Lake Mead National Recreation Area is the main outdoor draw, with boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, stargazing, and wildlife viewing across desert and lakeside terrain. Hoover Dam tours run daily on the Arizona border, and the Historic Railroad Trail from Boulder City delivers an easy, family-friendly hike with tunnel sections and lake views. Valley of Fire State Park sits about 55 miles northeast and rewards the drive with red Aztec sandstone, petroglyphs, and short trails like Fire Wave, Mouse's Tank, and White Domes. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area lies on the west side of the valley for scenic driving and hiking. Closer in, Henderson's Water Street district, the Las Vegas Strip, and Lake Las Vegas offer restaurants, shows, and easy day-trip options when the family wants a break from the desert.

Nighttime lows can dip near freezing in December and January, so expect chilly mornings even when afternoons are mild.

Expect a dry, high-desert environment with wide temperature swings between day and night. Full-hookup private parks in Henderson generally offer paved sites, laundry, Wi-Fi, and pools, while National Park Service campgrounds inside Lake Mead have restrooms, running water, picnic tables, and grills but no hookups at the NPS-run sites; a dump station is available at Boulder Beach. Concession-run RV campgrounds within the recreation area do include hookups.
