Campgrounds near Taft, Texas
Taft sits in San Patricio County on the northwest edge of Corpus Christi Bay, roughly 20 miles from downtown Corpus Christi and within an easy drive of Aransas Pass, Rockport, and Portland. The town is small and largely agricultural, but its position on the Coastal Bend puts RV travelers close to Gulf beaches, bay fishing, and multiple state and county parks.
Most RV parks near Taft are small, full-hookup properties oriented toward snowbirds and anglers rather than resort-style destinations. Gregory RV Park and Hitching Post RV Park sit closest to town, while Sea Breeze RV Park and Corpus Christi Boardwalk RV Park are positioned toward the water for easier bay access. Patriot RV Parks operate in the broader San Patricio area and are used as an inland base for coast trips.
The Corpus Christi metro adds larger commercial parks, and state parks at Mustang Island and Goose Island are within about an hour of Taft for travelers who want beachfront or oak-shaded sites.
Things to do near Taft
Beach access is the main draw. Mustang Island State Park offers more than five miles of Gulf coastline for swimming, surfing, and beach driving, and Padre Island National Seashore extends the shoreline south of Corpus Christi. Rockport Beach, across the bay, is a family-friendly saltwater area with picnic areas and playgrounds.
Birding is a serious activity here. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, about 50 miles from Taft, hosts wintering whooping cranes along with alligators and hiking trails. Goose Island State Park protects the Big Tree, one of the largest live oaks in Texas.
In Corpus Christi itself, families can tour the USS Lexington museum ship and the Texas State Aquarium, both a short drive across the Harbor Bridge from Taft.

The Coastal Bend has a subtropical climate with mild winters and long, hot, humid summers. Winter, from December through February, is the peak RV season. Coastal state parks and private parks along the bay fill with snowbirds from November through March, and Mustang Island, Goose Island, and Galveston Island state parks are known winter destinations for that reason.
Spring brings warm, pleasant days and one of North America's best migratory bird windows, with peak songbird movement through April and May. It is also thunderstorm season, with May and June producing the most intense storms.
Summer is hot and humid, with daytime highs consistently in the 90s Fahrenheit. It is also Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks from August through October along the Texas coast, so travelers should watch National Hurricane Center advisories. Fall cools gradually, with September historically the wettest month due to tropical moisture, and October and November returning to comfortable camping weather.

Booking an RV site near Taft
Private parks near Taft, including Gregory RV Park, Sea Breeze RV Park, Corpus Christi Boardwalk RV Park, Patriot RV Parks, and Hitching Post RV Park, generally take reservations by phone or through their websites. Monthly rates are common, and winter Texan sites are often booked several months out for December through February stays.
For state parks, Texas Parks and Wildlife uses a reservation system with a shorter booking window than most states. Mustang Island and Goose Island accept overnight reservations up to five months in advance, with the window opening at 8 a.m. Central. Sites at popular winter dates go quickly when the window opens.
A Texas State Parks Pass waives daily entrance fees at all state parks and pays for itself with regular visits.
What to expect
Expect a flat, open coastal landscape with limited shade at most private parks. Sites near Taft are typically level with full hookups, 30 and 50 amp service, and long pull-throughs suitable for larger fifth wheels and Class A rigs. Amenities vary widely: some parks offer pools and laundry, while others are simple gravel lots geared toward long-term stays.
Wind is a constant factor on the Coastal Bend. Slide toppers, awnings, and satellite dishes should be secured, and towable trailers should be leveled with chocks on both sides. Mosquitoes and biting flies are active from spring through fall, especially near marshy areas.
Cell coverage is generally strong across San Patricio and Nueces counties. Grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops are easiest in Portland, Aransas Pass, and Corpus Christi rather than in Taft itself.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Taft, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Taft, TX, and how can I save?
RV rental in Taft is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Texas Coastal Bend. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches sit between $250 and $400 per night. To find a cheap RV rental in Taft, aim for weekday bookings, travel during the shoulder months of late September through early November, and filter for hosts offering weekly discounts. Booking 2 to 3 months ahead of Spring Break or the Whooping Crane Festival in nearby Port Aransas locks in better rates before coastal demand spikes. Pro tip: a 4 to 5 night trip often unlocks better per-night pricing than a quick weekend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Taft,TexasWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Taft, TX?
Great news: for nearly every RV rental in Taft, your regular driver's license is all you need. The Texas Department of Public Safety only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license if the RV's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) exceeds 26,000 pounds, which is heavier than the vast majority of motorhomes and trailers on RVezy. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for personal RV use in Texas. You must be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and identification is verified through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association before flying in and you'll be road-ready the moment you land at Corpus Christi International Airport.
dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/classes-driver-licensesIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included for trips around Taft?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Taft includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit FM 631 toward Corpus Christi Bay with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle and gives renters significant financial protection, while roadside help is just a phone call away if you get a flat on US 181 or your battery dies near Mustang Island. During checkout you choose your protection level, not the host, so you can pick the coverage that matches your comfort and budget. Combined with the host's pre-trip walkthrough, this is what makes first-time renters feel confident pulling out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Taft RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates without second-guessing. If plans change, the refund amount depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. You'll see the exact terms during checkout and in your booking confirmation, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: book your Taft RV trip early to secure shoulder-season dates in October and November, when the weather is glorious and the campgrounds are quieter.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Taft?
Absolutely. Many RVezy hosts in the Taft and Corpus Christi area offer pet-friendly RV rentals, and the Coastal Bend is a dog-lover's paradise. Use the Pet-Friendly filter when browsing listings, then message the host about your pup's size and breed. Once you're rolling, Mustang Island State Park allows leashed dogs on the beach, Goose Island State Park welcomes pets in the campground (leashed at all times), and the shoreline along Padre Island National Seashore is one of the few national park beaches where dogs are allowed on leash. Pack a freshwater rinse jug for sandy paws and you're set for a tail-wagging Taft RV trip.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/mustang-islandCan the RV be delivered to my campground or rental house near Taft?
Yes, RV delivery in Taft is one of the best perks for first-time renters. Many local hosts will drive the RV to your campsite at Mustang Island State Park, Goose Island State Park, or a private property in Portland, Gregory, or Aransas Pass, level it, hook up water and power, and give you a full walkthrough before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and message the host with your destination to confirm the delivery fee, which is usually based on mileage from Taft. This is perfect if you're flying into Corpus Christi International Airport (about 25 miles south) and want to skip driving the rig entirely.
cctexas.com/departments/corpus-christi-international-airportHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Taft, and what are mileage policies like?
You've got plenty of room to roam. Taft sits at the top of the Corpus Christi Bay area, so most renters cover 100 to 300 miles total exploring nearby beaches and refuges. RVezy hosts set their own mileage allowances, and many include 100 to 150 free miles per night with reasonable per-mile fees beyond that. If you're planning a longer RV road trip from Taft to San Antonio (about 150 miles), Houston (around 215 miles), or South Padre Island (roughly 165 miles), filter for listings with higher mileage caps or RV rental with unlimited mileage. Message the host upfront with your route, and many will offer a flat-rate mileage package for road-trippers.
txdot.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Taft, TX for RV camping?
RV camping near Taft is all about the Coastal Bend's bays and barrier islands. Mustang Island State Park (about 35 miles south) has water and electric sites just behind the dunes plus primitive drive-up beach sites. Goose Island State Park (about 30 miles north near Rockport) offers bayfront sites and wooded sites under live oaks, all with water and electricity. Padre Island National Seashore's Bird Island Basin Campground has primitive sites on the Laguna Madre at a low nightly fee. Closer to home, private RV parks in Portland and Gregory offer full hookups within 10 to 15 miles. Reserve state park sites up to 5 months in advance.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/goose-islandWhen is the best time of year to take an RV trip from Taft, TX?
October through April is the sweet spot for an RV trip from Taft. The Coastal Bend has hot, humid summers (July and August average highs around 92 to 94 degrees with high heat index values) and short, mild winters where January lows still hover around 50 degrees and frost is rare. Snowbirds, anglers, and birders flock here from November through March, which also overlaps with whooping crane season at nearby Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. Spring (March to early May) is gorgeous with wildflowers and 70 to 80 degree days. Pro tip: book early for the Whooping Crane Festival in Port Aransas, when local campgrounds fill fast.
weather.gov/crp/I've never rented an RV before. How do I feel confident driving one around Taft?
First time renting an RV? You're in the perfect place to start. Taft sits on flat, straight South Texas highways like US 181 and TX 35, with wide shoulders and minimal mountain or canyon driving anywhere in the Coastal Bend. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering brakes, propane, tanks, awnings, and backing up. You can also message the host before booking with any questions. If you're nervous, choose a Class B campervan or smaller Class C motorhome and request delivery so the host handles the highway portion. Take 15 minutes practicing turns in an empty lot at Sinton or Robstown before heading to the beach, and you'll feel like a pro.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws.htmlWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV during the trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy rental in Taft comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included in your protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and more, whether you're on the JFK Causeway heading to Padre Island or pulled over on I-37 toward San Antonio. Your host is also a direct line of support, plus RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after every trip through the Help Center. Save the roadside assistance number to your phone before pickup, snap a photo of your VIN, and you'll have everything you need to get rolling again quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the most popular road trip routes from Taft, TX?
An RV road trip from Taft puts the whole Texas coast and Hill Country within easy reach. Popular routes include the 35-mile run south to Mustang Island and Port Aransas via the Aransas Pass ferry, the 60-mile loop north to Rockport and Goose Island State Park for whooping crane viewing, and the 150-mile drive northwest to San Antonio for the River Walk and the Alamo. For a bigger adventure, head about 215 miles east to the Houston area or 165 miles south to South Padre Island. Note: travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations, so plan your loop to stay stateside. Most hosts welcome interstate travel; just confirm via message.
txdot.gov/What kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I expect for an RV rental in Taft?
Budgeting fuel is easier than most people think. Class B campervans in the Taft area average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get around 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A coaches typically run 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but your tow vehicle's mileage drops 20 to 30 percent. South Texas gas prices generally run a bit below the national average; you'll find convenient fill-ups in Taft, Sinton, and Portland with diesel widely available along US 181 and I-37. Pro tip: top off in Taft or Gregory before heading to Mustang Island or Padre Island, where station prices on the barrier islands tend to be higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Taft?
For Texas state parks, book as soon as your dates are firm. Mustang Island and Goose Island State Parks both accept reservations up to 5 months in advance through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and the bayfront and waterfront sites fill quickly for weekends, holidays, and the January to April snowbird season. Padre Island National Seashore's campgrounds (Malaquite and Bird Island Basin) are first-come, first-served, so plan an early-morning arrival. For private parks like Gregory RV Park or Sea Breeze in Portland, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually enough outside peak season. Pro tip: weekday arrivals dramatically increase your odds at the best sites.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Taft for an RV?
Driving an RV around Taft is about as relaxed as it gets in Texas. The terrain is pancake-flat, US 181 and TX 35 are wide and well-maintained, and there are no mountain passes or tight switchbacks in the entire Coastal Bend. Watch for two things specific to this region: strong Gulf crosswinds, especially in spring afternoons when 20 to 30 mph gusts can push a tall rig (slow down and grip the wheel firmly), and the JFK Causeway to Padre Island, which is high and exposed. Hurricane season runs June through November, so check the National Weather Service Corpus Christi forecast before long days on the road.
weather.gov/crp/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Taft?
Coastal Bend campgrounds offer a good range of comforts. Goose Island and Mustang Island State Parks both have water and 30/50-amp electric hookups, hot showers, restrooms, and dump stations, though neither has individual sewer hookups at the sites. Private parks like Gregory RV Park, Sea Breeze RV Community in Portland, and Hitching Post RV Park in Taft typically offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, and laundry. Padre Island National Seashore campgrounds are primitive with vault toilets and no hookups, but a dump station and potable water fill are available near the Malaquite Visitor Center. Always top off fresh water and dump before heading to beach camping.
nps.gov/pais/planyourvisit/camping.htmWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Taft, TX?
You'll be surprised how loaded these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Taft includes a queen or full bed, a dinette and/or sofa that converts to extra sleeping, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning (a must for Texas summers), heating, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many listings include a generator, outdoor awning, and propane grill, and some offer TVs, Wi-Fi boosters, or solar. Campervan rental options in Taft are more compact but still include a bed, kitchenette, and often a wet bath. Check the listing's amenities list and message the host if you need anything specific like a child seat anchor or CPAP-friendly outlets.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Taft,TexasWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Taft?
Rent an RV in Taft and you'll see a menu of helpful add-ons from local hosts: linen and kitchen kits, generator hours, bike racks, kayaks, beach chairs, portable Wi-Fi, propane refills, and pet-cleaning fees. Most pickups happen at the host's home in Taft, Gregory, Portland, or Sinton, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included at no charge. Mileage policies vary by host (often 100 to 150 free miles per night), and many offer flat-rate packages for longer trips. Pro tip: ask about an exterior wash add-on if you're driving on Padre Island National Seashore beach sand. It will save you the post-trip cleaning fee.
txdmv.gov/How does payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy rental in Taft?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking, never directly to the host, and your card is charged according to the schedule shown at checkout. A refundable security deposit is held before your trip starts and released back to you after the host confirms the RV was returned in good shape, with fuel and tanks handled per the listing. To avoid any deposit issues, take dated photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer at pickup and dropoff, return the rig with fuel topped off and tanks dumped as agreed, and message the host immediately if anything happens on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Taft RV rental on a family trip to see whooping cranes and the beach?
This is the dream family RV trip Taft was made for. From November through March, the endangered whooping cranes winter at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, about 45 minutes north of Taft, where an auto tour loop and an observation tower make sightings easy for kids. Pair that with beach days at Mustang Island State Park (35 miles south), shelling at Padre Island National Seashore, and a stop at the Texas State Aquarium and USS Lexington in Corpus Christi (about 25 miles south). Many family-friendly RVs sleep 4 to 8, have seatbelts for travel, and include outdoor gear like chairs and a grill. Book by October for prime crane-season dates.
