Campgrounds and RV parks near Sunset Valley, TX

Mckinney Falls State Park anchors the outdoor side of a trip. The park sits at the confluence of Onion Creek and Williamson Creek, with swimming allowed in Onion Creek at swimmers' own risk and hiking trails that can be affected by creek levels after rain. Coolers are not permitted at the Falls, and pets must stay leashed and out of the water. From a base at Austin Lone Star RV Resort or Awkward Turtle RV Austin, downtown Austin sits roughly five to ten miles away, putting South Congress, Zilker Park, Barton Springs, and the live music corridor within a short drive. Trailmarker RV Park and Buda Place work well for families using San Marcos, Kyle, and Buda for outlet shopping, rivers, and small-town restaurants.

Central Texas has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs generally in the seventies and eighties Fahrenheit and lower humidity than midsummer. Wildflowers peak in April, and fall brings cooler evenings suited to campfires. Summer is hot. Normal daily highs in Austin sit in the mid-nineties from June through August, and afternoon heat indices often climb higher. Shaded sites, awnings, and reliable air conditioning matter, and swimming holes on Onion Creek and the Barton Creek greenbelt see heavy use. Mckinney Falls State Park regularly reaches day-use capacity on weekends and holidays, closing walk-up entry when full. Winter stays mild overall but cold fronts can drop lows near freezing for short stretches, and heavy rain events any time of year can raise Onion Creek and limit trail access across the park.

Roads in and around Sunset Valley are wide and well maintained, and most RV parks along the I-35 and Mopac corridors are set up for larger rigs with paved or gravel pads and full hookups. Traffic on I-35 through Austin is heavy at rush hour, so plan arrival and departure outside of weekday peaks when possible. At Mckinney Falls State Park, the entrance gate is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the park office closes at 4:15 p.m. Late-arriving campers need to phone the park before 4:15 p.m. on the day of arrival to get late-arrival instructions. Cell coverage is generally strong across the Austin metro, and grocery, propane, dump stations, and RV parts stores are all within a short drive of Sunset Valley.
