Campgrounds near Virgin, Utah
Virgin sits on State Route 9 in Washington County, about 14 miles west of the south entrance to Zion National Park. The town works well as a quieter, lower-cost basecamp for RV travelers who want access to Zion Canyon without staying inside Springdale's tighter streets and busier lots.
Private RV parks along the SR-9 corridor handle most rental-rig traffic. Zion River Resort RV Park and Campground sits on the Virgin River with full-hookup pads and pull-throughs, while WillowWind RV Park offers a smaller, quieter option closer to town. West toward Hurricane, Sand Hollow RV Resort pairs full-service sites with reservoir access nearby. Farther west near I-15, Range RV Campground and Leeds RV Park and Motel give travelers an easy overnight stop between Zion and St. George.
Public campgrounds in the area, including in-park Zion sites and nearby state parks, use separate reservation systems and fill faster than the private parks along SR-9.
Things to do near Virgin
Zion National Park is the main draw. From roughly March through November, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is accessed by shuttle bus, with the boarding point at the visitor center in Springdale. Popular day hikes include the Watchman Trail, Pa'rus, Emerald Pools, and Angels Landing, which requires a permit obtained through a Recreation.gov lottery.
Outside the park, Kolob Terrace Road climbs north from Virgin into higher-elevation trailheads for The Subway and West Rim. Sand Hollow State Park, about 25 minutes west, gives direct access to over 15,000 acres of dunes on Sand Mountain, a favorite destination for OHV enthusiasts, and adds warm-water swimming and boating on the reservoir. Quail Creek State Park and the Red Cliffs area near Leeds offer additional hiking and paddling within a short drive.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Virgin. Daytime highs sit in the sixties and seventies, canyon temperatures are workable for long hikes, and private campgrounds along SR-9 are open. Spring runoff can make the Virgin River fast and cold, and the Narrows is often closed to hikers during peak snowmelt.
Summer brings intense heat in the canyon, with afternoon highs regularly in the nineties and higher-elevation zones on Kolob Terrace running noticeably cooler. The North American Monsoon typically arrives in July and August, producing sudden thunderstorms and flash-flood risk in slot canyons. The National Park Service posts a daily flash-flood potential rating.
Winters are cold but usable. Watchman Campground stays open year-round, with all sites reserved via Recreation.gov up to 6 months in advance for standard sites or 12 months for group sites, and some private parks near Virgin stay open with limited services. The road to Lava Point closes in winter and during inclement weather, with the campground operating May through September or October depending on snow.

Wonderful experience! Shaunna was great to work with! Prompt communication. She delivered and set-up, and was flexible with our arrival and departure times. Had an amazing time at Zion!

Loved our experience with Sandy from start to finish. He communicated very well, including letting us know about the need to reserve a campsite ahead of time. The camper was very well stocked with kitchen items. The beds were soft and well prepared. They met us when we arrived to set up the RV and explain everything. The weather was very cold and so the water froze one morning. Sandy came right over within minutes and helped us get it going again. Very nice people and very honest. There were extra things we had ordered that we didn’t need so he offered to takeoff those charges. We would absolutely come back and use them again. We were a family with small children and they even agreed that it felt like home. Thank you for a great experience!
Catherine R. - Jan 2026
Sandy's bunkhouse RV trailer was amazing and had pretty much all the amenities we needed! Sandy was super communicative and helpful throughout the entire process. The delivery/pickup was smooth and easy, would definitely recommend to anyone!

How to book campgrounds
Private RV parks near Virgin, including Zion River Resort RV Park and Campground, WillowWind RV Park, Sand Hollow RV Resort, Range RV Campground, and Leeds RV Park and Motel, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, generally on rolling windows up to a year out. Weekends in spring and fall book earliest.
Watchman Campground inside Zion is reserved on Recreation.gov, with standard sites available up to 6 months in advance; popular dates sell out within minutes. For Lava Point, book as soon as the 14-day window opens on Recreation.gov, and South Campground reservations remain suspended while the campground is closed for long-term rehabilitation. Sand Hollow State Park campsites are available for reservation on a four-month rolling basis through ReserveAmerica.
What to expect on the ground
SR-9 through Virgin is a two-lane highway with speed changes as it enters Rockville and Springdale. Large rigs headed east through Zion should note that the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel restricts oversized vehicles and requires a tunnel permit; rigs exceeding the limits must detour via SR-59 and UT-389.
Cell coverage along SR-9 is generally reliable but drops inside side canyons and on Kolob Terrace Road. Grocery, fuel, and propane services are concentrated in Hurricane and La Verkin to the west and in Springdale to the east, so travelers staying in Virgin usually stock up before arrival.
Summer sites can be exposed and shadeless, and cottonwood shade near the Virgin River makes a real difference. The park charges a separate entrance fee, and the America the Beautiful pass is accepted.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Virgin, UT
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Virgin, UT?
RV rental in Virgin, UT is one of the most affordable ways to experience Zion National Park, since you skip both pricey Springdale hotels and park shuttle hassles. On RVezy, travel trailers typically run about $80 to $150 per night, campervans around $125 to $200, and Class C motorhomes roughly $175 to $300, depending on size, season, and add-ons. Spring (March through May) is peak Zion season and prices climb, so booking 2 to 3 months ahead locks in the best rates. For a cheap RV rental Virgin UT trip, target January, early February, or late November when nightly rates can drop 30 to 40 percent and the red rock is just as stunning. Pro tip: bundle delivery to your campground to save on fuel.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Virgin%2C%20UtahWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Virgin, UT?
Your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Virgin, UT. Utah does not require a Commercial Driver License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers rented through RVezy, even for Class A rigs. Approved drivers must generally be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform when you book, so there's no paperwork shuffle at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is, you'll be cruising Highway 9 toward Zion in no time.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental in Virgin, UT protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, and that's one of the best parts of booking through RVezy. Every RV rental in Virgin, UT includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Kolob Terrace Road or a dead battery at Watchman Campground won't derail your trip. The protection plan covers eligible damages to the vehicle, giving you real financial peace of mind without buying separate coverage. During checkout you choose your level of protection (not the host), so you can pick what fits your comfort level. For the vast majority of renters heading into Zion country, it's exactly the safety net that turns 'maybe someday' into 'booking it now.'
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Virgin, UT RV trip?
You can book with confidence: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you're never locked in the moment you click confirm. Refund eligibility after that grace window depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credit so you're not left stranded. The full details live in the RVezy Help Center, but the short version is simple: there's a clear, consistent policy applied to every booking, so you can plan your Zion adventure now and adjust later if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Virgin, UT?
Yes, your dog is welcome on plenty of trips. Filter for 'Pet-Friendly' on RVezy to instantly find pet-friendly RV rental Virgin UT options, and message the host to confirm any specifics like deposits or breed notes. Zion National Park has strict pet rules: dogs are only allowed on the paved Pa'rus Trail and are not permitted on shuttles or other trails, so plan dog-friendly outings outside the park. Great alternatives nearby include the Hurricane Cliffs trail system, Sand Hollow State Park (about 20 minutes away with dog-friendly beaches), and Snow Canyon State Park near St. George. Zion River Resort in Virgin even has fenced dog areas on-site, making it a stress-free basecamp.
nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Virgin, UT?
Yes, RV delivery Virgin UT is one of the smartest ways to do this trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many hosts will drop the rig directly at Zion River Resort, Zion White Bison Resort, or Watchman Campground inside Zion National Park, then level it, hook up water, sewer, and electric, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. That means no towing, no backing into a tight site, and no learning curve on day one. Delivery fees vary by distance, but for travelers flying into St. George Regional Airport (about 35 miles west), it's often the difference between a stressful pickup and a vacation that starts the second you arrive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Virgin%2C%20UtahHow far can I drive on a Virgin, UT RV trip?
Plenty far, southern Utah is built for an epic Virgin, UT RV trip. visitutah.com/places-to-go/parks-outdoors/the-mighty-5Where should I stay in my RV near Virgin, UT?
You're in one of the best campground corridors in the country. Top picks right in or near Virgin include Zion River Resort (full hookups along the Virgin River, heated pool, about 14 miles from Zion's entrance), Zion White Bison Resort (concrete pull-through sites with a shuttle to the park), and options in nearby La Verkin and Hurricane that welcome big rigs. Inside Zion National Park, Watchman Campground offers electric hookup and tent sites a short walk from the south entrance. For the best campgrounds near Virgin UT, book through Recreation.gov up to 6 months in advance for in-park sites, since they sell out fast March through November.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234659When is the best time to visit Virgin, UT in an RV?
Spring and fall are the sweet spot for RV camping Virgin UT. March through May brings highs typically in the 65 to 85 F range, wildflowers along the Virgin River, and ideal hiking weather for Angels Landing or The Narrows. September through early November cools back to the 70s and 80s with golden cottonwoods lighting up the canyon. Summer (June through August) is hot, regularly 95 to 105 F, so plan early-morning hikes and lean on your RV's air conditioning during midday. Winter (December through February) drops into the 30s to 50s with rare snow at valley elevation, and it's a quiet time with discounted rentals and fewer crowds. Insider tip: weekday visits in late October feel like you have Zion to yourself.
weather.gov/slc/I've never rented an RV before, can I really do this in Virgin, UT?
Yes, and Virgin is genuinely one of the easiest places to start. If it's your first time renting an RV, your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, slides, leveling, the generator, and dump procedures, and you'll have their number for questions throughout the trip. Highway 9 from Hurricane to Virgin is a wide, gentle two-lane road with steady traffic and no scary mountain passes until you enter Zion itself. Choose delivery for zero-stress setup, or pick a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for an easy first drive. Pro tip: spend your first night at a full-hookup park like Zion River Resort, it's a forgiving way to learn the systems before heading deeper into the park.
nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/driving.htmWhat happens if my RV breaks down near Zion National Park?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so whether you're on Highway 9 heading into Zion, climbing Kolob Terrace Road, or parked at a remote BLM site near Hurricane Cliffs, help is one phone call away. Common roadside services include tire changes, jump starts, fuel delivery, lockout help, and towing coordination. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after every trip if you need to reach your host or sort out a bigger issue. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave cell service near Kolob, where coverage gets patchy past the Lava Point turnoff.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Virgin, UT?
Virgin is the launch pad for some of the most iconic drives in America. Popular routes for an RV road trip from Virgin, UT include Bryce Canyon National Park (about 85 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes northeast via Highway 9 and US-89), the Grand Canyon North Rim (about 125 miles, roughly 2 hours 30 minutes south), Las Vegas (about 160 miles, 2 hours 30 minutes southwest on I-15), Cedar Breaks National Monument (about 60 miles, 1 hour 15 minutes north), and Capitol Reef National Park (about 220 miles, 4 hours via Scenic Byway 12, one of the most beautiful drives in the US). Heads up: the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel requires an oversize permit for RVs taller than 11 feet 4 inches or wider than 7 feet 10 inches. Mexico travel is not allowed on RVezy rentals.
nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/the-zion-mount-carmel-tunnel.htmHow much will fuel cost for my Virgin, UT RV trip?
Easier to budget than you'd think. Most Class C motorhomes in Virgin average 8 to 12 MPG, campervans get 16 to 22 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG combined). Utah gas prices typically run close to the national average, with stations in Hurricane and La Verkin being the closest and most affordable. Fill up there rather than in Springdale, where prices jump. For a 4-night Zion-focused trip with day drives into the park, budget roughly $100 to $250 in fuel for most rigs. Pro tip: park the RV at your campground and use the free Zion shuttle (typically running spring through fall) inside the park, you'll save fuel and skip the parking headache.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Virgin, UT?
Book early, this corridor is one of the most reserved campground zones in the National Park System. Watchman Campground inside Zion releases sites up to 6 months in advance on Recreation.gov and routinely sells out quickly for March through November dates. Private parks like Zion River Resort and Zion White Bison Resort fill 2 to 4 months ahead for spring and fall weekends. South Campground inside Zion typically uses a rolling advance reservation window through Recreation.gov, useful for shorter-notice trips. Pro tip for last-minute bookings: check Recreation.gov daily when cancellations release, or ask your RVezy host about lesser-known BLM dispersed sites along Kolob Terrace Road and the Hurricane Cliffs system that don't require reservations.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234659What are the driving conditions like around Virgin, UT?
Very manageable for RVs, with a couple of spots worth knowing. Highway 9 through Virgin is a smooth, well-maintained two-lane road, and I-15 to Hurricane and St. George is wide and modern. The big consideration is the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel inside the park: RVs over 11 feet 4 inches tall or 7 feet 10 inches wide need an oversize permit and traffic is held while you drive through the center. Kolob Terrace Road is paved but narrow and winding, with vehicles over 19 feet not allowed past Lava Point. Summer thunderstorms (July through September monsoon season) can cause flash flooding, so check forecasts before driving canyon roads. Winter occasionally brings ice at higher elevations, but the Virgin valley itself stays driveable year-round.
udottraffic.utah.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Virgin, UT?
Most campgrounds near Virgin punch well above their weight. Zion River Resort offers full hookups (50-amp electric, water, sewer), WiFi, a heated pool and hot tub, laundry, a market, and a dump station. Zion White Bison Resort has concrete pads with full hookups and a shuttle to Zion. Watchman Campground inside the park has electric-only sites with potable water and an RV dump station near the entrance, but no sewer hookups at the sites. For dump and fresh water on the road, the Hurricane Valley area has multiple options. Cell coverage is solid in Virgin and Springdale, spotty in Kolob, and limited deep in the park.
nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Virgin, UT?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental Virgin UT comes fully equipped: a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (most sleep 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both furnace and AC (critical for 100 F Zion summers), a generator or solar for off-grid power, and seatbelts for every passenger. Many include outdoor awnings, camp chairs, and BBQs for sunset dinners overlooking the red cliffs. WiFi and TV vary by host, so ask before booking if streaming matters. Kitchen kits, linens, and bedding are often available as add-ons. Check the listing's amenities section for the full inventory of your specific rig.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Virgin%2C%20UtahWhat add-ons and pickup options can I choose for my RV in Virgin, UT?
Lots of flexibility to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for a campervan rental Virgin UT or motorhome rental include delivery and setup (often priced per mile from the host's location), generator hours, kitchen and linen kits, camping chairs and tables, bike racks, and pre-stocked propane and full water tanks. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in Virgin, Hurricane, or St. George, with a 45 to 60 minute walkthrough covering every system. Mileage policies vary, some hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per day, others include unlimited mileage, ideal for a 'Mighty 5' loop. Message the host with your itinerary and they'll often tailor a package, especially for trips of 5 or more nights.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Virgin%2C%20UtahHow does payment and the security deposit work for my Virgin, UT RV rental?
Simple and transparent. When you book an RV rental in Virgin, UT through RVezy, payment runs securely through the platform, no cash exchanged with the host. You'll see the nightly rate, fees, protection plan, and any add-ons clearly itemized at checkout. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (the amount is shown on the listing and varies by RV value), and it's released back to you after the trip assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. Avoid issues by doing a thorough pre-trip walkaround with the host and snapping photos of the exterior, interior, and odometer. Return with a clean rig, empty tanks (or pay the dump fee), and a full fuel tank, then watch that deposit refund hit your account.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle summer heat in an RV near Zion?
Plan smart and you'll stay cool even when Zion hits 105 F. Daytime highs in June, July, and August regularly climb above 95 F in the Virgin valley, so book a rental with strong roof-mounted air conditioning and ask the host about generator runtime if you're going off-grid. Park in shaded sites when possible (Zion River Resort has mature shade trees), keep awnings extended on the sun side, and hit the trails before 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m. The Narrows is a great midday escape, you're literally walking through cool river water. Insider tip: shoulder seasons (April to May and September to October) deliver the same red rock magic with 75 to 85 F days, lower RV rental rates, and far smaller crowds.
