Campgrounds and RV parks near West Lake Hills, TX

Water is the main draw. Lake Travis offers deep, clear swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding, and Windy Point Park on Lake Travis is also recognized as one of the top inland scuba diving sites in Texas, with underwater platforms, sunken objects, and on-site air fills for divers. At McKinney Falls State Park, families can swim in Onion Creek, hike and mountain bike shaded Hill Country trails, boulder on limestone outcrops, and pick up a free Junior Ranger activity journal at the visitor center. The park sits about 13 miles from the state capitol, so day trips into downtown Austin for food trucks, museums, and live music are easy. Closer to town, guests at Austin Lone Star RV Resort can swim in a heated pool and reach South Congress, Zilker Park, and Barton Springs within a short drive.

Central Texas has a long RV season but a punishing summer. Spring, from March through May, is the most popular window: wildflowers peak in April, temperatures are mild, and lakes refill from spring storms. May is the wettest single month on average, so afternoon thunderstorms and localized flooding are common. Onion Creek at McKinney Falls can rise quickly after rainfall, and the park advises checking creek conditions before swimming. Summer brings extended stretches of triple-digit heat. Austin averages around 29 days per year at or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Shaded sites, full hookups for air conditioning, and lake access become priorities. Fall, from September through November, is a second peak season with cooler evenings and steady bookings around ACL Fest and University of Texas home games. It is also the wettest season overall in Austin. Winter is mild and dry, with only about one day per year that stays below freezing, making it a strong shoulder season for snowbirds.

Expect a wide range of camping styles within a short radius of West Lake Hills. Austin Lone Star RV Resort offers tree-shaded gravel pads, 30 and 50 amp full hookups, laundry, a dump station, and a seasonal heated pool, though it sits directly along the I-35 frontage road and traffic noise is a common note in reviews. McKinney Falls has 81 campsites, all with water and electric hookups, plus six newly remodeled cabins, spacious shaded sites, and restrooms with hot showers. The park often reaches day-use capacity on weekends. Windy Point Park is primitive and dry, with no hookups. Campers haul gear from the parking lot using provided carts, and should note that pets, glass containers, and fishing are not permitted. Bring plenty of drinking water and expect limited services at some lake sites.
