Campgrounds and RV parks near Wendover, UT

The Bonneville Salt Flats are the headline attraction. Visitors take the signed exit off I-80, drive to the end of the access road, and can walk or drive onto the salt when it is dry. Overnight camping on the salt itself is not permitted, and driving on the surface when it is wet damages the salt layer and can strand vehicles in mud beneath. The historic Wendover Airfield on the Utah side preserves World War II bomber training facilities, including hangars associated with the Enola Gay crew. On the Nevada side, West Wendover offers casino dining and entertainment. Farther afield, the Sun Tunnels land-art installation and Blue Lake are within day-trip range, and Great Basin National Park lies to the southwest for travelers continuing on.

Summer is the primary visitor season. Daytime highs commonly exceed 90°F in July and August, and the salt surface is typically dry and firm. This is also when the major land-speed racing events run at the flats. Bonneville Speed Week is an annual land speed racing event held at the Bonneville Salt Flats, held annually since 1949, and takes place in early August. Additional permitted events, including Motorcycle Speed Trials and World Finals, follow later in August and September. During permitted racing and private events, the salt flats are temporarily closed to general access beyond designated areas, though visitors may travel up to 100 feet onto the salt from the portal sign without paying the event's entrance fee. Spring is the wettest period and can leave standing water on the salt. Driving onto the flats is discouraged when the surface is wet. Fall brings cooler, still-dry conditions and is a good shoulder season for RVers avoiding summer heat. Winter is cold, occasionally snowy, and windy, but in-town RV parks remain accessible from I-80 year-round.

Expect an open, treeless landscape with strong sun, wide temperature swings between day and night, and frequent wind. Shade at RV sites is limited, so awnings and window covers are useful. Fuel up in Wendover before heading east or west on I-80, since the interstate stretches toward Salt Lake City and toward Elko and Reno are long and sparsely served. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and weakens quickly on dispersed BLM sites. Groceries, propane, and basic supplies are available in West Wendover, with fuller RV repair about an hour west in Elko. The salt is corrosive to vehicles: rinse undercarriages after driving on the flats. Families should plan for early-morning or late-afternoon visits to the salt flats in summer to avoid midday heat and glare, and pack hats, sunglasses, and plenty of water.
