Campgrounds and RV parks near San Leanna, TX

McKinney Falls State Park is the anchor outdoor activity. The park lies at the confluence of Onion Creek and Williamson Creek, with scenic upper and lower falls. Visitors can camp, hike, mountain or road bike, geocache, go bouldering, picnic, fish, and swim in Onion Creek. Onion Creek can flood after rainfall, so contact the park for current creek conditions before planning a swim day. Beyond the park, San Leanna puts renters within a short drive of South Austin food and music venues, Barton Springs Pool, and Zilker Park. Hill Country day trips west toward Dripping Springs and Wimberley are practical from any of the nearby RV parks, as is a run south to San Marcos for the river and outlet shopping.

Central Texas has a long warm season. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, cooler nights, and greener landscapes. Wildflowers peak in April along roadsides west of the city. Fall is the wettest season locally, and winter is the driest, and storms can be intense but usually short. Summer brings sustained heat. Most summer days in Austin heat up to at least 90 degrees, and temperatures reach 100 degrees or more on an average of 29 days a year. RV renters should plan for heavy air-conditioning use, shaded sites where possible, and early-morning hikes. Onion Creek levels drop through summer, though flash flooding remains possible after storms. Winter is mild by national standards. Austin normally sees just one day each winter when the temperature does not rise above freezing, though hard freezes can occasionally affect water hookups for a day or two. Weekends outside peak spring and fall are easier to book on short notice.

McKinney Falls State Park has 81 campsites, all with water and electric hookups, six newly remodeled cabins, and a primitive youth camping area for nonprofit-sponsored youth groups. Clean bathroom facilities are within walking distance of all campsites, with showers available in some restroom buildings. The park office is open from 8:00am to 4:15pm, the gate is open from 8am to 10pm, and late arrivals must call the park before 4:15pm on the arrival date for late arrival instructions. A 14-day in, 14-day out rule applies to reservable sites, and pets must remain on a leash and are not allowed to swim. Private RV parks in and around San Leanna, Buda, and south Austin typically offer full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi, with fewer natural amenities than the state park. Expect highway noise at parks close to I-35 and quieter conditions at those set back from the corridor.
