Camping near Tool, Texas
Tool sits on the western shore of Cedar Creek Lake in Henderson County, about an hour southeast of Dallas. The lake is one of the largest reservoirs in Texas, covering roughly 33,000 acres with more than 320 miles of shoreline, which makes the surrounding towns of Tool, Seven Points, Gun Barrel City, Mabank, and Malakoff a dense cluster of RV parks, marinas, and lakefront campgrounds.
Private RV options close to Tool include Pine Gardens RV Park at Cedar Creek Lake, Blue Sky at Cedar Creek Lake RV Park in nearby Seven Points, Chuck's RV Resort in Mabank, and Shiloh on the Lake near Malakoff. Most offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, pull-through sites, and access to the water through boat ramps or fishing piers.
For a state-park experience, Purtis Creek State Park lies just east near Eustace and provides a quieter, forested alternative on its own 355-acre lake.
Things to do around Tool
Cedar Creek Lake is the main draw. Boating, water-skiing, swimming, and fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and hybrid striped bass are the everyday activities. Three islands, Big Island, Bird Island, and Telfair Island, form the Cedar Creek Islands Wildlife Management Area and serve as rookeries for aquatic birds, which makes the reservoir popular with birdwatchers.
Families often add a day trip to Whatz-Up Family Fun Park in Seven Points for go-karts, mini golf, and bumper cars, or the East Texas Arboretum in Athens for shaded walking trails and a suspension bridge.
At Purtis Creek State Park, campers can hike the 4.1-mile Wolfpen Hike and Bike Trail or the 1.7-mile Beaver Slide Nature Path along the lakeshore. First Monday Trade Days in nearby Canton is a large flea market held one weekend each month.

The Cedar Creek Lake area has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are warm and humid, with high temperatures reaching 90 degrees or higher on most days in June, July, and August. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when lakefront RV sites fill quickly on weekends and holidays.
Spring is the wettest stretch, with April and May producing the year's heaviest rain and occasional thunderstorms. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and steadier fishing, and is often the most comfortable time for a longer RV stay. The first freeze typically arrives in late November and the last freeze in mid-March.
Winters are mild but variable. Cold spells are usually short-lived, interspersed with periods of warm southerly air flow. Several private parks stay open year-round, and Purtis Creek State Park offers weekly rates in the low season from December through February.
How to book a site
Purtis Creek State Park is reserved through Texas Parks and Wildlife. Campsite reservations open five months in advance, and daily entrance passes can be booked up to one month ahead. The park often reaches capacity, so reservations are recommended for both camping and day use, particularly on summer and holiday weekends.
Campsite options include 59 sites with water and electricity, five walk-in tent sites, and 13 primitive hike-in sites reached by a hike of at least 0.65 miles. If a site is not checked into by noon the day after the scheduled arrival date, the rest of the reservation is cancelled.
Private parks such as Pine Gardens RV Park at Cedar Creek Lake, Blue Sky at Cedar Creek Lake RV Park, Chuck's RV Resort, and Shiloh on the Lake are booked directly with each park or through third-party RV platforms.
What to expect on arrival
Private RV parks around Tool are set up for larger rigs. Most offer pull-through sites, full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, laundry, showers, and dump stations, and several sit directly on the lake with a boat ramp or fishing pier on site.
At Purtis Creek State Park, the gate is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the office is staffed daily from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Late arrivals use a self-pay envelope at the Iron Ranger and must complete registration at headquarters by 9 a.m. the next morning.
The park has a 50-boat limit on the lake with a no-wake policy, and largemouth bass over 16 inches are catch-and-release only. Groceries and fuel are available about five minutes away in Eustace.

Texas does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers, even larger Class A rigs. To book on RVezy you generally need to be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout, so there's no paperwork to chase down. Absolutely. Pet-friendly RV rentals in Tool are easy to find, since Cedar Creek Lake is a famously dog-loving community. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to narrow listings to hosts who welcome your pup, and message them directly with any questions about size or pet fees. Once you arrive, dogs love splashing in the lake's shallow coves on the west shore near Tool, and nearby Purtis Creek State Park allows leashed pets on most trails and in campsites (but not in park buildings). Pro tip: pack a long lead and a quick-dry towel, since Cedar Creek's shoreline is sandy and muddy and your dog will absolutely find the water.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/pets-in-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Tool, TX?
Yes, RV delivery in Tool is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're a first-time renter. Many local hosts will drive the RV directly to Cedar Creek Lake campgrounds, level it, hook up water and 30/50-amp power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are typically based on distance from the host's location, and you can filter for Delivery on RVezy or simply ask in a pre-booking message. Pro tip: pair delivery with a lakefront site for the smoothest possible first-timer experience, you literally just show up with groceries.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106154-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on a Tool, TX RV trip?

From Cedar Creek Lake you're roughly 60 miles southeast of downtown Dallas, about 15 miles west of Athens, around 90 miles from Tyler's piney woods, roughly 160 miles to the Fort Worth Stockyards, and about 180 miles to Caddo Lake near the Louisiana border. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance with the option to buy extra miles up front at a discount, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, so message ahead if you're planning a longer loop. Pro tip: pre-purchasing mileage during booking is almost always cheaper than paying overage fees later.

June through August brings hot, humid days in the low to mid 90s, perfect for swimming and tubing if you embrace the heat. Winters are mild with average highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s and only trace amounts of snow most years, making December and January great for quiet fishing weekends. Pro tip: shoulder-season rates are noticeably cheaper than peak summer.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be set up for success in Tool?
Yes, your first time renting an RV at Cedar Creek Lake is one of the easiest on-ramps in Texas. Your host gives a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering propane, water, generator, slide-outs, awning, and dump procedures, and they're a text away during your trip. Tool's roads are flat, traffic is light, and most local campgrounds have wide pull-through sites that are forgiving for beginners. If you'd rather not tow or drive at all, choose a delivery-included listing and your host will park and level the RV for you. Pro tip: do a short practice loop around the campground before heading to the grocery store, you'll feel like a pro within the first hour.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106274-First-time-renter-tipsWhat if I have a breakdown during my Tool, TX RV trip?
You're covered. 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is one phone call away anywhere around Cedar Creek Lake or beyond. Whether it's a flat tire on FM-85, a dead battery at your campground, or a tow needed back toward Dallas, the roadside team coordinates the service for you. Your host is also a direct resource for quirks specific to their RV, like resetting a generator or finding a hidden fuse panel. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before you leave the pickup, that 30 seconds of prep makes any hiccup feel like a small detour, not a trip-ender.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat are the best RV road trips from Tool, TX?
An RV road trip from Tool can go in almost any direction and reach a great destination within a few hours. Dallas-Fort Worth is about 60 to 75 miles northwest for big-city detours. Tyler State Park sits about 90 miles east in the Piney Woods, perfect for shaded forest camping. Caddo Lake State Park is roughly 180 miles east near the Louisiana border for bayou kayaking. Lake Texoma on the Oklahoma border is about 130 miles north, and Austin is around 220 miles southwest. Cross-border travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but anywhere in the continental US is generally fair game with host approval. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm any out-of-state plans.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/find-a-parkHow much should I budget for fuel on a Tool, TX RV trip?
Fuel is very manageable for an RV rental in Tool since most lake trips are short hops. Expect Class C motorhomes to average about 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A coaches about 6 to 9, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, usually 9 to 13 MPG. Gas prices around Henderson County typically run close to or slightly below the Texas state average, with stations in Tool, Mabank, and Gun Barrel City offering competitive pricing. For a typical weekend within 50 miles of Cedar Creek Lake, most renters spend about $40 to $90 on fuel total. Pro tip: fill up in Mabank or Athens rather than at I-20 travel plazas, you'll often save 20 to 40 cents per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Tool, TX?
For Cedar Creek Lake-area campgrounds, two to four weeks ahead is usually plenty, but there are exceptions worth planning around. Purtis Creek State Park books through the Texas State Parks reservation system up to five months in advance, and summer weekends, spring break, and Memorial Day commonly sell out. Private parks around Tool, Mabank, and Gun Barrel City take reservations directly and tend to have more flexibility, especially midweek. If you're targeting July 4th fireworks over the lake, lock your site in by early May. Pro tip: book your RV on RVezy first, then the campground, that way you know your exact length and hookup needs (30 vs 50 amp) before you reserve.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Tool, TX?
Driving an RV around Tool is refreshingly low-stress. The area is flat East Texas terrain with two-lane highways like TX-274, FM-85, and US-175 connecting the lake communities, all easy to navigate even in a 30-foot Class C. Traffic spikes on summer Friday evenings as Dallas weekenders pour in, so aim for a Thursday or early-Friday arrival if possible. Watch for occasional severe thunderstorms in spring and the rare winter ice event, both of which the National Weather Service Fort Worth office tracks closely. Pro tip: if you're heading into Dallas with your motorhome rental from Tool, avoid I-635 LBJ during rush hour and use the Sam Rayburn Tollway or detour via US-175 to stay calm.
weather.gov/fwd/What amenities can I expect at Cedar Creek Lake campgrounds?
Local campgrounds around Tool are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Most private parks offer full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Many also have boat ramps, fishing piers, swimming pools, and playgrounds since lake recreation is the main draw. On-site dump stations are standard at private parks, and Purtis Creek State Park has a dedicated dump station for visitors. Potable water fill-ups are easy at any full-hookup site. Pro tip: confirm your site's amp rating when you book, larger Class A rigs with two air conditioners need 50-amp service to run everything comfortably during a Texas summer.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/purtis-creek/fees-facilitiesWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Tool, TX?
More than you'd think. A typical campervan or motorhome rental in Tool comes fully equipped: real beds (queens are common, plus convertible dinettes), a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control (roof AC and furnace), and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings also include a TV, exterior speakers, an awning for shade, and a generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts include a mobile hotspot, others rely on campground networks. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and check the listing photos carefully for the specific layout, a family RV trip from Tool usually works best with a bunkhouse floorplan or a slide-out that opens up the living area.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tool%2C%20TexasWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Cedar Creek Lake area get creative with add-ons that make your trip easier. Common options include camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generators, propane fill, kayaks and SUPs, bike racks, and pet packages. Delivery and setup is a standout add-on locally, especially to lakeside campgrounds or a private lake house driveway. Pickup is typically at the host's location in Tool, Mabank, Gun Barrel City, or Seven Points, and you'll get a full orientation before you leave. Mileage policies vary by host, some offer a generous daily allowance, others include unlimited miles for lake-only trips. Pro tip: bundle the linen kit and delivery if it's your first booking, you'll save an hour of hauling gear and setting up.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tool%2C%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and transparent on RVezy. You pay securely through the platform when you book your RV rental in Texas, never directly to the host in cash, which keeps everything documented and protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically as a pre-authorization on your card) and is released after your trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. The deposit amount varies by RV but is always shown upfront before you confirm. Pro tip: take quick walk-around photos and a short video at pickup and dropoff, it's the easiest way to keep your full deposit and start your next Cedar Creek Lake trip with zero friction.
