Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel on the South Plains. April, May, October, and early November bring warm days, cool nights, and the fewest weather closures. Late spring also carries the region's peak thunderstorm and tornado risk, so travelers should monitor NWS Lubbock alerts and choose sites with sturdy hookups and awning tie-downs. Summer is hot with afternoon highs regularly in the low 90s, though the semi-arid climate keeps humidity lower than in East Texas. Rainfall peaks in late spring and early summer as afternoon and evening thunderstorms. This is peak season for Buffalo Springs Lake, when the marina, beaches, and live concerts draw heavy weekend crowds, particularly during holidays when the campground reaches capacity. Winters are short but sharp. Cold fronts push overnight temperatures below freezing, occasional snow and ice events close roads, and strong north winds are common. Most private RV parks in the area stay open year-round, though some amenities scale back between November and February.

Sites in this region tend to be open and level, with limited natural shade outside the Buffalo Springs canyon. Expect wind: sustained breezes are normal year-round, and awnings should be retracted when not in use. Full hookups are common at private parks; county sites more often offer water and electric only. At Buffalo Springs Lake, there are 34 full RV hookups, 89 partial hookups, and 59 primitive tent sites, with 20/30/50 amp service and many sites able to accommodate large travel trailers. Amenities include a dump station, showers, fire pits, and a marina restaurant. Cell service is generally reliable near Lubbock and along US-87 but can be spotty on ranch roads.
