Henefer is a small town in Summit County, northeastern Utah, along the Weber River at the junction of I-84 and I-80. The area sits at roughly 5,300 feet elevation on the western edge of Echo Canyon, with quick access to reservoir-based state parks and private RV resorts within a short drive. Echo State Park, on Echo Reservoir near Coalville, is the closest developed camping option and centers on lake recreation. East Canyon State Park lies about 30 minutes west over the ridge and operates two campgrounds: Dixie Creek on the north end of the reservoir near the marina, and Big Rock on the south end. Both parks are managed by Utah State Parks. For full-hookup RV travel, Echo Island RV Resort sits along the Weber River minutes from Henefer, and Como Springs Resort is about 20 minutes north near Morgan. Together these five properties cover the range from primitive lakeside sites to serviced RV resorts, making Henefer a practical base for exploring the Wasatch Back.

Things to do near Henefer

Water recreation dominates the summer calendar. Echo Reservoir supports kayaking, paddleboarding, wakeboarding, and fishing, and East Canyon Reservoir spreads over 684 acres with fishing for trout, bass, and other species. Both reservoirs have boat ramps and docks. On land, the historic Union Pacific Rail Trail runs south from Echo toward Park City, offering a long, gentle route for biking and walking. The Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail runs just east of East Canyon State Park along Utah Highway 65, with markers at the park and interpretive stops on the pioneer route through the Wasatch. Anglers based at Como Springs Resort have direct access to the Weber River, a designated blue ribbon fishery, right from the property. In winter, Echo State Park draws ice anglers, and snowmobiles are allowed on the frozen East Canyon Reservoir with the appropriate permits.

Summer, from Memorial Day through Labor Day, is peak season. Reservoir levels are highest in early summer, beaches are open, and campgrounds fill on weekends. From May 1 through September 30, campsites at Echo State Park require advanced reservations through Reserve America, and sites are first-come, first-served between October 1 and April 30. Expect warm, dry afternoons and cool nights at over 5,000 feet of elevation. Spring and fall bring smaller crowds and cooler temperatures. Water services shut down for the shoulder seasons: at East Canyon, water is turned off during the winter months, approximately mid-October to mid-April, and the main showers at Dixie Creek follow the same schedule. Winter closes some facilities but not the parks. Big Rock Campground is closed during winter, while Dixie Campground remains open for walk-in reservations with water off, vault restrooms near the campground, and full facility restrooms open year-round near the General Store. Echo State Park is a popular ice-fishing destination in winter.

We enjoyed our stay in this camper! We did a tour SLC - Page - Monument Valley - Arches in three days and this RV was up for the job. It is a bit older model, quite some engine/wind noise while on the road, so our third party member sometimes felt a bit left out sitting in the back. But sleeping comfort was great and it is just the right size to be able to access a diverse range of campgrounds. Also good contact with the owner! Responds to questions very fast and provides an elaborate briefing. Thank you for letting us stay in your RV!

Kiesha and Dan were some of the best hosts I’ve ever met when traveling. This was our first ever rv camping experience but they made it super easy and comfortable. They set the bar high for us, especially the communication. They would respond immediately and accurately whenever we needed anything and we really appreciated that. The van was everything in the description if not more. It’s very spacious yet cozy, perfect for a family trip. It is also easy to maneuver, the sensors and cameras really added to it as well. Our family of four had a fantastic week in Kiesha’s Solis exploring Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. The RV made camping a dream! How to book

The two state parks use the Utah State Parks reservation system through Reserve America. Campsites and yurts are available for reservation on a four-month rolling basis; for example, on January 10 individual sites are available through May 10, and bookings can extend a maximum of 13 days beyond the last date of the reservation window. Phone bookings go through the reservation call center at 800-322-3770, Monday through Friday, Mountain Time. Outside the May 1 to September 30 peak window at Echo, sites are first-come, first-served, so calling the park before arrival is worthwhile on busy weekends. Echo Island RV Resort and Como Springs Resort take reservations directly through their own websites. Group areas at Como Springs require an email inquiry to the resort managers to confirm availability.

What to expect on site

Site amenities vary widely across the five nearby options. Echo State Park has a boat ramp, boat docks, and a campground with 18 sites featuring 50-amp and 30-amp electrical and water, plus a group campsite with 5 power and water sites. Dixie Creek Campground offers 33 sites for RV camping, some full hookups and others partial, with restrooms and showers, though water is turned off from mid-October to mid-April. Big Rock sits on the south end of East Canyon Reservoir with vault restrooms and no power or water hookups, and it offers little shade. Como Springs Resort has 38 full-hookup RV sites plus two large group areas for trailers and RVs, with guest restrooms and showers on site. Firewood collection is prohibited in the state parks, so pack your own.
