Campgrounds and RV parks near Sunray, TX

Lake Meredith is the anchor activity. Sanford Dam creates the reservoir on the Canadian River, boat launches are open to the public, and the lake supports fishing for bass, catfish, crappie, and walleye. Swimming, paddling, and waterskiing are common in the warmer months, and hunting is permitted in season within designated areas. On land, the recreation area supports hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, and horseback riding. The Canadian River carved deep canyons, known locally as breaks, that frame much of the shoreline and give the park its distinctive terrain. Off the water, Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument shares a boundary with Lake Meredith and offers ranger-led tours of prehistoric quarry sites. Amarillo, an easy day trip south, adds Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Cadillac Ranch, and a full range of urban services and supply stops.

The Panhandle has four distinct seasons and a semi-arid climate. Spring, from March through May, brings the strongest winds and the season's first thunderstorms, but daytime highs in the 60s and 70s make it a comfortable stretch for camping. Wildflowers appear across the grasslands, and lake levels are typically at their fullest. Summer is the peak use season. Days are hot, often in the upper 80s and 90s, and shoreline sites at Blue West Campground and Sanford-Yake Campground fill quickly on weekends and holidays. August experiences the highest amount of precipitation, with an average of about 63 mm, with afternoon thunderstorms that can be intense but short-lived. Fall cools through September and October and is widely regarded as prime RV weather, with mild days, cool nights, and thinner crowds. Winter is cold and dry, with hard freezes common. Amarillo, the nearest reporting station, typically has 108 frosty nights a year, with freezing temperatures lingering into April. Many primitive sites remain accessible in winter, but water services are limited.

Expect open, wind-exposed terrain. The Panhandle plains give way to canyon breaks around the lake, and most campgrounds sit on caprock benches or in shallow draws. Shade is limited, so awnings and window covers help in summer. Cellular coverage is generally usable near Sunray, Fritch, and Sanford-Yake, and spottier in the more remote coves. Facilities vary widely by site. Sanford-Yake has picnic tables, shade shelters, grills, and restrooms with potable water. Most other shoreline campgrounds are primitive with vault toilets and no drinking water, so plan to arrive with full fresh tanks. Bring extra water, secure loose gear against wind, and watch for rattlesnakes in warm months. Roads to shoreline sites include gravel and short off-pavement stretches, so check clearance if towing a longer trailer.
