Camping near Sundown, Texas
Sundown sits in southwestern Hockley County on the Texas South Plains, at the junction of FM 301 and FM 303, about fifteen miles southwest of Levelland and roughly forty-five minutes southwest of Lubbock. The town was originally part of the C. C. Slaughter Ranch and boomed after successful oil drilling in 1937, earning the nickname Boomtown, USA. The surrounding landscape reflects that heritage: flat semi-arid ranchland, cotton fields, and pump jacks under wide open skies. Elevation is about 3,540 feet, which keeps summer nights cooler than lower elevations to the south.
RV travelers use Sundown as a quiet base for exploring the South Plains and southern Panhandle. Nearby private parks include Opdyke West RV Park, Buggies RV Park, Peter's RV Park, Mesa Verde RV Park, and Shallowater Mobile Home and RV Park, most oriented toward long-stay and workforce guests but also welcoming short-term travelers with full hookups and pull-through access.
The closest full-service city is Lubbock, home to grocery, fuel, propane, RV service, and family attractions.
Things to do near Sundown
In town, the Sundown museum preserves oilfield artifacts and displays from the community's boom days, a quick stop for families interested in West Texas history. The nine-hole Roughneck Range golf course, once a municipal landing strip, is another local option. Wide, dark skies over the plains make evenings good for stargazing from camp.
Lubbock, about a forty-five-minute drive east, anchors the region for day trips. Family-friendly stops include the Buddy Holly Center, the Silent Wings Museum covering World War II glider pilots, the American Windmill Museum, Prairie Dog Town in Mackenzie Park, and the Lubbock Lake Landmark archaeological site. Buffalo Springs Lake, just outside Lubbock, offers boating and fishing with a Texas fishing license.
Longer drives reach Caprock Canyons State Park, known for free-roaming bison, and Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the Panhandle.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Sundown. From mid-March through May and again from mid-September through October, daytime highs typically sit in the sixties to low eighties with cooler nights, and area campgrounds have their best availability. Spring also brings the region's active severe-weather season: the South Plains lies in Tornado Alley, and thunderstorms with hail and high wind are most common from April through June.
Summer is hot and sunny. Highs commonly reach the low nineties with warm nights moderated somewhat by the elevation, and afternoon and evening thunderstorms deliver much of the year's rain. September is typically the wettest month. Sun protection, shade, and awning tie-downs matter.
Winter is short, dry, and mostly mild by day but cold at night, with occasional cold snaps, light snow, and strong wind. Many private RV parks stay open year-round for oilfield and snowbird traffic, though state parks farther north may see freezing overnight temperatures and pipe advisories.
How to book a campsite
Private RV parks near Sundown, including Opdyke West RV Park, Buggies RV Park, Peter's RV Park, Mesa Verde RV Park, and Shallowater Mobile Home and RV Park, are booked directly with the operator by phone or through their listings on RV booking platforms. Because several serve long-term and workforce guests, calling ahead confirms nightly availability, site length, and hookup type.
For Texas state parks in the wider region, reservations go through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department portal, powered by ReserveAmerica. Guests create a TPWD account, choose a park, site, and dates, and pay entry and camping fees at booking. Campsites can be reserved up to five months in advance, and popular parks such as Palo Duro Canyon and Caprock Canyons fill quickly for weekends and holidays.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Sundown is flat and open, which makes for easy driving and level sites but limited natural shade. Expect steady wind: awnings should be stowed when unattended, and lightweight gear needs to be secured. Cell coverage on major carriers is generally reliable along the FM 301, FM 303, and US 62/385 corridors.
Private parks in and around Sundown lean utilitarian, with gravel pads, full hookups, and pull-throughs suited to larger rigs. Amenities such as pools, playgrounds, or on-site stores are limited, so plan grocery, laundry, and propane runs into Levelland or Lubbock.
Wildlife in the area is mostly small: prairie dogs, rabbits, coyotes, and raptors. Rattlesnakes are present in warmer months, so keep pets leashed and use a flashlight after dark.
