Camping near Wheeler, Texas
Wheeler sits in the eastern Texas Panhandle in Wheeler County, roughly 15 miles north of Interstate 40 along US Highway 83. The town is best known as the birthplace of Apollo astronaut Alan Bean and as a jumping-off point for the historic Route 66 corridor that runs through nearby McLean and Shamrock. Nearby Mobeetie, in northwestern Wheeler County, developed from a buffalo-hunters' camp called Hidetown established in 1874, growing the following summer as a trading post for nearby Fort Elliott.
RV travelers use Wheeler as a convenient overnight stop between Oklahoma City and Amarillo, or as a base for exploring the panhandle's small museums, ranch country, and Route 66 towns. Options range from simple in-town parking to full-hookup pull-throughs and lakeside sites farther west. Texas Route 66 RV Park and Cactus Inn and RV Parking cater to travelers passing through on the Mother Road, while Bobcat Creek RV Park and Flying W Guest Ranch RV Park offer longer-stay comfort.
For a lake-based trip, North Ramp at Greenbelt Reservoir near Clarendon puts RVs within reach of open water, boat ramps, and fishing about an hour west of Wheeler.
Things to do around Wheeler
The area's biggest draw is history. The Wheeler Historical Museum honors Captain Alan L. Bean, the fourth man to walk on the moon, who was born in Wheeler on March 15, 1932, and displays numerous items from the Apollo 12 mission including Bean's Apollo 12 flight log. A short drive northwest, the small community of Mobeetie preserves frontier history at the Old Mobeetie Jail Museum, and Mobeetie's boom days ended when Fort Elliott closed in 1890, followed by a devastating tornado in 1898 and the loss of the county seat to Wheeler in 1907.
Route 66 fans can drive a short loop south to Shamrock for the restored Tower Station and U-Drop Inn Cafe, then continue west to McLean for the Devil's Rope Museum and the 1929 Phillips 66 station.
For outdoor days, Greenbelt Reservoir near Clarendon offers partial hookup and primitive camping for tents and RVs around a recreational lake with fishing, boating, and a sandy swimming beach for kids.

How to book a campsite
Private RV parks around Wheeler, including Texas Route 66 RV Park, Cactus Inn and RV Parking, Bobcat Creek RV Park, and Flying W Guest Ranch RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites and third-party booking platforms. For overnight Route 66 stops, calling ahead the same day is often enough outside peak summer weekends.
Greenbelt Reservoir is not a state or federal park. The reservoir was constructed without state or federal funds and is the private property of the Greenbelt Municipal and Industrial Water Authority, which provides water for Clarendon, Hedley, Childress, Quanah, and Crowell. Lake information and permits are available from the Greenbelt Filter Plant at 4610 Hwy. 70 North, phone 806-874-3650. Day and annual lake permits are required in addition to any camping fee.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Wheeler is rolling shortgrass prairie broken by mesquite, cottonwoods along creeks, and working ranchland. Cell coverage is generally solid along US 83 and I-40 but can drop on ranch roads. Wind is a constant factor: awnings should be stowed when unattended, and slide toppers see heavy use.
Campgrounds in town are mostly gravel or concrete pads with full hookups aimed at overnight travelers. Sites at Greenbelt Reservoir are more rustic. Water levels at Greenbelt Lake fluctuate seasonally, and camping sites currently sit a significant distance from the water's edge. Check current lake conditions before towing a boat.
Groceries, fuel, and basic supplies are available in Wheeler and Shamrock. For larger runs, Amarillo lies about 90 minutes west on I-40.
