help is one call away. Pro tip: ask your host for a short test drive in an empty parking lot before pulling onto US-181.

You're covered: every RVezy booking in Runge includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on US-181, a dead battery at Choke Canyon, or a stuck slide-out at midnight all have a real person on the other end of the phone. The renter protection plan handles most damage situations, and the RVezy support team is reachable around the clock before, during, and after your trip. Your host is also your local expert and usually responds quickly to messages. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before you leave Runge, cell service can get spotty out on the ranch roads between Karnes City and Goliad.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Runge RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Cross-state travel is generally welcome, many guests take their Runge RV rental on road trips to Louisiana, New Mexico, or up to Oklahoma without issues, just confirm with your host when you book. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan and roadside assistance don't extend across the border. Popular interstate routes from Runge include the Gulf Coast run to New Orleans (about 8 hours), Big Bend National Park (8 to 9 hours west), and Hill Country loops through Fredericksburg. Pro tip: message your host with your route before booking so they can confirm mileage and any specifics.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Runge RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, so plan smart. Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A diesels run 7 to 10 MPG. Texas typically has some of the lowest gas prices in the country, which is great news for your campervan or motorhome budget in Runge. For a 500-mile loop in a Class C at 10 MPG with gas around $3.00, you're looking at roughly $150 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Kenedy or Karnes City where prices tend to beat the smaller stations along the rural FM roads.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Runge?
For Texas state parks like Goliad, Choke Canyon, and Lake Corpus Christi, book through the Texas Parks & Wildlife reservation system as soon as your RV is confirmed, especially for spring break (March), Easter weekend, Thanksgiving, and any fall hunting-season weekend. The system opens reservations up to 5 months ahead, and prime sites at Choke Canyon vanish within hours of going live. Private parks like Rocky Top RV Park in Runge and K C RV Park in Karnes City are usually easier, often available a week or two out. Pro tip: if state parks are full, search county and city RV parks along US-181, they're often overlooked gems with hookups and great rates.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Runge?
Driving around Runge is genuinely easy: rural two-lane highways like US-181 and SH-72 have light traffic, generous shoulders, and gentle terrain, ideal for anyone new to handling a larger rig. The main things to watch for are sudden cattle or deer crossings (especially at dawn and dusk), occasional oilfield trucks tied to the Eagle Ford Shale, and afternoon thunderstorms in spring that can drop heavy rain fast. Heading toward San Antonio on I-37 or I-10 ramps up traffic, so plan urban arrivals outside rush hour. Winter ice is extremely rare. Pro tip: keep an eye on the Texas Department of Transportation's DriveTexas.org for real-time road conditions before any longer Runge RV trip.
drivetexas.org/What amenities do campgrounds near Runge offer?
Most campgrounds within an hour of Runge offer full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer at the site), which makes RV life simple. Local private RV parks in Karnes City typically provide full hookups plus laundry and WiFi. Texas state parks like Goliad and Choke Canyon usually offer water and electric at the site with central dump stations and potable water fill near the entrance. Most parks have hot showers, picnic tables, and fire rings. Pro tip: South Texas burn bans are common in dry months, check Karnes County's current burn-ban status with the county judge's office before planning a campfire, and bring a propane fire pit as a reliable backup.
tfsweb.tamu.edu/burnbans/What's typically included inside the RV when I rent in Runge?

Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often add a TV, generator, outdoor speakers, and an awning, while campervan rentals in Runge keep it compact and nimble. Many hosts include starter kits with linens, kitchenware, and toilet chemicals; others offer them as add-ons. Each listing spells out exactly what's included, and seatbelts are clearly listed by count. Pro tip: confirm generator hours and whether bedding is included before you book, that's where surprises usually hide.
rvezy.com/What add-ons and options can I get with my Runge RV rental?
Hosts in Runge offer a great menu of add-ons to customize your trip: camp chairs and tables, bike racks, generators, propane fire pits, bedding and kitchen kits, Starlink or hotspot WiFi, and dump-and-clean services so you can hand the RV back without lifting a finger. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on for Runge guests heading to deer leases or remote ranch sites. Pickup and drop-off are usually at the host's home base in or near Karnes County, with flexible times you arrange by message. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you're planning to boondock on a friend's ranch outside town, off-grid power transforms the experience.
rvezy.com/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through the RVezy platform: you pay securely online when you book (no cash exchanged with the host), and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card shortly before pickup. The deposit covers things like unreported damage or returning the RV without the agreed fuel or propane level, and it's released back to you after the trip ends if everything checks out. To breeze through it, do a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, return the rig clean, and top off the fuel tank like you found it. Pro tip: keep all receipts from your Runge fuel stops in case any question comes up later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Runge?
Runge sits in a sweet spot for short, scenic drives. Goliad State Park and its 18th-century Spanish mission is just 35 miles southeast, perfect for a weekend. San Antonio and the River Walk are 70 miles northwest, about 90 minutes. Port Aransas and Mustang Island beaches are about 130 miles south, roughly 2.5 hours, ideal for a coastal Runge RV trip with family.
