Camping near West, Texas
West sits in McLennan County along Interstate 35, about 20 miles north of Waco and roughly halfway between Dallas and Austin. The town is best known as a Czech heritage community and a convenient I-35 stop, and it puts RV travelers within easy reach of Waco attractions, Lake Waco, and the Brazos River corridor.
Campgrounds in the immediate area lean toward full-hookup private RV parks rather than tent-oriented public campgrounds. I-35 RV Park & Campground and North Crest RV Park and Propane sit close to the highway for overnight and extended stays, while Waco Creekside Resort and Post Oak RV Park and Cabins offer resort-style options a short drive south toward Waco. North Texas Airstream Park, located just off I-35 near Hillsboro, serves Airstream owners specifically.
That central Texas location makes West a practical base for road trips between the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and the Austin area, with quick access to Central Texas lakes and state parks.
Things to do near West
The town itself centers on Czech bakeries and heritage sites along Oak Street, with kolache stops that draw travelers off I-35. A short drive south leads to Waco, home to the Magnolia Market at the Silos, the Dr Pepper Museum, Cameron Park Zoo, and the Waco Mammoth National Monument.
Outdoor options include Lake Waco for boating, swimming, and shoreline recreation at Airport Park and Speegleville Park, and Cameron Park along the Brazos and Bosque rivers for mountain biking and paddling. Mother Neff State Park and Lake Whitney State Park lie within about an hour and add hiking, fishing, and swim beaches.
Day trips north reach Hillsboro outlets and the historic downtown squares of Waxahachie and Cleburne.

Spring and fall are the strongest RV seasons in this part of Central Texas. March through May brings wildflowers, comfortable daytime temperatures, and the region's wettest stretch, with May thunderstorms common. October and early November deliver warm days, cooler nights, and generally drier conditions after the summer heat breaks.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs frequently reaching the mid-90s Fahrenheit from June through August. Shaded sites and reliable 50-amp service for air conditioning are worth prioritizing during this stretch.
Winter camping is viable because freezes are usually brief, though overnight temperatures can drop below freezing from late November into March. Hard freezes can affect water hookups, so freshwater hoses and tanks may need protection during cold snaps. Most private RV parks in the area remain open year round, making West a workable stop even in the cooler months.

The RV was as advertised everything works and didn’t get to meet Dan but his son Andrew explained everything.

Dan and his teardrop are amazing!!! First - Dan - great communication, explained all the parts and best uses for the trailer, as well as any possible issues. Had all possible connectors, made sure everything was working, and that we were comfortable before handing the trailer over. Extremely accommodating when we needed to make changes! Second - Trailer - is awesome! Best sleep we have had camping (and we are glampers!), the microwave came in so handy when cooking, electrical hook-ups and plugs made everything so convenient, and the ceramic heater available to plug in made it comfortable inside while it was in freezing temperatures outside! We look forward to renting again! Also, so lucky this trailer is towable by our Honda CR-V!

This was the first time using RVezy and I’m glad I chose Kris and his RV. He set it up on time and was available for anything that may have come up. Having said that the RV was perfect for our two days using it and we will be utilizing Kris again.

Great trailer. It had a maintenance issue because of the freeze, but Kris fixed them straight away.

How to book campgrounds near West
Private RV parks near West, including I-35 RV Park & Campground, Waco Creekside Resort, Post Oak RV Park and Cabins, and North Crest RV Park and Propane, generally take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Some also list availability on third-party booking platforms. Monthly and weekly rates are common at these properties for extended stays.
North Texas Airstream Park is a residential community limited to owners of recreational vehicles manufactured by Airstream, and it welcomes visiting Airstream owners at full-hookup guest spaces. Contact the park directly to confirm availability and eligibility.
For Texas state parks in the surrounding area, such as Mother Neff and Lake Whitney, reservations go through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reservation system online or by phone, with a booking window that opens five months in advance. Weekend sites during spring and fall typically fill weeks ahead.
What to expect
Expect flat to gently rolling terrain, blackland prairie soils, and open sky. Sites at the closest RV parks are generally level with gravel or concrete pads, full hookups, and pull-through options suited to larger rigs and travel trailers. Cell coverage on the major carriers is reliable along the I-35 corridor.
I-35 traffic and freight rail run through West, so highway-adjacent sites carry some road and train noise. Parks set back from the interstate, or south toward the Waco creek corridors, tend to be quieter.
Summer brings mosquitoes, chiggers, and fire ants, and shade is limited at many prairie-edge sites. Severe weather season runs from spring into early summer, so monitor local forecasts and know each campground's shelter plan for thunderstorms and tornado warnings.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near West, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in West, TX?
An RV rental in West, TX is typically more affordable than booking out of Dallas or Austin because you are tapping into smaller-town pricing along the I-35 corridor. Travel trailers from local hosts often start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes generally run $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches sit around $250 to $400. To save more, look at midweek dates outside Labor Day weekend, when Westfest sends demand soaring, and use Instant Book to spot last-minute deals. Bundling delivery to a nearby campground often beats paying mileage on a long drive back, so always compare totals before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%2C%20TexasDo I need a special license to rent an RV in West, TX?
For nearly every RV rental in West, TX, your regular driver's license is all you need. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license when a personal RV exceeds 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, and the vast majority of RVezy listings (campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and small fifth wheels) fall well under that threshold. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified inside the booking flow. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit and you are set to rent an RV in West, TX.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my West, TX RV rental?
You are covered from the moment you hit the road. Every RV rental in West, TX booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can focus on kolaches and country roads instead of worst-case scenarios. During checkout you choose the protection level that best fits your trip, and that plan helps cover physical damage to the RV up to the plan's coverage limits. It is purpose-built for peer-to-peer RV rentals and backed by RVezy support before, during, and after your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my West, TX RV trip?
Booking is low-risk, so go ahead and lock in those Westfest dates. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking, so if your plans shift early, you are protected. Refund amounts after that depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. If you ever need to change or cancel, RVezy's support team is one click away. Tip: message the host first about a date shift before canceling, since many West-area hosts are flexible when their calendar allows it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in West, TX?
Yes, and your pup will love the trip. Plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in West, TX, so toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see every listing that welcomes furry co-pilots. Once you are in town, leashed dogs are welcome at Lake Whitney State Park (about 35 miles west) and at most McLennan County parks just south toward Waco. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees, and bring a portable shade canopy, since Texas summer pavement can heat up fast.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/petsCan the RV be delivered to my campground in West, TX?
Yes, and RV delivery in West, TX is one of the smartest moves for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to your campground (Lake Whitney State Park, Mother Neff State Park, or a Waco-area RV park are popular drop spots), level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no I-35 traffic stress and no learning to back into a tight site on day one. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see which hosts offer it, and confirm the delivery fee, which usually scales with mileage.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340054-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on a West, TX RV trip, and how does mileage work?
You have serious range from West, Texas, sitting right on Interstate 35 between Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin. Each host sets their own mileage allowance, with daily limits usually between 100 and 200 free miles plus the option to buy extra miles upfront, and some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage on longer bookings. From West you can reach Waco (about 20 miles), Dallas (about 75 miles), Austin (about 110 miles), Fredericksburg (about 175 miles), and Galveston (about 245 miles). Tip: if you are planning a bigger loop, ask the host about a flat-rate mileage package before booking, it is almost always cheaper than per-mile overage fees.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106634-Mileage-and-generator-usageWhere are the best campgrounds near West, TX?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in West, TX. Lake Whitney State Park (about 35 miles west) offers water, electric, and full hookup sites along a stunning reservoir with swimming and fishing. Mother Neff State Park (about 45 miles southwest) is one of Texas's oldest state parks with peaceful, shaded sites along the Leon River. Closer to town, Midway Park on Lake Waco and private parks along I-35 give you full hookups within 20 minutes of West's kolache bakeries. Book Texas state park sites up to five months ahead through Texas Parks and Wildlife, which is the sweet spot for spring weekends.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-whitneyWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in West, TX?
Central Texas gives you a long, friendly RV season. The sweet spots are mid-March through late May (wildflowers, bluebonnets along I-35, highs in the 70s and low 80s) and mid-September through November, when summer heat breaks and Westfest fills the town with Czech music every Labor Day weekend. January averages around 46F and July averages near 86F at nearby Lake Whitney, so winter RV camping is doable with a light heater. Summer is popular for lake trips but expect afternoon highs in the mid-90s, so book a rig with strong air conditioning. Tip: October weekdays often have the lowest nightly rates and the most open campsites within an hour of West.
weather.gov/fwd/I have never driven an RV before. Is West, TX a good place to start?
It really is. West sits on a flat stretch of I-35 with wide rural roads, light traffic outside Dallas-bound rush hour, and easy on/off access, which makes it one of the most beginner-friendly places in Texas to rent an RV. If it is your first time renting an RV, choose a Class C motorhome or a campervan (Class B) rather than a 35-foot Class A. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, slides, and dump procedures, and you can message them with questions for the entire trip. Tip: do a short practice loop on FM 308 west of town before pointing toward Waco or Lake Whitney.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never stranded. Every RV rental in West, TX includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also a real person you can message directly through the RVezy app, and most West-area owners respond quickly because they live within 30 minutes of town. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip if anything escalates. Tip: snap photos of the dashboard and the exterior at pickup so any issues are documented, and save your host's number to your phone.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat are the best road trips from West, TX?
An RV road trip from West, TX puts you within a half-day's drive of some of the best scenery in Texas. Head about 20 miles south to Waco for Magnolia Market, the Dr Pepper Museum, and the Waco Mammoth National Monument. Roll about 110 miles south on I-35 to Austin for live music and Lady Bird Lake. Drive about 175 miles southwest to Fredericksburg for Hill Country wineries, or about 245 miles to Galveston Island for Gulf Coast beaches. Big Bend National Park is a longer push west for the adventurous. Cross-border travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but US travel is generally fine, just confirm with your host before crossing state lines.
traveltexas.com/places-to-goWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Texas fuel prices are among the friendliest in the country, which keeps your RV budget happy. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 16 to 22 mpg for a campervan, and 10 to 13 mpg combined for a truck towing a travel trailer. Regular unleaded along I-35 in McLennan and Hill counties usually runs below the national average. For planning, a 200-mile loop from West to Lake Whitney and back in a Class C costs roughly $55 to $80 in fuel at current prices. Tip: fill up at Buc-ee's in Hillsboro or the truck stops near Exit 343 in West for some of the cheapest pumps on your route.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near West, TX?
Booking ahead is easy and pays off. Texas Parks and Wildlife lets you reserve state park sites up to five months in advance, and for spring weekends at Lake Whitney State Park or Mother Neff State Park you will want to grab them the day that five-month window opens. Private RV parks in West, Waco, and Hillsboro usually have more flexibility, often available 2 to 4 weeks out, except over Westfest weekend (Labor Day) when local parks fill up months ahead. Tip: book midweek arrival days (Sunday through Wednesday) to score lakeside sites at Whitney that would be long gone for a Friday check-in.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-whitney/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat are driving conditions like around West, TX?
Driving here is refreshingly straightforward. West sits on a flat, mostly straight stretch of Interstate 35 about 20 miles north of Waco, with wide shoulders and easy exits, ideal for first-time RVers. Watch for two real-world conditions: heavy I-35 truck traffic during weekday rush hours (especially the Waco-to-Hillsboro segment, which has seen ongoing TxDOT expansion work), and Central Texas thunderstorms in spring that can bring sudden crosswinds. Tornado season runs roughly April through June, so check the radar before hitting the road. Avoid driving a tall rig in 30+ mph winds, and stick to I-35 and US-77 rather than narrow county roads if you are new to RVing. Tip: use TxDOT's DriveTexas site for real-time road conditions.
drivetexas.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near West, TX?
You will find a great mix. Lake Whitney State Park offers full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), water-only sites, screened shelters, hot showers, a fish-cleaning station, a boat ramp, and a dump station. Mother Neff State Park has water and electric sites with a central dump station. Most private parks along the I-35 corridor (Hillsboro, West, and north Waco) include 50-amp service, WiFi, laundry, and pool access. For dumping and freshwater fills on travel days, Buc-ee's in Hillsboro and most Flying J locations offer easy access. Tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter, those two inexpensive items unlock the majority of campgrounds you will see during RV camping in West, TX.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-whitney/fees-facilitiesWhat is typically included inside a West, TX RV rental?
You will roll out fully equipped. Most RVs available for rent in West, TX come with a real bed (or two), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, and a furnace for cooler nights. Class C and Class A motorhomes typically include seatbelted seats for 4 to 8 travelers, plus a TV, sometimes a built-in generator, and roof solar on newer rigs. WiFi is usually a hotspot add-on rather than built-in. Each RVezy listing spells out exactly what is included, so you will know before booking whether you need to bring linens, a camp chair, or your own coffee maker. Tip: a campervan rental in West is perfect for couples who want to stay nimble between Waco, Lake Whitney, and Austin.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%2C%20TexasWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with RVezy rentals in West, TX?
Hosts in West, TX make customizing easy. Popular add-ons include bed and bath linen packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generators, portable propane fire pits, bike racks, and pet kits. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or around West, but delivery to a campground or your driveway is offered by many hosts and is a lifesaver for first-timers. Mileage policies vary, so check the listing for free miles and per-mile overage rates before booking. Tip: if you are heading to Westfest or a Baylor football game, ask hosts about festival drop-offs and quick turnarounds when you message them.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%2C%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure, all handled directly through RVezy with no cash changing hands. You pay your trip total with a credit or debit card when you book, and a security deposit is placed as a separate hold on your card shortly before pickup (the amount is set by the host and shown in the listing). As long as you return the RV clean, on time, and damage-free, the hold is released after your trip. To avoid deposit issues: take time-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, top off the fuel and propane to the level you received them, and empty the gray and black tanks if your host requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I find a cheap RV rental in West, TX for a quick weekend?
Affordable getaways are very doable here. For a cheap RV rental in West, TX, look at smaller travel trailers and campervans, which often start around $90 to $130 per night and are perfect for two people exploring Czech Stop, Slovacek's, and Lake Whitney. Filter by price on RVezy, sort low to high, and check midweek dates (Sunday through Thursday) when hosts frequently offer better rates. Choosing a host who delivers to a nearby campground can also save fuel and mileage fees, often making the total trip cheaper than a long road-trip rental. Tip: a family RV trip to West, TX paired with a Waco day at Magnolia Silos and a Lake Whitney swim afternoon makes for a wallet-friendly long weekend.
