Campgrounds and RV parks near Sonterra, TX

Granger Lake is the main outdoor draw within about 30 minutes of Sonterra. The reservoir spans about 4,400 acres with several Corps of Engineers campgrounds situated along its 40 miles of shoreline, and it is known as one of Central Texas's better crappie and white bass fisheries, with boat ramps, swim beaches, and shoreline fishing at the Corps parks. Two established trails run along the lake: Comanche Bluff Trail on the south side for hiking and biking, and the Willis Creek equestrian trail on the north side, open to hikers and horseback riders. Georgetown, about 20 miles south, offers Inner Space Cavern for guided tours, a walkable historic square, and access to Lake Georgetown on the North Fork of the San Gabriel River. Austin's museums, food scene, and Zilker Park are within an hour's drive south on I-35.

Central Texas has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild, short winters. Summer highs from June through September regularly climb above 90°F, and August is the hottest month, with highs regularly around 97 to 99°F. RV travelers in summer should plan on strong sun, high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms; sites with shade or reliable 50-amp service for air conditioning are worth prioritizing. Spring and fall are the most comfortable camping seasons. Daytime temperatures moderate into the 70s and 80s, wildflowers appear across the Blackland Prairie in March and April, and Granger Lake sees peak recreation traffic on weekends. May is the wettest month, averaging 116 mm of precipitation across roughly 9 rainy days, and can bring severe thunderstorms, hail, and flash-flood watches along the San Gabriel River drainage. Winters are mild but variable. Winter temperatures usually stay between 40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit, with occasional cold snaps during which temperatures can drop below freezing. Snowfall is rare. Corps of Engineers parks at Granger Lake stay open year-round, though some day-use amenities close in the off-season.

Expect flat to gently rolling terrain, open sky, and easy highway access. Roads into private RV parks are generally paved or well-graded gravel, and most parks accommodate big rigs with full hookups, though site width and tree cover vary. Cell service along the I-35 corridor is reliable; it thins on county roads east of Jarrell toward Granger Lake. Summer sun is intense and shade is limited on the prairie, so awnings, sunshades, and extra fresh water are useful. Mosquitoes and chiggers are common near the lake and river bottoms from late spring through early fall. Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV supply stops are concentrated in Jarrell, Georgetown, and Salado along I-35. Most private parks are pet-friendly with leash rules. At Corps of Engineers parks, park entrance hours run from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and visitors must be out of the parks prior to 10 p.m. Zebra mussels are present in the reservoir, so boaters must clean, drain, and dry all gear before moving between waters.
