Campgrounds near Sheridan, Texas
Sheridan is a small unincorporated community in Colorado County, southeast Texas, sitting on U.S. Highway 90-A about 20 minutes south of Interstate 10, between San Antonio and Houston. It lies roughly one hour west of Katy and Sugar Land, and about an hour and a half south of Austin. That location makes it a practical overnight or weekend stop for RV renters crossing the I-10 corridor or heading toward the Gulf Coast.
The area's best-known RV destination is Splashway Water Park and RV, a family-oriented resort in Sheridan that combines a full-service RV campground with an on-site waterpark. Nearby options include Whispering Oaks RV Park, Iron Horse RV Resort, Colorado River RV Campground along the river, and Waldo's Camp for quieter stays. Most parks in the immediate area cater to big rigs with full hookups.
RVers who want state park camping typically drive north to Stephen F. Austin State Park near San Felipe, roughly an hour away, which offers full-hookup and water-only sites in bottomland hardwood forest along the Brazos River.
Things to do around Sheridan
The main draw for families is Splashway Water Park and RV, which sits inside the campground. The waterpark includes high-thrill rides, a lazy river, a large wave pool, and dedicated toddler areas, plus on-property activities like kayaking, playgrounds, pedal boating, nature walking, biking, and catch-and-release fishing.
Off-site, the Colorado River runs through the county and supports fishing, kayaking, and paddling. Colorado River RV Campground provides direct river access for renters bringing kayaks or fishing gear.
Day trips within reasonable driving distance include Stephen F. Austin State Park near San Felipe with hiking trails through bottomland forest, the historic town of Columbus with its restored 19th-century courthouse square, and Brazos Bend State Park farther east, known for alligator sightings and prairie trails.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV camping around Sheridan. Daytime highs sit in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, humidity is moderate, and campground demand is high but manageable. Wildflowers bloom across the coastal plain in March and April, and fall offers a shoulder-season window after summer crowds drop off.
Summer is peak season for Splashway and other family parks because the waterpark is fully open. Expect heat, high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Burn bans are common during summer months, so campers relying on fire rings should confirm status with the county before arrival. Book weekends and holidays well in advance.
Winter is mild, with occasional cold fronts but rare hard freezes. Many RV parks stay open year-round, and Splashway's campground remains open throughout the year even when the waterpark itself is closed for the season. Late summer and early fall carry the highest flash-flood and hurricane risk on the Gulf Coastal Plain, so monitor forecasts if traveling June through November.
Booking and reservation tips
Private parks in the Sheridan area, including Splashway Water Park and RV, Whispering Oaks RV Park, Iron Horse RV Resort, Colorado River RV Campground, and Waldo's Camp, take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Splashway does not require a minimum stay Sunday through Thursday, but weekends require a two-night booking with a Friday check-in, and holidays carry a three-night minimum on cabin, cottage, RV, and tent site reservations. Summer weekends fill weeks ahead.
For Texas state parks in the region, reservations go through Texas Parks and Wildlife and can be made up to five months in advance for most campsites. Day-use entry can also sell out on weekends, so purchase a day pass in advance when planning a park visit. Pet policies vary; confirm restrictions when booking.
What to expect on arrival
Sheridan itself is a small rural community with limited services. Expect a gas station and a few local eateries, with fuller grocery and supply runs available in Hallettsville, Columbus, or El Campo. Cell coverage is generally reliable along Highway 90-A but can thin out on back roads.
At Splashway, the RV park accommodates large rigs with 30- and 50-amp sites, full electrical, water, and sewer connections, and a mix of pull-through and back-in sites. Reviewers note that some sites are not perfectly level and that tree canopy can be tight for taller rigs, so it is worth being specific about rig length and slide count at the time of reservation.
The surrounding terrain is flat to gently rolling coastal prairie, not Hill Country. Roads into the private parks are paved or well-graded gravel, and access is straightforward for standard rental motorhomes and travel trailers.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Sheridan, TX
How much does an RV rental in Sheridan, TX typically cost?
RV rental in Sheridan, TX is one of the most affordable ways to experience the Texas Gulf Coast region and the nearby Splashway Waterpark. Travel trailers usually run between $90 and $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $285, and Class A coaches typically start around $250 to $350. For a cheap RV rental in Sheridan that still has full hookups, look at compact travel trailers booked midweek or in shoulder seasons like March or October. Pro tip: lock in your dates 2 to 3 months before any Splashway weekend or Houston event, since the small inventory in this rural Colorado County town disappears fast. Many hosts also offer weekly and monthly discounts on longer stays.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sheridan%2C%20TexasDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Sheridan, TX?
Good news: a regular Class C driver's license, which is what most U.S. drivers already carry, is all you need to rent an RV in Sheridan and drive almost anything on the RVezy platform. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license if the RV's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) exceeds 26,000 pounds, which covers a small slice of very large motorcoaches. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for personal recreational use. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you are set for your Sheridan RV trip.

Every RV rental in Sheridan, TX booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built into the reservation, so you are covered from the moment you leave the host's driveway. You select your protection level during checkout (not the host), choosing the coverage tier that fits your trip. Roadside assistance covers flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, fuel delivery, and towing, which matters on rural Texas stretches between Sheridan and bigger cities like Houston or San Antonio. While this is not traditional auto insurance, it provides real financial protection so you can focus on enjoying your Sheridan RV trip with confidence.

Plans change, and booking an RV rental in Sheridan should not feel risky. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you have breathing room if something shifts. Refund outcomes depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. For peace of mind during Gulf Coast hurricane season (June through November), review the full cancellation details on the RVezy Help Center before booking. Pro tip: message the host with any flexibility questions before you confirm so you start your Sheridan trip planning with total confidence.

Yes, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rentals in Sheridan, and it's one of the best ways to vacation with your four-legged crew. Just filter for 'Pet-Friendly' on RVezy when searching, and you'll see listings that welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Splashway Campground is dog-friendly with leashed pets allowed throughout the campground areas, and most parks in the surrounding Colorado County countryside have grassy spots perfect for morning walks. Bring a tie-out lead, collapsible water bowl, and waste bags. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size guidelines, and ask if they provide a pet mat to make cleanup easier on everyone.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/petsCan the RV be delivered directly to my campsite in Sheridan?
Yes, RV delivery in Sheridan is a popular option, especially for first-timers heading to Splashway Waterpark and Campground. Many RVezy hosts will drive the RV to your campsite, level it, hook up water, power, and sewer, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter for 'Delivery' when you search to see which hosts offer it and their per-mile rate. Splashway Campground and nearby parks around Columbus typically accept delivered rentals; confirm with the campground before booking. Pro tip: book delivery and pickup on the same trip so you can skip towing entirely and spend your whole vacation enjoying the wave pool.
splashwaywaterpark.com/camping/How does mileage work on a Sheridan RV rental and how far can I drive?
Hosts set their own mileage policy, and on RVezy you'll see the daily mileage allowance and overage rate clearly displayed on every listing before you book. Typical packages in Sheridan offer 100 to 150 free miles per day, with some hosts offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. From Sheridan you're 90 miles west of Houston, 145 miles east of San Antonio, 130 miles southeast of Austin, and about 175 miles from Galveston's Gulf Coast beaches. Pro tip: if you're planning a Texas Triangle loop through Houston, Austin, and San Antonio, message hosts about unlimited-mileage add-ons before booking. The savings often outweigh the daily fee.

You have great options for RV camping in Sheridan. Splashway Waterpark and Campground is the headline spot, with full hookups, big-rig sites, cabins, and direct access to the waterpark's large wave pool. Colorado River RV Park in Columbus (about 30 miles north) offers riverside camping with full hookups along I-10. Stephen F. Austin State Park near Sealy provides shaded sites, hiking, and a Texas State Parks reservation system that books up to 5 months ahead. splashwaywaterpark.com/camping/When is the best time to visit Sheridan, TX in an RV?
Sheridan has a humid subtropical climate, so the sweet spot for a Sheridan RV trip is March through May and again from late September through November, when daytime highs sit in the 70s and 80s with more comfortable humidity. Summer (June through August) is hot, with highs in the low to mid 90s and high humidity, but it is also peak Splashway season. Winters are mild, with daytime highs often in the 60s and only rare freezes, making this a snowbird-friendly destination. Pro tip: October weekends often offer great weather, fewer crowds, and seasonal events at Splashway.
weather.gov/hgx/I'm a first-time RV renter. Is Sheridan a good place to start?
Sheridan is actually one of the easiest places in Texas for first time renting an RV. The town sits on flat coastal-plain terrain off US-90A, with wide rural roads, light traffic, and easy access to I-10 just 20 minutes north. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup that walks you through the generator, slide-outs, tanks, propane, and hookups, so you're never figuring things out alone. Many hosts also offer delivery, which means the rig is set up and waiting when you arrive at Splashway or Sageville RV Park. Pro tip: book a travel trailer or Class C for your first trip. They're easier to drive than full-size Class A coaches.
txdot.gov/safety.htmlWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV during the trip?
You are never on your own. Every Sheridan RV rental booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with your protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app and can usually troubleshoot small issues like AC, fridge, or slide-out questions over the phone. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. The nearest hospitals are in El Campo (about 25 minutes) and Columbus (about 30 minutes), with Houston roughly 90 minutes east. Pro tip: take photos of the RV at pickup and save your host's number to your contacts before you leave.

Sheridan's location between Houston, Austin, and San Antonio makes it an ideal launchpad for an RV road trip from Sheridan. Head east about 90 miles to Houston for Space Center Houston and Galveston Bay; west about 145 miles to San Antonio for the River Walk and Mission Trail; or north about 130 miles to Austin for Lady Bird Lake and live music. For nature, drive about 200 miles south to Padre Island National Seashore, or about 110 miles southwest to Goliad State Park. Cross-border travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage limits. Pro tip: the Texas Hill Country wineries near Fredericksburg make a perfect 3-day loop from Sheridan.
traveltexas.com/places-to-go/regionsWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what's gas like near Sheridan?
Texas has some of the lowest fuel prices in the country, which is great news for your budget. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A coaches around 6 to 10 MPG on diesel or gas, campervans 14 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 15 MPG combined). For a typical 3-day Sheridan getaway with 200 miles of driving, budget around $80 to $140 in fuel. The nearest fuel stops are along I-10 in Columbus and along US-59 in Hallettsville and Edna. Pro tip: fuel up before leaving I-10, where stations are bigger and easier to navigate with a long rig.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Sheridan?
Booking early is the move, especially since Sheridan's biggest draw is Splashway Waterpark and Campground, which fills up fast. For summer weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, reserve at Splashway 8 to 12 weeks ahead through their website. Holiday weekends (July 4, Labor Day) often sell out months in advance and may require multi-night minimums. For smaller nearby RV parks, 2 to 3 weeks ahead is usually enough. Texas State Parks within driving distance (like Stephen F. Austin State Park) book through Texas Parks and Wildlife up to 5 months ahead. Pro tip: midweek arrivals open up the best site selection.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Sheridan, TX?
Driving an RV around Sheridan is refreshingly relaxed compared to big-city Texas. The town sits on flat coastal prairie with straight, two-lane roads like US-90A and easy access to I-10 about 20 minutes north. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk, slow-moving farm equipment in rural sections, and summer thunderstorms that can roll in fast off the Gulf. Heavy rain can cause low-water crossings in Colorado County to flood briefly. Hurricane season runs June through November, so check the forecast before any Gulf-leaning trip. Pro tip: avoid Houston's I-10 corridor during weekday rush hours (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.) if you're connecting east toward Katy or Sugar Land.
drivetexas.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Sheridan?
Campgrounds near Sheridan generally offer the full RV-camping experience. Splashway Campground has full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, big-rig pull-throughs, a dump station, fishing ponds, and direct waterpark access. Nearby parks around Columbus on I-10 offer full hookups, laundry, and showers. For water fills and dumping between stops, most major Texas RV parks along I-10 (Columbus, Schulenburg) offer paid dump access. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot sewer hose and a water pressure regulator, since older Texas hookup posts sometimes deliver high pressure.
splashwaywaterpark.com/camping/What's included inside a typical RV rental in Sheridan?
Most motorhome rentals in Sheridan come ready to camp. Expect a full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave, sink, cookware, and dishes; a bathroom with shower and toilet; sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig; air conditioning (a must in Texas); heating; and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many include a generator, outdoor awning, TV, and Bluetooth speakers. Campervan rentals in Sheridan are more compact and great for couples, while Class C motorhomes work better for families. Wi-Fi varies — some hosts include a hotspot, others don't, and rural Sheridan has spotty cell coverage. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list and message the host about anything specific (like a coffee maker or baby gate) before booking.
txdmv.gov/motoristsWhat add-ons and extras do Sheridan hosts typically offer?
Sheridan hosts offer a great mix of add-ons to make your trip easier. Common options include camping chairs and outdoor tables, generators, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, propane refills, bike racks, kayaks, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Many hosts offer delivery within a set radius (often charged per mile) plus full setup at your campsite. Pickup and dropoff at the host's location is the standard option and is usually free. Mileage policies are clearly listed on each RV listing. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a bedding package if you are flying into Houston Bush (IAH), so your whole crew can land, drive to Sheridan, and step into a ready-to-camp RV.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sheridan%2C%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payments on RVezy are handled securely through the platform, so you never hand cash or cards directly to a host. You pay your rental total at booking with a credit or debit card, and a refundable security deposit is held (not charged) on your card before pickup. The deposit amount is shown on the listing before you book and typically ranges from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV. As long as the RV is returned in the agreed condition with the agreed mileage and generator hours, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer at pickup and dropoff to avoid any surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for visiting Sheridan, TX?
Here's the local secret: Sheridan is tiny (population around 1,500), so plan your grocery and supply runs before you arrive. Stock up in Hallettsville (20 minutes west) or Columbus (30 minutes north) where you'll find larger H-E-B stores, Walmart, and gas stations sized for RVs. Sheridan itself has a small convenience store and a handful of local eateries, plus the famous Hideaway Restaurant inside Splashway Campground, which has live music on Saturday nights. The Colorado River and nearby Lake Fayette also offer kayaking and bass fishing within 45 minutes. Pro tip: ask your RVezy host for their favorite local barbecue spot — small-town Texas barbecue is a hidden highlight of the region.
