Campgrounds near Loa, Utah
Loa is a small town in Wayne County, Utah, sitting in a broad valley west of the Fremont River between Fishlake National Forest to the north and Capitol Reef National Park to the east. At roughly 7,045 feet, it is one of the highest county seats in Utah and functions as a practical basecamp for RV travelers headed to Capitol Reef, offering gas, groceries, and basic services on the western approach to the park.
RV options close to town run from full-hookup private parks to lakeside and forest campgrounds a short drive away. Fremont River RV sits in Loa itself, while Thousand Lakes RV Park, Sandcreek RV Park, and Wonderland RV Park cluster around Torrey along Highway 24, roughly 15 minutes from the Capitol Reef visitor center. Bowery Haven Resort and RV Park is up on Fish Lake, a high-elevation lake north of town.
Inside Capitol Reef, the developed option is Fruita Campground, set among historic orchards in the Fruita Historic District with 71 sites, flush toilets, potable water, and a dump station. Two primitive park campgrounds, Cathedral Valley and Cedar Mesa, require high-clearance vehicles.
Things to do near Loa
Capitol Reef National Park is the main draw, offering scenic drives, hikes, arches, petroglyphs, and the Historic Fruita District settled by Mormon pioneers in the late 1800s. Visitors can pick fruit in season from the historic orchards, which contain approximately 3,100 cherry, apricot, peach, pear, apple, plum, mulberry, almond, and walnut trees.
Fish Lake, about 40 minutes north of Loa, is a summer hub for boating and fishing. It is Utah's largest natural mountain lake, roughly six miles long and one mile wide at about 8,800 feet elevation, famous for trophy mackinaw lake trout and also holding rainbow trout, splake, kokanee salmon, and yellow perch.
ATV and UTV riders use Boulder Mountain trails and the surrounding Fishlake National Forest, which contains hundreds of miles of OHV routes. Stargazing is another draw: Capitol Reef is a certified International Dark Sky Park.

Loa sits at high elevation on the edge of the Awapa Plateau, so seasons run cold and short. Winters bring hard freezes and regular snowfall, and most private RV parks in the area operate on a shortened calendar. Bowery Haven at Fish Lake closes in mid-September for the season and reopens reservations in mid-November for the following summer. Fremont River RV in Loa is one of the few that stays open through the cold months.
Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with big temperature swings, and snow is possible into April at these elevations. Peak season at Capitol Reef runs March through October, with spring and fall the busiest months for Fruita Campground and summer bringing reliably warm days and cool nights thanks to elevation.
Late-summer monsoon storms can bring flash floods to slot canyons and dirt roads in Capitol Reef. Fishlake National Forest campgrounds around Fish Lake typically operate late spring through early fall, and the Loop C bathhouse at Fruita Campground closes in winter due to a risk of freezing pipes, approximately mid-November to mid-March.
Booking a site near Loa
Inside Capitol Reef, Fruita Campground uses Recreation.gov year-round. The park moved away from first-come, first-served in the offseason and now runs a single reservation model for all 65 reservable sites. The booking window opens exactly six months in advance at 10:00 AM Mountain Time; to camp on July 15, book on January 15 at 10:00 AM MT. Popular spring and fall weekends fill within minutes of release. The group site opens further in advance.
The two primitive park campgrounds, Cathedral Valley and Cedar Mesa, remain first-come, first-served with no reservation system.
Private RV parks around Loa and Torrey take direct bookings through their own websites or by phone. Fish Lake sites through Bowery Haven open in mid-November for the following season and fill quickly for summer weekends. Forest Service campgrounds around Fish Lake are bookable through Recreation.gov.
What to expect
Expect a quiet, small-town feel. Loa has a grocery store, gas, and basic services, but dining and shopping are limited compared to Torrey about 30 minutes east. Cell service is patchy, and Capitol Reef has no cellular service inside the park, including at all campgrounds, so download maps before heading out.
Full hookups are available at private parks like Fremont River RV, Thousand Lakes RV Park, Sandcreek RV Park, Wonderland RV Park, and Bowery Haven Resort and RV Park. Fruita Campground inside Capitol Reef has no hookups and is dry camping only, with a dump station and water fill station for self-contained RVs and sites that generally accommodate rigs up to about 30 feet.
Elevation matters. Loa sits above 7,000 feet, and Fish Lake campgrounds are higher still, so nights are cool even in July and afternoon thunderstorms are common in monsoon season. Bring layers, secure awnings against wind, and watch fire restrictions posted at trailheads and campground kiosks.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Loa, UT
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Loa, UT?
RV rental in Loa is one of the best values in Utah for accessing Capitol Reef National Park without paying Moab or Springdale prices. Expect roughly $90 to $175 per night for travel trailers, $150 to $250 for Class C motorhomes, and $250 plus for Class A coaches, with June through August commanding peak rates around the park's busy season. You can stretch your budget by booking midweek, traveling in May or late September when weather is still pleasant, and filtering for travel trailers if you already have a tow vehicle. Pro tip: hosts in nearby Richfield and Bicknell often list slightly lower rates than Loa proper while still being under 30 minutes from Capitol Reef's Fruita district.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Loa%2C%20UtahWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Loa, Utah?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Loa. There is no special RV endorsement or commercial driver's license required for any motorhome or trailer on the RVezy platform, even larger Class A coaches. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the booking process, so there's no extra paperwork to chase down. Visiting from abroad to explore Capitol Reef country? Bring an International Driving Permit from your home auto club along with your home license, and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the approval is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Loa protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Loa includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore the roads around Capitol Reef with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers damage to the RV during your trip, and during checkout you can choose between different coverage levels depending on how much extra cushion you want. This complements rather than replaces your personal coverage, and gives renters meaningful financial protection. Pro tip: if you're planning side trips on graded roads like the Burr Trail or Notom-Bullfrog Road, consider a higher protection tier for extra confidence on Utah's scenic backroads.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Loa RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a clear, consistent cancellation policy on every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after you book so you can plan with confidence. Cancellation outcomes depend on how many days before your trip you cancel. Hosts do not set their own cancellation rules, RVezy handles this consistently across every listing, and if a host cancels you receive a refund or travel credit. If conditions change before your trip, such as a winter storm affecting Highway 24 into Capitol Reef, contact RVezy support right away. Pro tip: book your RV first to lock in the rig you want, then chase campground reservations.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Loa?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Loa, and you can find them in seconds using the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Capitol Reef National Park allows leashed pets in campgrounds, picnic areas, and on paved roads, and nearby Fishlake National Forest is even more dog-welcoming with miles of leashed-pet trails around Fish Lake itself. Many hosts ask for a small pet fee or extra cleaning charge, which will be visible right on the listing. Pro tip: bring a portable shade canopy and extra water, since the high desert sun at Loa's 7,000-foot elevation hits dogs harder than they expect, especially on summer afternoons near the red rock.
nps.gov/care/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan a host deliver the RV to my campground near Loa?
Yes, RV delivery in Loa is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're flying into Salt Lake City or Las Vegas and driving down. Many hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome rental in Loa directly at popular spots like Fruita Campground in Capitol Reef, Sunglow Campground in Bicknell, or Thousand Lakes RV Park in Torrey, then walk you through every system before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter and message the host for a quote, since delivery fees typically run by the mile. Pro tip: delivery is gold for first-time renters tackling Utah's scenic byways, you skip the stress of driving an unfamiliar rig and start your trip already parked at the campsite.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Loa%2C%20UtahHow far can I drive on a Loa RV trip, and what about mileage policies?
You have tons of range from Loa, which sits in the heart of Utah's Mighty 5 country. Bryce Canyon is about 90 miles southwest (under 2 hours), Zion National Park is roughly 170 miles (3.5 hours), Moab and Arches sit 145 miles east (about 2.5 hours), Goblin Valley State Park is 75 miles north, and Lake Powell at Bullfrog Marina is 110 miles south. Hosts set their own mileage policies, with options ranging from 100 free miles per night to RV rental with unlimited mileage, all clearly shown on each listing. Pro tip: if you're planning the full Mighty 5 loop, filter for unlimited mileage upfront, it usually saves money versus paying $0.35 to $0.50 per extra mile.
visitutah.com/places-to-go/parks-outdoors/the-mighty-5Where should I stay in my RV near Loa?
Loa has some of the best campgrounds near Capitol Reef, and you've got options for every style. Fruita Campground inside Capitol Reef National Park is the showstopper with orchards and red cliffs, but it books up fast on Recreation.gov. Thousand Lakes RV Park in Torrey offers full hookups, a pool, and is 11 miles from the park entrance. Sandcreek RV Park in Torrey is a smaller, friendly option with hookups and tent sites. Sunglow Campground in Bicknell (Fishlake National Forest) gives you shaded sites under cottonwoods. Wonderland RV Park in Torrey rounds it out with pull-through sites. Pro tip: book Fruita 6 months ahead the day reservations open, it's the most coveted in-park site in southern Utah.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234064When is the best time to visit Loa in an RV?
The sweet spot for RV camping Loa is mid-May through mid-October, with late September and early October being the local insider's favorite, cottonwoods in Fruita turn gold, crowds thin out, and daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 75 degree range. Summer (June through August) brings warm 80 degree days and cool 50 degree nights at Loa's 7,000 foot elevation, perfect for sleeping with windows open, though afternoon monsoon thunderstorms are common in July and August. Winter is a different adventure entirely with snow, ice, and lows in the teens. Pro tip: aim for the week after Labor Day. You'll get peak weather, easier campground reservations, and Capitol Reef's apple harvest season at the Fruita orchards.
nps.gov/care/planyourvisit/weather.htmI'm a first-time renter, will I actually feel ready to drive?
You'll be more ready than you think. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, showing you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump valves, and you can ask every question that comes to mind. If you're nervous about driving, choose delivery so the RV is already parked and leveled when you arrive. First time renting an RV around Loa is honestly a great place to start: Highway 24 is wide, well-paved, and lightly trafficked compared to busier national park gateways. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pickup time and ask for a quick video tour of the rig, most hosts are happy to send one and it makes day-one feel effortless.
udot.utah.gov/connect/public/road-conditions/What happens if I have a breakdown or roadside issue near Loa?
You're covered, every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're parked in Loa, climbing Boulder Mountain on Scenic Byway 12, or rolling through Capitol Reef's slickrock country. Roadside support handles common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Cell service can be spotty along Highway 12 and inside Capitol Reef, so screenshot your booking details before heading out. Pro tip: the nearest full-service auto shops are in Richfield (about 70 miles northwest) and Hanksville (about 75 miles east), good to know before tackling remote sections of the Burr Trail or Cathedral Valley.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Loa?
An RV road trip from Loa unlocks some of America's most scenic driving. Scenic Byway 12 south through Boulder and Escalante to Bryce Canyon is widely called one of the most beautiful drives in the country, roughly 125 miles of red rock and aspen. The Mighty 5 loop pairs Capitol Reef with Arches and Canyonlands (Moab is 2.5 hours east) plus Bryce and Zion to the southwest. The Cathedral Valley loop is a rugged backcountry option for high-clearance rigs only. Lake Powell at Bullfrog is a 2-hour shot south for houseboat-meets-RV adventures. Pro tip: drive Scenic Byway 12 east to west in late afternoon, the light on the Hogback ridge near Boulder is unreal, and pullouts are RV-friendly.
scenicbyway12.com/What should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Loa?
Fuel is a real line item but very manageable with planning. Expect 7 to 10 miles per gallon for Class A and large Class C motorhomes, 12 to 18 mpg for Class B campervans and travel trailer setups, and Utah gas prices that typically run near or a bit above the national average, with the cheapest stations in Richfield. Wayne County has only a handful of stations, so fill up in Loa, Bicknell, or Torrey before heading deep into Capitol Reef or down Scenic Byway 12. Pro tip: there is limited fuel between Boulder and Escalante along a remote stretch of byway, so top off in Boulder. A rough Mighty 5 loop from Loa often runs $300 to $500 in fuel depending on rig size.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Loa?
Book early and you'll have your pick. Fruita Campground inside Capitol Reef opens reservations exactly 6 months in advance on Recreation.gov and the prime spring and fall dates sell out within minutes of release at 10 a.m. Eastern. Private parks like Thousand Lakes RV Park and Wonderland RV Park in Torrey typically need 2 to 3 months of lead time for summer weekends. Fishlake National Forest campgrounds (Sunglow, Doctor Creek, Mackinaw) take reservations 6 months out as well but usually have more availability midweek. Pro tip: set a Recreation.gov account up before booking opens, save Fruita to your favorites, and have a backup date ready, you'll snag the site in under a minute if you're prepared.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2991What are driving conditions like around Loa?
Driving around Loa is genuinely RV-friendly, this isn't congested mountain country, it's wide-open high desert with light traffic. Highway 24 through town is paved, well-maintained, and easy in any rig. Scenic Byway 12 over Boulder Mountain climbs to 9,600 feet with grades up to 8 percent, so use lower gears descending and check brakes before you go. The notorious Hogback section near Boulder has steep drop-offs but is fully paved and doable in a Class C with patience. Avoid Cathedral Valley, Burr Trail switchbacks, and Notom Road in larger motorhomes, those are high-clearance dirt routes. Pro tip: check UDOT road conditions the morning you drive, summer monsoons can briefly flood low spots on Highway 24 east of Capitol Reef.
udot.utah.gov/connect/public/road-conditions/What hookups and amenities do campgrounds near Loa offer?
You'll find a great mix. Thousand Lakes RV Park and Wonderland RV Park in Torrey offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, and dump stations. Sandcreek RV Park has water and electric with a centralized dump. Fruita Campground inside Capitol Reef has potable water fill stations and a dump station but no hookups at the sites, so you'll boondock with your tanks. Fishlake National Forest campgrounds typically offer potable water and vault toilets but no electric. Pro tip: top off fresh water at Fruita's fill station before any backcountry side trips, and use the free dump station just outside the campground on your way out, it saves you a stop at a paid RV park later.
nps.gov/care/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat equipment comes with a typical RV rental in Loa?
Most RVs in Loa come trip-ready. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on rig size, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelted travel seats for everyone riding. Many listings include a generator for boondocking at Fruita or Cathedral Valley, a TV, and onboard fresh, gray, and black water tanks. Wi-Fi is hit or miss since cell signal is weak around Capitol Reef anyway. Listings spell out exactly what's included, and many hosts offer add-ons like camp chairs, outdoor mats, bedding kits, and bike racks. Pro tip: confirm generator hours and propane fill status with your host, you'll want both running strong for cold high-desert nights.
nps.gov/care/planyourvisit/things2do.htmWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
Hosts in Loa offer a lot of flexibility. Common add-ons include linen and bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generator hours beyond the included allotment, bike racks, and propane refills. Pickup is usually at the host's property in Loa, Bicknell, Torrey, or Richfield, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Many hosts offer delivery for a per-mile fee straight to Fruita, Sunglow, or Thousand Lakes. Mileage policies are listed on every listing, ranging from 100 free miles per night to unlimited mileage. Pro tip: for the Mighty 5 loop or a Lake Powell run, the unlimited mileage option almost always pencils out cheaper than paying overage fees, do the math on the listing page before you book.
visitutah.com/places-to-go/parks-outdoors/the-mighty-5How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. At booking you'll typically pay a portion upfront with the balance due before your trip, all clearly itemized on your reservation page. A security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after your trip ends, assuming no damage or extra cleaning is needed. Deposit amounts vary by rig and are shown on each listing. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video with the host at both pickup and drop-off, time-stamped phone footage is the easiest way to keep your deposit refund smooth, especially after dusty drives through Capitol Reef.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I find a cheap RV rental in Loa for a family trip?
Yes, a family RV trip from Loa is very budget-friendly compared to gateway towns like Moab or Springdale. The cheapest options are usually travel trailers (if you have a tow vehicle) starting around $75 to $110 per night, or smaller Class C motorhomes that sleep 4 to 6 from about $140 per night. Stack savings by traveling mid-September through mid-October, booking Sunday through Thursday, and choosing Fruita Campground inside Capitol Reef at around $25 per night instead of full-hookup parks at $50 to $70. Pro tip: kids can join the Capitol Reef Junior Ranger program with a free booklet at the visitor center, and the Gifford Homestead pies in Fruita are a beloved local tradition.
